I think that the fact that's it's DBZ is why it'll sell.

I think that you're looking too far into it. This isn't for a specific type of fan like the DBox was. This is the very first time the original DBZ series will have ever been on Blu-ray. Before that, there were the outrageously priced singles on VHS and DVD that only one person I ever knew in person actually collected. Everyone else just watched it on TV until the Orange Bricks came out. So, for everyone that isn't some super hardcore DaizEX-level geek, this'll only be the second time DBZ was ever worth having.

It is for the dub fans more since it will have the dub music.

Fans of the dub score will enjoy it, but the actual score itself isn't selling copies, it's the show that is.

And the Japanese music, and the Japanese version of the show. If it was "for the dub fans" it wouldn't have the other stuff on it.

This isn't a "for [this type of fan]" style release. It's just DBZ on Blu-ray. DBZ (the series) has never been on Blu-ray before. This release looks like it's trying to get it right for everyone the first time around.

Would adding the dub + Kikuchi track as an option kill the bitrate on Blu-Ray? I'd like to think it's big enough to not be an issue, but it depends on the quality of sound used, I guess. It will be very funny to have a True HD Dub track and a Mono Japanese track. Is there any sort of modification Funimation can make that doesn't involve permanently altering the Japanese source? I guess that would require them to make their own copy.

Just like Dragon Ball since Chapter #4.

Adding 3 soundtracks doesn't really kill bitrate unlike DVD. After all, Blu-rays are 25 single layered and 50 GB dual layered. Many companies such as Warner Bros managed to add tons of audio tracks and subtitles on their Blu-rays and still have incredible picture quality.

I don't know if they were made specifically for the fans of the Japanese but they certainly had them in mind. I mean, it defaults to Japanese with subtitles, no FUNi score, and the Dragon Books don't use FUNi naming conventions and ideas.

"Well, then... [this this and that] so there!"

Yes, they are. That's why the dub was an afterthought. That's why the dub with the US Broadcast music wasn't on it. It was for a specific type of fan. They were making money on a significant (though not entirely large) group of people who were spending the cash skipping the middleman (FUNimation) and importing the DBox and R2 singles. If it weren't for that release, we probably would've seen DBZ on Blu-ray a lot sooner.

The uncut DVD singles from Ginyu Assault onward, the Ultimate Uncut DVDs, and the Season Sets had every type of fan in mind using every type of audio that they had available to them at the time. While the advertisements may have been aimed at the dub-watching majority, the content within was specifically put there to please every type of fan. Also, while a purist population of fans loudly rejected the Season Sets, that response really wasn't predicted by FUNimation. They meant that release to be for everyone.

Now that they've gotten the, "This one's for you, purist nerds," release out of the way they can move back into doing what they've been doing ever since they took all fans into consideration with the DVD releases: releasing DBZ on Blu-ray in a way that hits the widest audience possible by including audio tracks for dub and sub fans and (presumably) doing a better job remastering the footage as to not alienate the purists and people with the common sense to know that not everyone in DBZ should be Joker Permawhite.

Just because the Dragon Box has a specific group of fans in mind doesn't mean that every other DBZ release has to be categorized as "for fan X" or "for fan Y." FUNimation's smart enough to know that, aside from some limited collector's edition of the series, they want to hit as wide of an audience as possible in as few tries as possible to make the most money possible.

I think they wanted to keep their dragon boxes original as possible which is why the dub music was excluded from them.

I would venture a guess that FUNi wouldn't have backed away from that score nearly as much as they did had it not been for the legal drama and bad blood. But that's just a feeling I get and a matter for another topic.

Regardless of whatever audio options pop up, it's good that FUNi is cultivating their own masters (now presumably making a proper high def remaster) to last them as long as necessary. People who wanted the Japanese track could have gotten almost any DVD release. But the Dragon Box was the very first consistent one that didn't look like ass. That's what I valued more about it than anything. Dub or sub, it's a moot point when the video itself is nigh unwatchable.

So you aren't a fan of the video on the old FUNi singles then? I generally think they look serviceable, if a little saturated. In fact, those combined with a hypothetical complete Ultimate Uncut run would have been the best release of the series for me. But it appears the upcoming Blu-rays will be even better than that, can't wait...

The singles aren't a consistent release given the cancelation of the UUE. And even if they were, 90+ DVD singles is just too expensive/unwieldy for me.

The movie singles, on the other hand, are great in my mind. They generally look good and they are nifty for being the only 4:3 release. I haven't gotten the steelbook releases but on the off chance we do get the Dragon Box movies that'll be perfect since that will cover the 16:9 version.

Yeah, the episode singles were quite decent looking. it was mainly the movie singles that looked like utter shit most of the time.

I don't know much about re-mastering stuff, but is there a reason why they remaster some scenes in black and white or is this just for the trailer...?

Why not just take Kai, make it completely uncensored by the standards of the original manga, remaster it, and you have the epitome of Dragon Ball.
