- They were intended to be seen that way.
- There are a lot of scenes, like Gohan's Masenko in DBZ movie 3, that were clearly drawn with widescreen in mind.
- They're movies, they should feel cinematic, 4:3 does not feel cinematic.
- I hate to use this argument, but, they fill widescreen TVs and monitors.
Dragon Ball Movies In Widescreen
Dragon Ball Movies In Widescreen
Is anybody else really mad that we didn't get the Dragon Ball movies in widescreen? I just find it weird that they released the recent 4 pack in 4:3. I mean, I can kind of understand it in 1998 since most TVs then were 4:3, but a lot of people have widescreen TVs these days. I wish we could get them in widescreen since:
Re: Dragon Ball Movies In Widescreen
Both 4:3 and 16:9 versions included on one disc would be perfect to me because I think they are meant to be seen in the both way.
Are there really a lot of them? I know only two of them, where Shenlong grants the wish and Gohan shoots Masenko in DBZ movie 3. I've never seen other examples. If there are only two, they can be just mistakes. The original Japanese VHS release of DBZ movie 3 had the 4:3 footage, anyway. I don't know about the other earlier movies though.Pokewhiz7 wrote:There are a lot of scenes, like Gohan's Masenko in DBZ movie 3, that were clearly drawn with widescreen in mind.

Not really, still kind of annoying, but I guess I could deal with them. There was one other, but I can't remember it.kei17 wrote:Are there really a lot of them? So the movies are intended to be cropped.

Yup, always have been.Gotham22 wrote:So the movies are intended to be cropped.

Am I the only one who gets the feeling that FUNimation is... well, scared of cropping anything related to Dragon Ball, after the orange bricks backlash? Like, the double features are cropped, but they probably wouldn't be if they hadn't been put out alongside the bricks.

One should keep in mind that, yes they're not cropped, but most TVs have the option of 'fill' where the picture will be zoomed in to widescreen with the top and bottom out of the picture. I could be in the mood to watch in widescreen, or I might want the complete image. Either way, I have the option.
Re: Dragon Ball Movies In Widescreen
Thats dumb. So you're supposed to lose picture for the films but the series.

And make the image all fun mouse mirror, no thanks!bulmafan97 wrote:One should keep in mind that, yes they're not cropped, but most TVs have the option of 'fill' where the picture will be zoomed in to widescreen with the top and bottom out of the picture. Re: Dragon Ball Movies In Widescreen
If each movie is on a single disc, why not just have both widescreen resolution and non-widescreen?
Imo there are benefits to both and should coexist.
I don't really understand why there shouldn't be options for either, even though the movies are meant to be in widescreen. If you have a version with more to show on the top and bottom, why not release it too? I don't see the problem with this.
The problem is that Funimation seems to be hellbent on exclusively doing this for the Dragonball movies. Judging by the format of this, I could see this being in a similar case too.

Re: Dragon Ball Movies In Widescreen
What kills me is that the Bardock/Trunks double-feature is in widescreen, as well, when it should be in 4:3. =\
Re: Dragon Ball Movies In Widescreen
Yeah, and the original single disks are missing the special eyecatches. >.< Anyway, I wouldn't mind having both on the same disk, but I wouldn't watch it that way. But since they don't, if I wanted to watch it for 4:3 for whatever reason, I can just get the FUNimation singles for that.

Yeah this pisses me off to no end. The bumpers look utterly terrible.Mountain wrote:What kills me is that the Bardock/Trunks double-feature is in widescreen, as well, when it should be in 4:3. =\
