What time slot did DBZ originally air in Japan?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

You should give it points for trying though. The 90s series was really a series of adaptions of the comics, and was also arguably the first real cartoon-with-mature-bits that really differentiated those shows from their 80s bretheren.

But there's no way they'd make another cartoon exactly the same a mere 7 years later. And in many ways, Evolution goes back to one of the original idea for the X-Men: a school for young teenagers learning how to control their powers.

And I have to love the sheer cheek of making Gambit and Collossus into "bad guys".

Ohno don't get me wrong, I loved the old series' campyness! And I see and also am in agreement with your points about the new show. But I still don't like it. It's just the way I feel. My own little hang-up.

Fair enough. You're allowed any opinion you want. As long as you aren't going to say something crazy like "the original He-Man" series was obviously much better written and more intelligent than the new one. Or "Teamo Supremo" is better than the Powerpuff Girls.

No I don't like Teamo Supremo, I've actually never even watched it, but I will say that I like the old He-Man for that fun campyness again and really cheap-looking animation. Except that I like the new He-Man series too. :D

I've never heard of a southern goth. But I don't really hear of any southern people. Except maybe my grandma. I swear I'm putting her in a home.

Liam, I'm curious to know what you think of Samurai Jack?

I wasn't overly impressed at first, mainly because it suffered from "Gilligan's Island/Voyager Sydrome". Ie, they set up the show in such a way that there can never be any resolution to the set-up without it causing the show to end.

But it's grown on me. There are some really cool episodes. Jack vs Aku was great, with the "I knew that you knew that I knew that you knew that I would cheat" bit.

Ya I thought that too. I was suprised it ever got made, because it's so obviously a homage to Kurosawa's films and also the Lone Wolf and Cub films. I figured the same thing would happen with it that happened with Fox's broadcast of Escaflowne. It would just go over kids' heads. But I've heard some kids say they like it, not many, but some. It's definitely a very creative and imaginative show.

I'm guessing it's all about "marketable demographics". The Powerpuff Girls sell shitloads of merchandise, hence the show running longer than any other Cartoon Network show ever had. Samurai Jack is likely to have a lot of older fans, hence they can sell better advertising blocks. Maybe.

I do know that Jackie Chan has stated that he wants to play Jack in a movie adaption.

That would be neat, but I don't know if I could see him in the role. Jackie's so comedic and cheerful.

That's the timeslot YTV chose for it from the Trunks saga to the end. It was really quite cool.

Ya it was the same with YTV for Escaflowne. That's why it did better over here and YTV was able to to run the whole series through about three times because it had a chance to gain a more mature audience. You poor guys in the States have it on around 4 or 4:30 in the afternoon on Cartoon Network right?

Not to mention YTV actually got all the way through Escaflowne. FOX completely axed the show after angry letter bombs from otaku. Cripes, people, if you don't like what you see on TV, just purchase the DVDs. They're cheaper than DBZ DVDs and you get more episodes on them.

EDIT: Geez, I'm breaking the rules a lot, tonight.

Actually Fox canceled the show because they were idiots who tried to broadcast a show aimed at teens to young kids who would never find it interesting. Escaflowne got pitiful ratings and was canceled. Yes hard-core otaku did complain, but trust me, otaku are a small group and it's rare that big networks like Fox give a care what they say. If that were the case, you'd be getting uncut dual language DVDs of Yugi-Oh! and Shaman King.

Escaflowne, for the moment atleast, is not cheaper than DBZ, and you get roughly the same ammount of episodes per DVD.

In march though the individual DVDs go down to $15 RRP US each, so other places should have them fairly cheap
