Re: Ooishi Doing V-Jump Manga: Episode of Bardock
What a terrible ending from what I have read about it. I expected more out of the final chapter and was really looking forward to it.
I still look forward to reading this though just to see how it ends. I am disappointed though now.

Re: Ooishi Doing V-Jump Manga: Episode of Bardock
What's with all the "waste" and "terrible" comments? Really? What did you expect? It's building up to this, everyone knew it was going to end like this from the start. Bardock transforms, defeats Chilled, legend is born. I mean... I wanted a bit more information, even if it was in the form of narration only, but fuck it. This is good, it's better than not having anything and it most definitely is better than having a freaking new transformation with zero back-story behind it, god knows we've got enough of those.
Re: Ooishi Doing V-Jump Manga: Episode of Bardock
Just because it's better than nothing doesn't mean I don't have to judge it for what it is. It's interesting but not all that great. My opinion, etc, etc.DNA wrote:What's with all the "waste" and "terrible" comments? Really? What did you expect? It's building up to this, everyone knew it was going to end like this from the start. I agree. I didn't have high expectations for the plot, because it seemed pretty predictable from the start. But I was hoping it would play out a little better, and that the story would at least resolve all of the mysteries it introduced (especially the time travel).NeoKING wrote:Just because it's better than nothing doesn't mean I don't have to judge it for what it is. I do love the idea of getting official stories that try to fit in with existing continuity and explain these gimmicky new transformations. But I'd love it even more if the stories were better.

Well, maybe Toei will adapt it into a special? They could easily fill it out, then.

That was ALMOST as anti-climactic as the Smallville finale... and that's saying something.

Okay no explanation on the Plantians? Fine, I´ll make my own : Plantians lived happily after after until Freeza nuked them and sold their planet to the Tuffles (who are also in alliance with him;providing armor technology and stuff). After the Tuffles are dead for a while Freeza decides to check out where the hell they are, and find that the Saiyans killed them all. Thats pretty impressive. So he decides to make a deal with them and make them kill planets for him, until he is fed up with them and kills them off yadayada...
Besides that I think this special and its ending wasnt so bad,I fact I really liked many parts of it (Chilled is a funny guy
), expect that explanation as to how Bardock was transported into the past was kinda... unsatisfying.

Re: Ooishi Doing V-Jump Manga: Episode of Bardock
Nah, I think that Tsufurians simply lived in the cities, Plantians lived in the villages, and later when they came, the Saiyans lived in the caves. Maybe Saiyans killed the Plantians or keeped them as slaves when they killed all the Tsufurians and took over Planet Plant/Vegeta.kaialone wrote:Okay no explanation on the Plantians? James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.
Re: Ooishi Doing V-Jump Manga: Episode of Bardock
I believe the Tsufurians kept them as slaves, I believe they are secretly evil. Or maybe not so secret since they built a machine based on grudge energy and a kind of parasitic life form that feeds on negative emotions.DBZGTKOSDH wrote:Nah, I think that Tsufurians simply lived in the cities, Plantians lived in the villages, and later when they came, the Saiyans lived in the caves. Re: Ooishi Doing V-Jump Manga: Episode of Bardock
No, as I said before, this story really cemented my statement, that Naho Ooishi isn't a good storyteller, even worse than lot of fan-fiction writers. It was really dull and somewhat it don't have that adventurous feel like the classic series had and those fights don't have any dynamic and attractiveness I'm used too.
Only thing she's good at is adapting Toriyama's style and that also isn't anything great.
I have one guy with popular story around Euro-US fanbase and that is Salagir (or Gogeta Jr.?)
in mind, who is able to adapt Toriyama's style with little difference and Multiverse have quite good and interesting storytelling.
I understand how JSAT was adaptation of existing material, so it didn't look like that.
But drawing in this Bardock special is completely off and Bardock looks weird on 75% of shots.
What I admire were the new designs for Chilled's henchmen, who got killed off in two frames after their appearance.
But I don't like Chilled himself. I got ''chills'' when I saw his sillouete in the first episode. Then it turned out pretty rudiculous.
Those aliens on Plant..... Really??? Even TOEI can make a far far far better character design.
I understood Gure, which looked like that probably because of comedic purposes and I liked here design.
But this doesn't look like Dragon Ball to me and I start to have thinking that every race in universe is plain except people, Saiyans and Freeza's mutant henchmen.
TOEI excluding writing were pretty good on character design, and I seriously think, if the've done this as filler in the series (hypotethycally), the aliens won't look as slime fused with s**t.
I see this old series going more and more off the world each time they trying to make some new expansion.
They are simply killing it with stuff like this.

Another one of my problems with this special is Chilled's design. Am I the only one that feels his design is really non-threatening.

Re: Ooishi Doing V-Jump Manga: Episode of Bardock
Yeah, she should have stayed in the shadows. If he's Freeza's ancestor, then *pop*.
He looks like Kuriza that was comic character which also kills the whole tone of threat and any need
to read the story.
Now I got it, He's Kuriza ancestor and this manga isn't relevant to Dragon Ball but to Neko Majin.
Yeeeah, Bardock didn't changed the time, but he's in the alternate world where Neko Majin exists.
Sure, this proves that Ooishi sucks even at comedy. ''Huh, we are the space policy'' ha ha ha

His design looks ridiculous; it looks like Freeza in a weird pajamas...DragonBoxZTheMovies wrote:Another one of my problems with this special is Chilled's design. Am I the only one that feels his design is really non-threatening.

I doubt she came up with the story on her own, it was probably Shueisha and maybe some from Toriyama.MCDaveG wrote:No, as I said before, this story really cemented my statement, that Naho Ooishi isn't a good storyteller, even worse than lot of fan-fiction writers. Story by committee is one of the worst things about American comics and it seems that Dragonball has been afflicted by this as well, not that the original series wouldn't have had editors and executives breathing down Toriyama's neck.
Dragonball not drawn by Toriyama just shouldn't happen unless it's something in a different style like Astro Boy/Pluto, they should have learnt from Dragonball GT that it's a bad idea.
Re: Ooishi Doing V-Jump Manga: Episode of Bardock
This is actually the only way I can imagine DB returning as manga ( not that I'm holding my breath for it ) and have a safe chance at success again. It's clear that AT has no intention of returning to the life of a full time manga author, but what he could do is have someone else draw the story for him while he comes up with the ideas.

Agree 100%. I was waiting for some more info, about the story and all the mysteries...I agree. I didn't have high expectations for the plot, because it seemed pretty predictable from the start. So, now Bardack is the legendary Super Saiyan? The 1st one?? It's not clear. I don't understand...so the Legend of the Super Saiyan is based on him?
So, what's next guys? This is the last chapter, right? So the Episode of Bardack is over, isn't it?
And they are looking to do something similar with the new transformations, like SSj3 Vegeta?

Re: Ooishi Doing V-Jump Manga: Episode of Bardock
I guess I should note that there's a blurb on the side of the final page that says "The strongest warrior: Super Saiyan!! That legend would be passed down through Freeza's clan...!!" And the bottom of the page says "owari" ("the end"), instead of "tsuzuku" ("to be continued") like the first two chapters did.

Re: Ooishi Doing V-Jump Manga: Episode of Bardock
While story by committee is, yes, usually an indicator of lower quality than a single author, I don't think that was the primary problem behind Bardock and Dragon Ball SD.monster wrote:Story by committee is one of the worst things about American comics and it seems that Dragonball has been afflicted by this as well, not that the original series wouldn't have had editors and executives breathing down Toriyama's neck.

If story by committee can give us something at least as interesting as GT, I'm fine with it. But these were not only story by committee, but story for promotion. They're just little tools used to sell Heroes and V-Jump respectively, and I have no doubt Ooishi was given some incredibly lackluster, restrictive guidelines to reflect that. Basically, no one had their soul put into writing, or consequently drawing, these mini-series. I'm betting there were at least a few Toei scenario writers who were pretty gung-ho about GT.
