It'd be helpful if someone could translate this for me.

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
Question. Maybe my memory is shot but I remember someone telling me that the infamous quote from Goku about Dabura being stronger is actually correctly translated as tougher, and that it's the context , or the way it is spoken, or some reason I can't remember used as stronger instead of tougher?

No, the word used is just tsuyosa, "strength", the same thing used most of the time when talking about a character's strength.p123 wrote:Question. Ok, wondered were I heard that from. I guess Viz used tougher, since it seems to make more sense in the context of the quote. But thank you...

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
Which quote are you thinking of, anyway? The one after the fight with Pui Pui where Goku first says Dabra is about as strong as Cell, or the one from Gohan's fight with Dabra where Goku says he's a lot stronger than he thought? It's the same basic thing in either case: tsuyosa in the first and in the second tsuee (Goku's hick pronunciation of tsuyoi, the adjective form of tsuyosa). But "tougher than I thought" probably sounds more natural in English than "stronger than I thought", and I doubt Viz were thinking anyone would draw a meaningful distinction between someone being strong or being tough.p123 wrote:Ok, wondered were I heard that from. Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
I'm talking about the , Oh, he uses magic, he's a lot tougher than I thought. Then Vegeta says, Not so tough that we can't beat him.
Yea, it does seem to flow much better, but also with the context of magic, as in Hey, he uses magic? That surprised me, he's even tougher than I thought he would be. When said with stronger, it almost seems as if they shouldn't be used together since magic has nothing to do with making one a stronger opponent, but making an opponent tougher because of magic, fits better. Oy, that sounded all jumbled, but I think you know what I mean.
How far in the the translations for the anime accurate you feel? I'm guessing even in Early DB they are not up to your standards since you took the time to post translations even from the get go.
But you feel the movie translations are accurate. That's odd to me, different translators for the anime and movies? Or just didn't have time to do the movies?

"Stronger" and "tougher" are basically the same thing, so you shouldn't be splitting hairs by looking too deep into it.

I wouldn't if it wasn't such a huge part in one of the biggest power debates in all of DB. The Buu Saga is riddled with headaches and the more accurate the translation, the less headache.
PD, are you a translator, or are you just saying tougher/stronger is the same thing, because detailed subjects like this annoy you?

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
Well, it's only because of power debates that people nitpick on specific lines and over-analyze the context and whether it means this or that, etc. I'm not a translator, but I think that "stronger" and "tougher" are practically the same thing, yet when you say that "tougher" somehow portrays a somewhat different meaning to "stronger", it does kind of annoy me a bit, because it's just the kind of splitting hairs thing that I see all the time in power debates. Viz's translation of this line is perfectly accurate, but there are a selective few that would prefer to know the original solely because they think they might find out some new meaning that they can use to influence their and others' battle power lists, even if it's just the same and can be interpreted any number of ways.p123 wrote:I wouldn't if it wasn't such a huge part in one of the biggest power debates in all of DB. I feel like I'm going off on a tangent here, and I'm not personally targeting you or anything, but it's just something I wanted to say.

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
"He uses magic? He's stronger than I thought," may sound odd and like the first line has nothing to do with the second in English, but may make perfect sense in Japanese. I'm just guessing, but there are a lot of cases where even though a word has a direct English meaning, its actual usage is slightly different. That's why completely literal translations of Japanese sometimes seem a bit odd.

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
Yea I def don't understand the complexity of how Japanese plays out but I know on English generally you refer to what you just said.
So he uses magic , is a note to self , oh I didn't know he had that skill as well, to he's tougher than I thought , plays off of Gokus first bit , which was bringing up the new evaluation of Dabura, something he wasn't aware of, and it's cause and effect.
Goku mentioning magic, then bringing up strength, which has no relation to magic, is a bit odd.
It's kind of like he's off track, if he wanted to bring up strength, he should have brought up hey, I didn't expect Dabura to be so strong, and he uses magic? Hes tougher than I thought.
I get it PD, a bunch of nerds tryin to get translations so they can sway people to their magical power level list and be the coolest kid on the block. Although I am a power level guy, and that may annoy you, it's just a fun hobby for me. I'm not trying to twist nothing and just trying to understand what's going on.
The Buu Saga is just so all over the place and massive new ideas it's just a what happened to what we thought was the norm?
I'm rambling , sorry about that...

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
No, it's all right. I understand what you mean, how "tougher than I thought" can imply a different meaning than "stronger than I thought", since the former in certain circumstances may not only refer to physical strength. But yeah, I guess it was me just venting off my annoyance at the nitpicking of translations of certain lines that I see as being fine. Not that there's anything particularly wrong with that. If people want to analyze translations like that for their battle power lists and debates, that's fine.

Could some translate these for me? I'm mainly interested in Kaio's 10x gravity and Freeza's planet busting statements. Thank you.

Hey, could someone translate the original manga version of the scene at the 22nd TB when Kuririn argues with Chaozu about their baldness? And then could you provide the Viz translation, so I could compare them, please?

If somebody knows the words to The Young Warriors: Goten and Trunks' Theme (Shin Oya), then that would be just great.

First bubble:
"Ah! I've heard that from Kaio-sama before...."
Second bubble:
"Kaioshin..... You're Kaioshin-sama?"
Not much too it at all.
