It's also the same shitty master Funi has. There's going to be more grain than the Dragon Box.

Oh really? I guess they're only allowed to use the Dragon Box masters for the Dragon Box, and that is it. Oh well. It looks nice enough.

Nah... upscale the Dragon Box pictures posted for yourself. The grain is roughly the same amount, just sharper since it's an HD transfer.

I'm sure we'll ahve a few people do overlays and half-half comparisons soon enough (I would do it but I'm heading out the door). As long as the bitrate is high, I'll be happy.

Although, it would suck out-loud if it didn't have the original Japanese titlecards. Bluray has the space available to do this kind of stuff.

Yeah, I did the same thing. I also downscaled the Blu-ray cap to 480 and the grain was roughly the same.

I was a little disappointed that all they mentioned were the video aspects. There was absolutely nothing on the audio end; will we get a lossless Japanese mono track...? We'll have to wait and see. Something else that disappointed me was that FUNimation seems to have little to no interest in alternate angles (for any release), so purists shouldn't expect original Japanese title cards. It would seem that, although these Blu-ray sets appear to be anything but rushed, there are still a few reasons to own the Dragon Boxes. There is still no mention on which recaps, eye-catches, or episode previews will be included, if any.
Every FUNimation release ever since mid-way through the singles has always kept the recaps and eyecatches, at least. Those will definitely be there. The previews, on the other hand, who knows...

You're suspicious that the orange brick shots look too *good* when the product they're trying to hype is the Blu-ray? That... doesn't really make much sense.

Yeah, I did the same and its about the same grain.

Anyway, I'm not so sure if the masters are that shitty. It looks pretty good so far with the restoration process and all. The Dragon Box so far doesn't really look better. We will have to wait and see how it plays out.

I don't know why they'd want to artificially make the bricks look better, because it really wouldn't make sense. (To keep selling those DVDs? Or make it seem like their previous attempts at remastering weren't that bad?) But they just look odd to me, so I really want to see third party screenshots. That's all.

I'm surprised, these actually don't look that bad. If only they had have used DBOX masters.

Well, I took a screen shot from the orange brick myself. My screen shot is on the top and FUNimation's screen shot is on the bottom...

Funi's/ANN's is ever so slightly sharper, but it's likely just a difference in screencapping methods.

I guess I wasn't completely crazy, but the difference in clarity is pretty small. It could also be a slightly different frame that looks identical, and they just happened to pick the best one.

Oh well. I didn't mean to derail the thread with my crazy suspicions; I mostly just wanted to reaffirm the idea that we should do our own lossless screenshots. I have both R1 and R2 Dragon Box versions of those episodes, so I'll probably try to do some of those later, if no one beats me to it.

Well, it's part of the image. Remove it and the image becomes blurry and in high motion scenes often removes entire lines of animation. Look no further than the orange bricks.

Repair the grain it's easy.
I have seen fans releases which have clean the grain:

Dragon Box:

Fan release:

It's not so difficult do that, when even a guy who it's amateur on this can do it.

I only am giving an example of the easy it is, is jut an image, no more.
I'm don't talking about bootleg, I just say that if a kid of 15 years old can do it, a proffesional can do it. In this forum there is screens changed by photoshop, well that screen is changed by whatever thing, but that whatever thing can be used by a proffesional better, just that.

1) The Dragon Box cap is clearly from a shitty source
2) Look at the background in the bootleg pic. The detail has been smeared to shit and looks like water colors
3) YOU CAN'T TALK ABOUT BOOTLEGS. Especially when you're trying to make them look superior to official releases.

And will you do that free of charge ('cuz, ya' know, you don't need health benefits or even a living wage at all) for somewhere around 9,218,880 individual frames (~24 fps * 60 seconds per minute * ~22 minutes per episode * 291 episodes of DBZ)...?

I do so hope you'll also remove every bit of detail in the frame, just like in the above example! :D
