No, demand for the items set price - not costs. But, let's take a look at that anyways. The question then becomes how much extra does it cost to insert one more Bluray disc? Apparently for large orders (like 25,000) each bluray disc is something like $1.00 to a $1.50 per disc. I don't see that as being cost prohibitive to the package.
That isn't quite the cost. That is a rough estimate for a 25 gig disk. It doesn't take into account other variables based on adding a disk.

That doesn't include things like different packaging, shipping weight changes, the fact that for more niche content, many stores actually request a 'maximum' price.

And demand isn't the only thing that sets price, sometimes it is material costs. Shout was able to pick up the license for the Japanese Transformers series cheaply, and because the masters weren't in the best shape, they were able to put more episodes to a disk. The set ended up being 4 disks for Headmasters, the MSRP was 30 dollars. It's a show with little enough demand that I don't believe Shout was even able to get Wal-Mart to stock it in stores. Despite the lack of interest, they were able to keep their cost low enough to sell it quite cheaply.

Raising the prices to make more work and only please... at best... what.... 5% of the audience? (and that'd be for a non DBZ show... I can't even imagine the percentage for DBZ...)

It just occurred to me, has anybody compared the screenshots to the Ultimate Uncut editions yet? The dark sky is very reminiscent of those - and, for that matter, so is the level of grain. I wonder if it will look like that sans the edge enhancement...
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Huh? Really? I always thought the Dragon Box colors looked right. I thought that's how it was meant to be seen. I mean take UUE for example. They were very dark and oversaturated. The green hue has been pushed to blue. If they left the colors alone, they would have looked like Dragon Box.

Don't get me wrong. The Blu-ray looks pretty good to me, way better than Orange Bricks, but it was a bit skeptical to say the Dragon Box colors were a bit off.

From the looks of it, the only thing that I am actually liking about this release is the cheap price point and the video quality. I really don't know if this is enough to triple dip though..

Any scene where the Earth's sky is green should make it really obvious even to the casual viewer. The moments of pink or yellow hues can also be noticed if you pay attention. From what I recall hearing, the colors in the Singles are closer to the original broadcast colors than the DBoxes are.

That being said, I don't particularly mind faded colors, as I've grown up watching Golden-Age cartoons which color-decayed to nearly being all pink or shades of brown, and compared to that the Dragon Box looks great.

As for the notes about grain: "Grain = Image" aside, I'm hoping this doesn't have a glaring increase in grain amount compared to the DBox... kinda funny to say that considering the alternative may be Orange-Brick DVNR, though, so I'll have to be cautious of what I wish for.

From the shots I'm seeing, the Blu-rays are't so spectacular that I feel the need to buy and watch these Blu-rays over the DBoxes.

This show was made in the 1980s, so seeing it in HD isn't particularly awe-inspiring. Sure, some of the lines look crisper, but the grain is far more apparent and worse looking. It's a trade-off that I don't really like.

The grain is a part of the image, it's an old show, there should be grain there. But one thing I hated about the original singles was how high the contrast was turned up and how much more apparent that made the grain. This is the same thing, the HD transfer makes the grain look horrible.

Kai is how I'm going to watch this series in HD from now on. Between Kai and the DBoxes, I'm set.

And I note that it's not just the Gokū-vs-Vegeta fight that has a green sky in the DBox either. Several other scenes have a green tint in the sky (though not to that extreme). Back in #p-o, we call it the "Toei green sky" problem, since it affects several older shows by Toei such as Sailor Moon. Which also don't have a green sky in other foreign releases like the American DVDs (as bad as they were) and the Portuguese TV airing (with lol VHS masters).

That's what I'm going to do, but only if these have English title cards and Faulcner's music. The reasons I want those two things is because I already have the Dragonboxes, which lack both those things. Seeing as how these two releases are pretty similar in picture quality (other than Level 1.1 being in hd, and some DBox coloring issues) there would be no reason for me to triple dip (DBoxes, Kai then Level 1.1) on these if they had all the same crap as the Dragonboxes. I want choices and variety, although that doesn't mean that I will be watching the series with Faulcner's score, (I'm not a huge fan of it) it would just be a nice thing to have. Sort of like an extra. As for the English title cards, well.......... alternate angles anyone?

Kai is not Dragon Ball Z. I think it's completely unfair to count that as triple-dipping.

Well fine, then double dipping. Although I myself count Kai as DBZ, since that is essentially what it is. However, that is not the point my post was trying to make.

Excluding Kai, this will be the fifth dip for me (VHS -> DVD singles -> Orange Bricks -> Dragon Boxes -> BDs), and I highly doubt the cycle will end here. Haha. I've given up on claiming that I won't purchase a particular release, because, in the end, of course I will... =\

Like I said, If these sets include English title cards and American music, there would be no point in you keeping those orange brick sets. I would honestly sell them, but wait until the official specs are announced (although once that happens, I assume people will be selling their orange bricks like crazy), or you could just keep them for collective purposes.

Since I own the Dragon Boxes, there's already no point in me keeping the orange bricks. I only bought the first two, anyways, and I keep them buried in the closet beneath the VHS collection. =P

I'm working on getting the Z Dragon Boxes. If these do have the dub music that I'll replace my Z season sets with these Blu-rays.

You could always use the discs as coasters.

................................... I really don't know what to say. I thought the dragonboxes were going to be the best release we were going to get and that blue rays wouldn't offer much besides the picture by a little bit and being on blue ray.... If the have the American ost I will be buying these b/c I bought season 1 and 2 of the orange brick and never continued because of the dragonboxes, but planned on buying them later for the American soundtrack. Now that these came out if they do have that option I will have to buy them...but I have 2 copies of each dragonbox b/c I thought they would be the ultimate release... Now I don't know when the season sets of these do come out if i should buy 2 of these or not(just in case they wear down after being watched over 30 years). This is very frustrating maybe ill give away all 7 dragonboxes to someone as an x-mas gift if i plan on buying 2 of the blue rays.... Why did they have to do this!!!

I wouldn't do that. The Dragonboxes are a collectible (possibly limited) release. I would hold on to them just to have them, but also have the blu-rays for viewing purposes.

Exactly! And we don't know if these will include the Next Episode Previews, which Japanese Mono Mix or if the original title cards will be included. In any case, if this is what the Blu-ray release will look like, what are the chances of seeing Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball GT released in this manner! I know, I'm getting a little greedy!
