They were clearly shown watching from a crystal ball.
Oh crap... silly me! The truth is I saw the tail-end of the Kid Boo fight in a YouTube clip, and never actually watched the whole thing in the anime (I did read it in the manga though). All I remember is seeing Freeza's face there for a second. I guess if I'd seen the entire episode I would've seen the crystal ball. Sorry about that!

Grandpa Gohan still seemed pretty old. He didn't exactly die of old age, though...
If TPP passes in your country it will be illegal for you to watch an imported DVD. Click here to learn more!

Oh yeah, not to mention FREEZA HAS HIS BODY, so the whole thing is just a big burrito of stupid.

Even so, why the fuck would they have a crystal ball? The only crystal balls we ever see are Baba and old Kaioshin. And that's because Baba's a fortuneteller, and the old Kaioshin...well, he's the highest god in existence.

Back then, though, I don't think Toriyama had ironed out the rules of the afterlife yet. He hadn't even shown the afterlife yet, and even when he did, he likely still hadn't made up the rules about "really good guys keeping their bodies" , since there was that thing with Enma taking down Raditz to show strong he was, and God not saying to Goku, "Yeah, but he was just a puffy little cloud, so it's no big deal."

Babidi also had one and he was in Hell.

Oh yeah, maybe it was Bobbodi's crystal ball. As there's nothing that suggests that Freeza or Cell can materialize objects out of thin air.

Cell has Piccolo's cells, so he can at least materialize clothes or other objects.

Yeah, perhaps it was that. Either one works.
