DBZ Movie 1 "Best of Both Worlds" edit.
I really love the first DBZ movie; I think it's probably the one I've watched the most next to the fusion film. Back when I was a kid, I watched it subbed, dubbed... repeatedly. I'm amazed I still have the VHS tape in its original clamshell case!
The Pioneer dub was really great, but at the time I was extremely disappointed that Goku was the new guy instead of Ian Corlett. No sleight against Peter Kelamis -- he's great in Ed, Edd, and Eddy -- but his Goku never sounded natural to me. Just recently, I checked out the double feature of Dead Zone to listen to the Funimation dub -- something I had never done before -- and all it did was make me wish for the full Kai cast. Still, parts of it were really good and you can tell it's much more recent than the later movies. Sean Schemmel's Goku is really great in this film, as is Sonny Strait's Kuririn... Gohan not so much. I also really like Piccolo, but even though I really liked a lot of it, it just wasn't the same as when I was a kid. The villains especially have that too gruff/not natural enough thing going for them that they've grown out of in Kai.
So, since I doubt we'll ever have this film redone by the Kai cast, I instead wondered if it was feasible to combine the best performances of the two into one fan edit and still have the movie make sense. So I took this challenge and re-edited the movie so that Goku, Kuririn, and Roshi from the Funimation version interact with Piccolo, Gohan, Bulma, Garlic Jr. etc. from the Pioneer version.
I've always wondered what it would be like for Schemmel's Goku to interact with McNeil's Piccolo... and I bet some other people do too, so here it is.

So what I have done is uploaded an mp3 of my project. Like I said, this is JUST AN MP3 of the audio, not the entire movie. You will have to sync it up to your legitimate copy yourself. It should work with the Dragon Box or the Double Features... though you may have to resync it just slightly depending. The audio's not perfect, but it's pretty seamless save for one or two instances you probably won't notice.
I've seen people upload audio from full episodes before, so hopefully this is within the limits of the forum. Feel free to moderhate me if not.
Analysis wise, I learned a lot about how both of these movies were mixed in the process of doing this. In the Pioneer version, the foley and music are a lot louder compared to the dialogue, though you can hear hiss and hum throughout. In the Funimation version, it's a lot cleaner, but the sound effects and music are a bit tinny, a lot more cutting to the ear. The music is also a lot less loud than the dialogue. Even still, except for one or two cases I've managed to make the transitions fairly seamless.
The dialogue for both movies is pretty much the same, though as much as I love the Geneon performance I think some of the rewritten dialogue in the Funimation one is technically better in terms of tone and clarity. The banter between Goku and Piccolo when they strip their weights off makes more sense, for instance. One weird thing I noticed is when they redid the script, during their intro, they gave Kuririn the line Piccolo had in the original dub... but I sort of like how it seems like Piccolo is one-upping Kuririn's entrance with the same line in this version.

Re: DBZ Movie 1 "Best of Both Worlds" edit.
Maybe it's because I've listened to one too many old radio shows (Or, ironically, an attempt a Dragonball radio serial that actually has four episodes), but I found this pretty darn interesting. It really heightens how Ocean's voices tended to be higher pitched, while Funi's were rough; particularly comparing Garlic and his henchmen. Also, which BGM track were you using? I can't remember the last time I heard the song that plays during Gohan's acid trip.

Re: DBZ Movie 1 "Best of Both Worlds" edit.
I ended up using the original score so that the music would match. The song during Gohan's acid trip was left in the original Geneon dub, so it stayed here.
On the voices, I had to actually pump-up the Funimation voices a bit so they weren't so quiet compared to the Ocean ones. The Funimation mix is overall cleaner, so there was a bunch times I had to add a bit of background noise to match.

Re: DBZ Movie 1 "Best of Both Worlds" edit.
The only thing that feels awkward so far (about 10 mins in) is that the sound effects keep changing -- the Ocean dub has extra american sound effects overlayed on top of the Japanese ones and the FUNi in-house dub does not. It was rather noticeable in the scene with Bulma, Gokū and Muten-Rōshi looking at the radar and the radar sound effects kept changing.

Re: DBZ Movie 1 "Best of Both Worlds" edit.
The sound effect is the same as far as I can tell, it's just that on the Funimation version they did some processing to the audio to clean it up that makes the music and effects sound more sharp but also a bit more cutting to the ear.
EDIT: I hear the bleep you mean. I might see if I can edit that out...
Unfortunately due to the quick back and forth with Goku, Bulma, and Roshi I had to make quick cuts. In most other instances I was able to smooth this over by doing long fades of the sound effects or switching them during loud bangs.
Now, the Hanna Barbera effects that they did add... I got rid of most of those. Some revolve around Gohan and I couldn't get rid of them. There are also sometimes where Gohan's grunts will be the Funimation version since they overlap Goku talking.
There's also a bunch of added sound effects in the ending... like the Kintoun and the wind during the ending part.

Re: DBZ Movie 1 "Best of Both Worlds" edit.
It's not just audio processing. The sound effects in the Ocean dub have extra sounds overlayed on top of the existing ones. This happens with several sound effects including the Kinto'un flying, Ki blasts, etc.

Re: DBZ Movie 1 "Best of Both Worlds" edit.
Yeah... I noticed that during the ending, where there's a bunch of new sound effects for flying wooshes and the kintoun. I found the bleep you're talking about too, and you're right on second listen that it's obviously a bit different. I'm guessing they added a bunch, especially where they made things have stereo directionality.Puto wrote:It's not just audio processing. If you notice anything else really glaring, let me know. To fix the ending I need to get some soundeffects of Kintoun to cover up the lack of sound, though.
By the way, when I did this, I dropped in the TV size stereo Cha-La-Head-Cha-La from the BGM CD, and I realized that the movie version is actually a bit slower. Zenkai Power did not seem to have this issue though.
EDIT: 6:30 in. I meant to make note of this earlier because I found it hilarious. It seems that Pioneer added a choo-choo-train sound effect to Goku's running.

Re: DBZ Movie 1 "Best of Both Worlds" edit.
Either fun removed the lyrics (Which would be typical of them), or I've never heard Dead Zone with the original score. Probably the latter...
I'm a bit torn on the henchmen voices, myself. Ocean got their wackiness, but Funi's tendency towards deeper voices got the demonic flair going. Funi's Sancho is probably the only one I know I prefer.
Also, Kalamis was in Ed Edd n'- *Wikipedia*- well no wonder Rolf was epic.

FUNimation did in fact remove the lyrics on the dub with j-bgm track.BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:Either fun removed the lyrics (Which would be typical of them), or I've never heard Dead Zone with the original score. Probably the latter...

Wow, this is pretty darn cool. Haven't listened to the whole thing, but I've skipped around a bit and I'm pretty impressed.

That's what I disliked about FUNi's Dead Zone. I loved the Pioneer version of all the voice work I was shocked, and felt ear raped when I heard the redub.BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:Maybe it's because I've listened to one too many old radio shows (Or, ironically, an attempt a Dragonball radio serial that actually has four episodes), but I found this pretty darn interesting. I much prefer Kelamis over Schemmel but I respect both. Interesting idea, and I had seen something similar where Kirby Morrow was replaced with Schemmel (never liked Morrow's Goku) and it sounded awesome with Drummond/Schemmel working together! That is something that I would love to see more often!

I would like to hear Tree of Might and World's Strongest done like this as well (although Tree of Might might be difficult to match up with script-wise.)

I've always found the Funimation dub weird because when viewed by itself, it works, when compared to something else, its vocal liberties with the series- ignoring scenes Funimation actually did better- are jarring.Attitudefan wrote:That's what I disliked about FUNi's Dead Zone. Very cool. I was trying to do the same thing with The World's Strongest a while back, mainly using the Ocean dub, but with FUNi Goku, Roshi & Oolong...until I got lazy.
Can't wait to check this out!

The FUNi redub was censored and the acting did not feel up to par compared to Uncut Pioneer and the original Japanese version.BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:I've always found the Funimation dub weird because when viewed by itself, it works, when compared to something else, its vocal liberties with the series- ignoring scenes Funimation actually did better- are jarring.Attitudefan wrote:That's what I disliked about FUNi's Dead Zone. Re: DBZ Movie 1 "Best of Both Worlds" edit.
I would argue that both dubs had excellent acting, but that Pioneer's was slightly better only because of a slightly more accurate script. And yes, I did use the word "slightly." With a few exceptions, their script for this movie really isn't that far off.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."
