Re: Bootleg dragonbox?
You'll usually see Chinese and English subtitles listed as features on DVDs like these, which are always red flags.
Re: Bootleg dragonbox?
Thats where I saw it too. It was ending and I didnt know if i was passing up on something rare until I found them cheaper at other sites. Wanted to know what they were though so thanks a bunch! Still waiting for the DragonBall DragonBox :/Funny I was just on eBay and saw this.
Re: Bootleg dragonbox?
I have one of these sets. The encoding quality and piss poor subs make it certainly not worth the price, let alone the fact that it's a fake.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Re: Bootleg dragonbox?
Which version is it a rip of, bkev? Did they just rip off Funi's, or did they do the actual Dragon Box?

One of them appeared on eBay the other day, a lot of people were bidding for it. I kind of felt sorry for them, they must have thought it was the real Dragon Box.

153 episodes on 6 discs?!

Re: Bootleg dragonbox?
It's certainly not from the FUNimation masters but I can't confirm if they're dragonbox. If they are, they've been filtered to remove most of the grain.

I had the same expression. I remember a few years ago there was a similar styled bootleg which was on 20 plus discs. They were Dragon Box sourced, but they had the episode previews cut, sometimes halfway through the preview!Castor Troy wrote:153 episodes on 6 discs?!

Definitely looks like a bootleg, but I have to say I am digging the cover art, moreso than any other bootleg I've ever seen.
Do you follow the most comprehensive and entertaining Dragon Ball analysis series on YouTube? If you do, you're smart and awesome and fairly attractive. If not, see what all the fuss is about without even having to leave Kanzenshuu:

Re: Bootleg dragonbox?
That's basically 25.5 or 26 episodes a disc.jjgp1112 wrote:Holy fuck, I can just imagine how awful that looks.Castor Troy wrote:153 episodes on 6 discs?!

The low bitrate is probably the 'grain removal' part, since it's all probably smudged to heck from the macroblocking.Castor Troy wrote:That's basically 25.5 or 26 episodes a disc.
I think this one has it beat though, it's 5 dvds for everything:

30 episodes per disk.
I have to say, I'm pretty impressed what the the bootleggers did for the 'DBZ' logos here:

I'm impressed they expended that much effort, since it's a pain in the butt to do special finishes and raised lettering and stuff. That requires a lot of masks and the illustrator files to be specially prepared. Just for that effect, it's 2 or 3 artboards right there.

Re: Bootleg dragonbox?
These bootlegs have some very nice covers.
It must look terrible though with so many episodes per disc.

Re: Bootleg dragonbox?
Well the set I had was an older version of this I suppose; it had 26 episodes to 3, as is often common in the Hong Kong bootlegs. I have the first 26 episodes, which kind of sucks because I get cut off right in the middle of the Tenkaichi Budokai... well anyway it doesn't matter because it's a bootleg and I was a scummy middle schooler who got it in Chinatown.

Re: Bootleg dragonbox?
It's not that hard, you will only get the innards of the logo with magic wand, color it with 100% of one of the CMYK color and make into separate layer for a parcial paint or metallic foil. But what surprised me is their investment into the metallic parcialAshura wrote:I have to say, I'm pretty impressed what the the bootleggers did for the 'DBZ' logos here:

When making discs is way cheaper then print, so the Box is probably on par with the price of 6 discs when we are talking about the factory price

Re: Bootleg dragonbox?
The harder part is setting up the identical artboards in illustrator and getting all the alignments and measurements correct on the separations. I guess it's easier in indesign or photoshop, which they may have done. (Also, your printer might not be a bastard and doesn't require separate artboards for spot coating, etc. The ones I've worked with do, usually...)MCDaveG wrote:It's not that hard, you will only get the innards of the logo with magic wand, color it with 100% of one of the CMYK color and make into separate layer for a parcial paint or metallic foil.
BTW, you just can't 'magic wand' it if you want it to look decent, you have to make sure the edges are at least somewhat clean and anti-aliased. This is a bootleg we're talking about, so they probably DID magic wand it, but...

Re: Bootleg dragonbox?
I'm usually magicwanding clear spaces with one colour and no texture and then do the cleaning, or you can set up edges and lot of stuff to get the best result. Our ''rule'' is to make things fast and in HQ. When I'm describing something, it comes from how I do it and what I know my colleagues, we are using different paths to reach the same finish, so my graphic messages are not the ultimate paths to reach it and when talking about printing, I have high end machines, like ofset in mindAshura wrote:The harder part is setting up the identical artboards in illustrator and getting all the alignments and measurements correct on the separations. Has anyone ever posted clips or screencaps of these bootleg sets?
