That's not ironic, that's just coincidental.

I know the feeling. This is how I pictured Anna from Shaman King before seeing the anime in either language and it was weird to me to hear the actual voices:

As for DB, it depends on the moment, especially since I haven't watched DB or Z in a long time. I finished reading the whole manga again recently and will say I heard Brannan, Martin, and Cook for Babidi and Buu, but it's been so long since I heard Dabura that I couldn't picture his voice, and just heard whatever in my head. Something similar happened last week when I bought Darkwing Duck: the Duck Knight Returns. Aside from the first two episodes which I watched when I bought volume 1, I have not watched Darkwing Duck in years, so I could still hear Jim Cummings and Terry McGovern's Darkwing and Launchpad voices, (grant the latter's kind of a cheat due to it not being so long since I last saw Ducktales), I couldn't picture Goslyn, Megavolt, or the other old characters' voices. Even Negaduck who was also voiced by Jim Cummings.

I generally hear a pretty fair mixture of various casts when I read the manga. For instance, when Goku's a kid, in my head, it's Masako Nozawa speaking English. When he's an adult, he becomes Masako X from Team Four Star. Freeza usually sounds like Ryusei Nakao, but sometimes when I pick up the manga, it's Little Kuriboh or Chris Aryes instead. I can't think of any characters I imagine with their original FUNimation dub voices off the top of my head, but a fair number of characters sound completely different from any voice actor I've heard since I read the manga before getting into the anime. Piccolo, for instance, sounds very different in my mind. However, I find it difficult to not imagine some characters with the voice actors I'm used to hearing.

The topic made me think, for the Americans, (as I have no idea if what I'm about to mention airs outside of Japan, France and Mexico), do animated adaptations of US comics influence how you read US comics? For example, do you hear Kevin Conroy or anyone else who played Batman when you read Batman?

I once tried to read Volume 1 with the Kai dub voices in my head but in the end I couldn't help but hear the old dub voices with Kai acting.

I read my Kanzenban, so I hear Nozawa and crew.

I'm not sure how I'd imagine it when reading the series in English were I to ever do so.

One Piece scanlations have been coming out quicker than raws recently for some reason, so I've taken to reading those and since One Piece has a really good dub that I enjoy, when I read that series in English I hear the dub cast... but when I read my Tankobon, it's Tanaka and crew.

Recently, I've been enjoying the Hell out of the Kai dub. It's actually good, and I've seen/read this series enough before in Japanese that seeing an English version that is good makes watching it that way feel like a fresh experience, so I'm enjoying watching it dubbed more for the time being.

So, I dunno what I'd do if put in the same seat with DB.

Odd question but do any of you ever imagine the English dub actors speaking Japanese?

I keep hearing Vegeta as Sabat but I want him to sound like Drummond when I read so I end up rereading his lines.
I usually hear a mix between my favourite actors in both English dubs. It's really weird but it sounds awesome as it plays out in my head. Now only if it was that way in English!
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Glad I read through the thread before replying. I was gonna say the same thing myself, as it kinda bothers me how often people misuse the word "irony".

As for me, I hear the Japanese cast. I've been watching the series exclusively in Japanese for the past 2 years or so (except for Kai), so they're the first voices I think of when I think of the characters.

I try to hear Zoe Wanamaker in my head for Goku as a child and adult, definitely can't get Brian Drummond out of my head as Vegeta.

I tried imagining Piccolo Daimao as Kelsey Grammer too.

I just imagine the Funimation dub's voices in my head.

No, what you want to do is imagine the Crane Master as Kelsey Grammer and Taopaipai as David Hyde Pierce.

For kid Gohan, kid Goku, and Piccolo Jr., I imagine the ocean voices.
Everybody else, I imagine FUNimation's voices from original Z.
When I read Dragon Ball in Japanese, I imagine their Japanese voices.

As for other manga, I mostly imagine their Japanese voices if I've seen the anime, similar thing for American Comics too.
- Been a Dragon Ball fan ever since 1995 (at the time, I was 7 years old).
- I prefer Saffron Henderson's Kid Gohan and Kid Goku over Stephanie Nadolny's.
- I still hope for a redub of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z with FUNimation's current cast.
- I prefer to watch Dragon Ball Z with the Faulconer Score, however I do not mind the original Japanese score.

I hear voices in my head even when I'm not reading anything

But usually when reading manga or book, I have my own set of voices :D

When I read kid Goku or Gohan, I hear Nozawa speaking English. Not always Goten, though. I hear Kara Edwards' version for the little tyke almost as if not more often than Nozawa. For adult Goku, I hear some weird 3-part hybrid of Nozawa, Schemmel, and MasakoX. For Vegeta, I hear Ryo Horikawa speaking English, and likewise Toshio Furukawa in English for Piccolo. For Freeza, all I hear nowadays is Chris Ayres. Same with Dameon Clarke for Perfect Cell.

That's all the major ones I can think of. Most others are either neutral or some weird self-crafted voice.

Also, certain characters, just depending on the day, it seems, will end up sounding differently. Like, for example, recently Bulma, when I'm reading the manga or fanfics, will end up sounding like either 1) Tiffany Vollmer, 2) Monica Rial 3) Chi-Chi for some weird reason or 4) Some strange combination of the 3. I try to steer it towards Vollmer but I've been struggling. With Kid Goku or Gohan, I have no trouble imagining Stephany Nadolny because I've formed this weird habit of imagining her voice for any book I read where one of the characters is a meek, shy, kid. Though if I just finished watching One Piece or something, it'll be some odd mix of Nadolny and Clinkenbeard for whatever reason.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I've had some weird moments too jjgp where I hear a voice that is rather different. For exaample last week I was reading One Piece vol. 44 after watching FMA Brotherhood on AS, and there were a few times I was hearing Usopp with Edward Elric's voice when he was yelling. I had to stop and wonder why I was hearing that voice.
