Where does this artwork come from?

Post by InThere » Wed Sep 28, 2011 9:25 pm

Image

So I'm at a friends house who has this poster up on his wall. I remember seeing the image from somewhere a long time ago but I'm not exactly sure where. Perhaps the mall or something. I asked my friend why Goku and everyone in the picture are wearing different clothing and I was told that it was promotional artwork for a canceled season of the anime where different characters were given powers of animals (Goku was given Tiger powers and wardrobe for example). Since I beleived nothing he said I tried to look up and learn more about the image but to no avail.

So...
Is this image "official"?
Was there a canceled season where characters were given animal powers?

Edit: Also I hope this is in the right section.

Uh...erm...no, just no. lol The outfits they are wearing are based upon the clothing worn by characters in Journey to the West, which was the inspiration for Dragon Ball when it first began (Goku fighting Pilaf for the orbs).

That story about a different season or what-so-ever is gibberish.

The clothing is from Journey to the West tale which Dragon Ball is based on, there is also some manga title pages which characters are dressed like that. Check Kanzentai Influential Non-Story Manga Aspects guide.

It's official in that it was officially released art, but the stuff about animal powers and a cancelled season is completely made up. It's actually parodying the Chinese classic Saiyuki, which is the story Dragon Ball was originally inspired by; Goku is dressed like the Son Goku from that. Dragon Ball just happens to have a lot of art like this that doesn't actually have anything to do with the story.

Edit: How did I miss you guys' replies...?

That poster is confusing. It looks like Dragonball mixed in with Z. It leans more towards DB though. As far as Goku being a tiger or whatever, I suggest you not take any kind of advice from this "friend" of yours.

The characters are from the arrival of Raditz part of the story, or Garlic Jr. movie.

I just don't get it... Why are such blatantly false rumors about Dragon Ball still spreading to this day? Not just this, but now crap like "Hoshi" and still AF. I remember just a couple of years ago in High School there were kids talking to me about how "they know that Dragon Ball AF is real because their friend told them". Then I explained to them how it's complete BS, but I can't remember their response.

I figured these things would have died out years ago. I thought things like the rumors to Pokemon died out years ago (unless they're also still going strong, but I wouldn't know), so why can't Dragon Ball's rumors just stop, especially now that its fans are older?

I can't tell exactly, but that character on the left looks like General Blue from DB.

What character on the left? The only character I see on the left side is Kuririn...

The art style does seem to be identical to that of the one who drew the artworks for related goods sold during the original run, such as pencil case, lunchbox, etc. I guess they used one of such artworks.

Wow I never seen that picture before and I think I could safely say I've seen most of the official artwork out there.

Is there any chance that there is better version of that poster somewhere?

Worth noting that it has the Ocean logo with the gradient DBZ text...
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Not to mention the user, supersaiyan5's repeated claims about "secret DBGT movies" and a new DB series called "Z Ultimate" on FUNi's old message board.

Oh man, I remember that! Didn't he try posting that here as well, or was that someone just asking if his "info" was legit?

I believe that was him. Same name, albeit with "5" spelled out as "five".

Weird... My poster has the regular DBZ logo (red and yellow). Though, mine's one of those "wall scroll" things.

Hm, I couldn't manage to track one down online, but I did find that rightstuf happens to have it in stock. I also happened to find that it's been posted in another thread here once before, and Mike posted this image in a reply, which might interest people:

Yup, I've know this image for years and it's one of my favorites. That's why I'm so interested in the Toei Version, because it seems to be related to this one :) (although the first time I saw it, it was in LQ and I had no idea those were suppoes to be old traditional chinese clothes. I was wondering why the hell Goku was dressed up as a washerwoman, with coif and broom and everything....)
