Russian DBZ dub is being aired

Post by sangofe » Thu Sep 29, 2011 3:44 pm

DBZ is finally getting dubbed, and broadcasted on TV in Russia, and unlike the Romanian dub, it is fully a real dub.
So far they've aired 8 episodes.

I've seen episode 1, and here's what I've gotta say about it:
- Head Cha La's used -- un dubbed, and the video quality is pretty poor.
- Zenkai's power in - also with hideous video quality.
- No previews.
- There are no title cards; but you can hear a part of the title card sound play...
- The video is far from remastered; there are marks everywhere in the video.
- Raditz speaks of Goku as "Kakkarot."
- Chichi sounds too young.
- Goku's voice is not a super man voice; it's a rather high pitched male voice.
- Raditz is completely without emotions.
- Gohan sounds like he's actually voiced by a kid who does a good voice sounding like a cry-baby.

It's weird that some countries are still only getting dubs of Dragon Ball/Z in 2011, especially with Kai being the new hotness and all.
Ah well, good on you Russia, I hope you enjoy your dub! :)

DBZ is gonna get all episodes dubbed in Denmark I heard, but I don't have any real source apart word of mouth from Danish fans, so I haven't posted anything about it.

Also, it's better to dub Z than Kai seeing how incomplete Kai is.

!!!
Yes. Yes.
Fantastic.
I cannot wait to hear this for myself. (Even if it seems by your impression the voice acting isn't the greatest.)

Are the Russian voices just placed over the Japanese voices? I've seen this done a few times (The Simpsons being the main one), I don't know how people watched dubs like that.

Any chance that we can find a clip or two on YouTube?

I apologize waaaaay in advance if I'm displaying cultural ignorance, but is it this dub? I know it says the Serbian dub, but I was under the impression that both Serbia and Russia spoke Russian. Mind you, I'm not prepared to defend that at all and admit ignorance in the matter.

Serbian and Russian are two different languages.

Russian is East Slavic. Serbian is South Slavic.
I'm sure there's people in Serbia that do speak Russian, though.

(The series in Serbia (and Croatia) is called Zmajeva Kugla Z. You can find a lot of clips on youtube, if you're curious.)

Ugh... Why do all countries get poor treatment on DBZ, especially the dub? Can't they take dubbing seriously? The only dubs that were taken seriously were Mexican and USA, on Z and Kai respectively, and I expect Funimation to take dubbing DB series (be it a new series or remade) seriously from now on. I can't say I'm happy for the Russian dub.

I think it'll be ... not great. But I'll try and reserve judgement until I actually hear it.
But I'm sorta excited to hear it in Russian - as a curiosity kind of thing.
(As it's my culture.)

The truth of the matter is that dubbing is not a huge business. Anywhere. And when you have a limited budget, studios tend to hire "limited budget" talent. A lot of this has to do with the fact that dubs were originally regarded as just a translation device. Something that had to be done in order for different audiences to watch it. Over time, people gradually awoke to the idea that dubs don't have to be just a translation device, but they can be an artistic device as well. Not just a means of translating the story, but also an entirely new set of performances that could be regarded as entertaining in their own right. So every country's standards for dubbing has gradually improved over time.

...Some faster than others.

From what sangofe mentioned, this is probably a proper dub. When I heard voicover, it's only a one person as narator (Poland) or man and woman narating the roles respectively for gender (Russia).

They also do similar thing with Power Rangers Season 3-Space, it was hideous, one man and one woman voiceover multiple characters.

The problem with dub in Poland, is fact, that in almost every dubbed anime, you hear the same voice, and often unchanged, i facepalmed, when i heared, that guy who dubbed Meowth from Pokemon, use same tone of voice with character from Yu-Gi-Oh! :?

I will see what I can do later, but I do not promess anything. And this is a real dub, for whoever asked.

Edit: whoever is interested in Dragonball dubs from all over the planet can PM me, and I'll have a little "present" for you (I try to collect DBZ dubs from all over the world).

Coola , don't make assumptions based on several miserable low cost dubs made during painfully birth of commercial TV channels. Anime doesn't end on children battle shows.

I watched episode one and it seems that they're using the same footage as the Hebrew dub.

You've linked to the same video twice.
Here's the second video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTahKEAMr5Q

I like Gohan's voice, but Goku ... hmm. I think it'll need to grow on me.
