When will you be finished with your collection

Post by Beji » Thu Oct 13, 2011 1:19 am

I always wondered this but because of my complete US Dragon box collection I have I feel like my collection is slowly coming to what I would call "a close". Most of the items I have always wanted to buy I now have and the last things I am going to get is a few figures. I am sure they may release some new things that I will want to buy (the Dragon boxes for the Movies and Dragon Ball maybe even GT possibly, blue rays) but besides that I feel like there aren't that many items that I need to search for or find. What do most of you on here that do collect Dragon Ball related items call a "complete collection"? When will you be finished with your collection and you ever will be? What would the best kind of overall collection be to you?

Side note  I smile every time I go into my room now as weird as that sounds because when I first watched Dragon Ball Z first and then Dragon Ball I wanted all of these things but I couldn't afford them and finally I could and have bought through the years what I wanted for as cheap as possible so I was pleasing the fan, the collector, and the child in me at the same time. Just wondering if people had the same issue as me and how everyone got their collections started if there was a defining point.

My "complete collection" would just be the original anime trilogy. The only things I have left to purchase are Dragon Boxes six and seven, which I'll probably do over the next two months. I'll make them Christmas gifts at the very latest.

Oh, and I suppose I'm missing Z movies three and four as well, but whatever. And I haven't purchased a single episode of Kai. I might look at getting some of the Blu-Ray season sets way down the line.

I don't think it will ever really end for me. I'm not too big on figures, but I have been picking up some DBZ toys lately for whatever reason. I have begun picking up the Daizenshuu and the manga, but that won't last forever.

When Akira Toriyama draws me a picture of Goku and Cell fighting in Heaven with halos and wings, autographed and framed in in safety glass with a water/fire proof frame.

I love the Dragonball universe so much, I doubt my collection will ever stop :D
I remember saying I will never buy any of the Dragon boxes.
(because I own all the season sets of Z & GT)But I just bought another box set a little while ago lol
Same thing with kai, I bought all 4 original releases  I will not be buying the rest due to the score change.
I remember saying screw the remastered movies. Bought em
even though I have all the original dvd movies + vhs copies. And just recently I said no go for the Dragonball Z level 1.1 blu-ray.
But I know I will be buying them. And to beat it all, I don't even own a blu-ray player

I always find little Dragon Ball knick knacks that I like and I'll never have EVERYTHING, so it'll never be complete. But I'll be happy when I have the rest of my Super Battle Collection and the rest of the VIZ Bigs. And then I'd also like to get the original tankobon, I already have a handful. And then the Kanzenban in Japanese and French.

I don't really buy the merchandising stuff or the manga so I can't say anything about that. For video releases however, for Z, I don't intend on buying anymore releases after I buy the last Dragon Box and for DB and GT, I've got the singles & collections and don't plan on buying anymore till FUNimation ever release the Dragon Boxes.

I still need to get the manga. I was thinking about vizbigs. I would also like to have the Kanzenban, but those would be extremely impractical considering I can't read Japanese. I would love all the R2 singles + R2 Dragon Boxes, but I'll never have them since I have no use for them. Just a few singles. If Funi gets thos Dboxes, then I'd definitely be buying those. I still need to finish my Kai blu-rays. After that, it will probably be just some odds and ends every now and then.

For the VIZ manga, I bought Dragon Ball through Z by saving up my allowance and then when I got a job with the left over money I had after paying my bills. I know the box sets are more edited than the ones I bought as they were coming out, so if you could get the ones I did, the early, early printings, you're set. Otherwise the nudity and little swear words they have are edited in the box sets, just like they are in the VIZ Big editions. That's why I'm thinking about getting the Perfect Éditions, I've heard the French translations are superior to VIZ's and theirs is unedited. All I've gotta do is re-enroll in French classes and brush up.

I’m not really that big of a collector of official stuff, to be honest. As people are probably aware, I collect doujinshi predominantly.

I will never have every single Dragonball doujinshi released and I doubt people will stop drawing new comics of this series any time soon.
So … my collection will never be “complete”.
I’m okay with that! I like my current collection very much and it’s always a blast to buy new comics and discover new artists.

... maybe once I hit a thousand doujinshi I will stop.

...

Nah.

So far, I just need to get the last Dragon Box and the final volumes for Kai, and then I'll be done. After 2 years of collecting, it's pretty awesome that I managed to most of the Dragon Ball DVDs released in North America.

I feel that my Dragon Ball collection won't ever be complete  It's not that I want EVERYTHING thats been released but theres items such as Daizenshuu volumes, Toriyama Collection, certain V-Jump's ect.. that I won't be able to get my hands on. So when I own all three series plus movies/specials I will be happy to call that "My Collection".
Also theres the fact that when I do obtain my definition of a "Complete Dragon Ball Collection" it wont last forever & I intend on watching Dragon Ball/Z/GT when I'm 60+ :P so I'm sure Ill be having to buy the next few dozen formats of the series they release in later life.

I have a general fandom rule regarding Japanime properties; buy the source material, buy an occasional video game (If they're good), don't buy the excess merch. Pretty much my approach to Dragonball. As such, I have no desire to complete any sort of collection. Illustration, at this point I might be too late for Dragon Box 2, oh well, Namek isn't one of my prefer story arcs anyway.

(Now, I don't own any of the manga, but how much space to I want to dedicate to one story?)

I'll say that my "official" collection will be complete only when domestic Dragon Boxes are produced for everything, and the JSAT Special is licensed, anime-wise. Would I love to see the original Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans on a disc just so I'd have it? Sure, but I'm more about having things with a good story. :P
Having all of Dragon Ball Z in DBox format, knowing I'll never have to buy another completely Z TV series-related product again, feels like saying goodbye to an old friend (though I guess an unending stream of releases helps).

Overall, what's left of my complete collection would be:
Dragon Ball in DBox format
Dragon Ball GT in DBox format
All the movies/TV specials in DBox format (all domestic, hopefully)
Heya! The Return of Son Goku and Friends released domestically
And, even though I know it's a stretch, uncut Kanzenban (with a new, better translation) and Daizenshuu from Viz

Otherwise, I'd be fine. The VizBigs aren't awful, so if Kanzenban never come, it's not the end of the world, and the only thing I'd probably buy after all of that would be an occasional figure.

Dragon Box - Awaiting (possible) announcement
Dragon Box Z - In the process of (finally) getting them. Box 1 in my hands, Box 2 on it's way, 3 - 7 as soon as i can get them
Dragon Box GT - Awaiting (possible) announcement
"Dorrrrrragon Box! Zaaaaa Moooooooooooovies!" - Same, although i do have the Movies and Tv Specials in semi-Dragon Box format from Spain's release, I can wait longer for those

Jump Anime Tour Special, Plan to Erradicate the Saiyans and Plan to Erradicate the Super Saiyans (<- Without, you know, fudged "dubtitles" and being on a game disc and whatnot)

Complete Portuguese tankobon edition - We're on 13 right now, and have mine proudly exposed
Complete Kanzenban edition in a language I fully understand - WTF, Viz?!
The other Daizenshuu releases - W. T. F. Viz...
Neko Majin - V...v...VIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIZ!!!! Come out, you candy-ass faggots!!!!

All the games, and platforms in which they play. Speaking of that, a Hyper Dimension HD remake (a HD-HD remake, lolz)

Oh, the Chouzenshuu and Hit Song Collection 6. A release of the GT music would be gold.

Cipher's goal is pretty much my goal at this point. The main merchandise I really want is all 508 episodes of the original anime trilogy and all of the movies. I'm pretty close at this point. All I have left is the last two blue bricks and the GT Complete Series set (I currently own Season 1, but I'm planning on selling that and getting the Complete Series instead.) I'm pretty close on the movies as well, since all I'm missing is DB Movie 1 and Z Movie 4.

Now that I think about it, I would love to get at least one of the official Japanese soundtrack releases sometime in the future as well. I appreciate the soundtrack too much for the series to not purchase at least one in the future.

I'm not sure it ever will be, but...I do have things I know I need to get.

I have all of the Dragon Ball Z Dragon Boxes from FUNimation. I'll need Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball GT, the movies, the specials, and all other animation. I'd also like to own all of Dragon Ball Kai, but with the music scandal having taking place, I'll never own it unedited. I'll also want to buy all of the original tankoubon, too.

I only want the manga.

I love books and comics. They're great and they don't require any sort of technology to be seen and read. You can read them anywhere, anytime. They will never become obsolete because a different technology has become available. As long as you are somewhat careful with them, they will last you way longer than any DVD, VHS or Bluray. And even with some damage due to prolonged use or just because they are old, most of the time they are still perfectly readable and even the art (in comics) is still in very good shape and immensely enjoyable.

I also like animation but it has the problems I mentioned.

As for specifically the DB anime, like almost all anime, its inferior to its original source, the manga, which becomes yet another problem.

So, that is why I only want the manga. Its the best way to experience the franchise and also the purest way so I don't bother with any other way of experiencing it.

I already have all the Vizbigs so I actually already have all the manga. However, the manga is also being published in Portuguese without censorship, which is why I'm also buying the Portuguese volumes. They are good and different enough (from the Vizbigs) for me to buy them and I also wanted to support this rare initiative in my country.

When the Portuguese Volumes finish their release, I will probably be done with my Dragon Ball purchases, except if something worthwhile is published by Viz or something (like more Daizenshuus).
