Faulconer Productions Music Not in Seasons 1 & 2 (reasons?)
I always wonder why FUNimation never added the Faulconer score in the Saiyan/Namek arcs when they kept releasing Z over and over.

Re: The Faulconer Music
Well Faulconer didn't only compose the music, he was also the one to set it up with the animation. If he's not around anymore & things really did go down as badly as everyone keeps saying, they're not going to pay someone else to work with his score. That would mean paying 2 people, the one who composed it & the one who puts it together. Instead, why not pay one person to do both?
That's my assumption anyway. Then again, I'm one of those people who never saw the point in his score as the Japanese one is brilliant in my opinion.

I wonder why FUNimation doesn't use the Faulconer score from the beginning with the upcoming Blu-ray sets. The Johnson score is used for the first 67 episodes.

Cause they have no need to waste their time arranging his tracks for the episodes it wasn't used in?Gotham22 wrote:I wonder why FUNimation doesn't use the Faulconer score from the beginning with the upcoming Blu-ray sets. The Johnson score is used for the first 67 episodes.

Funimation is done with the Faulconer score I think. Especially after Bruce started a legal war over it. And the people who hired Faulconer Productions in the first place no longer work at Funimation.

It definitely would have been interesting how Faulconer's score would have worked for the first 67 episodes.

I liked Nathan Johnson's score better, anyway. (Though it's still a poor replacement for Kikuchi's.)

The Faulconer score is a relic of an era where rights to the original soundtrack weren't in place. But now that they are, where does that leave the Faulconer music...? It's a no-brainer from a business perspective, but I do get the plight dub fans face.
It's kind of a unique position, because generally people prefer the original material over made up dub material... but for some reason, some people seem to be quite attached to his music. I'm not criticizing that, you see. I like his soundtrack, albeit not as a DBZ one. There are some particularly memorable tracks that I thoroughly enjoy, such as the music as the episode is about to end ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2X4asYYWQw -- particular the part at 0:10 seconds with the "electronic buzzer" type of sound... it's very cool and ominous)... and a lot of the tracks used in the Buu era had a very dark and bleak sound to them which was actually somewhat fitting at certain points. So it must suck being in a situation where, for all intents and purposes, the music you grew up on with Toonami and are so accustomed to is essentially no more, and there really isn't any chance in hell it will ever return. That's really a bummer. There is the option to get the Orange bricks, but honestly those are basically a fraud. Half the image is cut out, and the picture was run through some cheapo, automated image-filtering software by some guy who produces porn videos.
The only thing I can say is, try to embrace the original Japanese OST--it ain't going anywhere.

Just a note that if you like the Buu "Faulconer" music, this is the real guy to praise: http://www.juliusdobos.com/Thanos wrote:The Faulconer score is a relic of an era where rights to the original soundtrack weren't in place. The episode ending music you pointed out.....woah....is real bona fide BRUCE FAULCONER.

The Faulconer score is being used again with the Blu-rays.
With the old singles and the Z season sets with the Johnson score in the first 67 episodes and of course the rest of the series with the Faulconer music.
With the Blu-rays why didn't FUNimation excluded the Johnson score and have the Faulconer score at the start of episode 1?

Re: Faulconer Productions Music Not in Seasons 1 & 2 (reason
We're talking about a company that isn't even into doing replacement scores anymore. The only real reasons it's being included on the Blu-rays is simply because "people want it" and "it already exists". They're not even putting any signifigant effort into its presentation. It's still in 2.0 stereo, as it's always been, rather than being remixed into surround sound. As far as FUNi is concerned, it's a relic of the old US anime industry that happens to hold nostalgic value, and is simply along for the ride, while the dub with the Japanese (a.k.a. "proper") score commands the driver's seat, so to speak.Gotham22 wrote:The Faulconer score is being used again with the Blu-rays.

Yup, contrary to what some Japanese score fans might think, you don't just slap the Faulconer score(or any score) on and have it work. There's a lot of editing that goes on and additional transition work. Some scenes are simply impossible to put old music over. That's usually where we would create new material.
