Any comparisons of Nozawa's portrayals?
It's probably well-known in the Dragon Ball fanbase that Masako Nozawa voices not only the male Sons (Son Goku, Gohan and Goten), but Bardock and Tullece as well in the original Japanese version of the DB anime. I don't want this thread to be a big argument over Nozawa's voices for them and whatnot, since we've already had threads like that and it would just be beating a dead horse. However, I will just mention one thing, since it's relevant to this thread: how some people don't like how Nozawa voices Bardock and Tullece, because looking like Goku doesn't mean they have to sound like him. However, the counter-argument is that Nozawa voices each of her characters differently, so someone like Bardock would have a different inflection to Goku.
Furthermore, Nozawa apparently has a different inflection for Goku's Super Saiyan 4 in Dragon Ball GT as well.
So I was wondering if anyone had made any comparisons of Nozawa's portrayals of characters: Goku, SSj4 Goku, Gohan, Goten, Goku Jr., Bardock and Tullece.

Don't forget SSJ4 Goku, I'm pretty sure she used a slightly different voice for him.

They are all slightly different, but I can't exactly say how. Her adult voices are definitely different from her child voices though. Something interesting I've noticed: she often forgot to do her child voice for Goku during GT. Sometimes she just did his adult voice, which is less cutesy.
Re: Any comparisons of Nozawa's portrayals?
I don't think that's true, most of the time. She certainly plays him differently, but that's because most of his dialogue is more "adult" than anything he would have said in the early part of the series.Zestanor wrote:They are all slightly different, but I can't exactly say how. The inflection may be slightly different, but it's never a carry-over of the adult voice from Z. It's just that she's not playing child Goku; she's playing adult Goku turned back into a child.

Except that Gokū's supposedly a child in an adult body normally as-is, so shrinking him down just makes him normal =P

Hmm... I think it might be a good idea to try to actually describe each of the different portrayals. Let ma make an attempt of sorts.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to think into it much besides "Kid Gohan is obviously meant to sound cute and harmless", "the way Goten pronounces 'Trunks-kun' almost makes him sound like a gaijin trying to speak Japanese for some reason", "Bardock basically sounds like Goku", and "Somehow Teen Gohan doesn't sound like Goku but I can't quite describe where it differs".

I think another good example is when Goku's showing Buu and Babidi all the Super Saiyan levels. In that scene we have a regular "adult Goku" voice most of the time, but when he's in Super Saiyan 3 her voices goes into a more deeper and relaxed tone...I wanna say even a more "mature" tone than what just "regular Goku" would have. (The delivery in that scene is just amazing)
I certainly agree with the previous posts, though. I liked how she got to explore that a little more with the Super Saiyan 4 state.

To me, all of Nozawa's kid voices sound alike: from Galaxy Express 999 to of course, Dragon Ball, she has a similar tone for all of her kid voices, which is not a bad thing since they fit perfectly with the characters.

I can say without a doubt that Goku, Gohan and Goten are all voiced similarly but with notable differences between each. Goten in particular always surprised me, because it would have been easy for Nozawa to simply return to her chibi Goku voice. But even those two aren't exactly the same-- instead she made yet another variation for Goten.

Nozawa's Goten kind of reminds me of her Guilmon voice somehow. Whereas her Gokū voice reminds me of Dukemon. And Gohan reminds me of Growmon. Go figure.

I'm not sure but, when Goku first becomes Super Saiyan against Freeza, I think his voice is a bit deeper and his speech a bit more adult.

I think when Goku yells and becomes a Super Saiyan the first time, her voice is a little deeper too.Anarchistguy wrote:I'm not sure but, when Goku first becomes Super Saiyan against Freeza, I think his voice is a bit deeper and his speech a bit more adult.

That's because a completely different voice actor did the scream. Captain Ginyu's VA, I believe.

Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I always thought they put it through a voice-effect filter.jjgp1112 wrote:That's because a completely different voice actor did the scream. Captain Ginyu's VA, I believe.

I'm pretty sure it's still her voice, just edited after it was recorded to get that different effect.

Re: Any comparisons of Nozawa's portrayals?
Yeah, someone pitched it up, and it sounded just like Nozawa. In fact, I just went and recorded the audio from the scene and pitched it up in Audacity, and it sounds like Nozawa. It also just sounds pitched down in general, and has slightly worse quality than the rest of the audio. Also in the credits listed at Kanzentai, only Nozawa is credited as Goku.Darkprince410 wrote:I'm pretty sure it's still her voice, just edited after it was recorded to get that different effect.
I have no idea where that rumor came from. It doesn't even sound like Ginyu's Japanese actor.

Re: Any comparisons of Nozawa's portrayals?
I think it's kind of fun when I hear Ms. Nozawa in other roles outside DB and can still hear Goku in the voice. :3
The most out-there place I've heard "Goku's" voice in has to be Merryweather (the blue fairy) in the Japanese dub of Disney's Sleeping Beauty. I read about it on ANN and had to look it up. XD
The voice I've heard that she's done that sounds the least like any of her other characters has to be Nozawa as Doraemon (Old, 70's Doraemon). It's very different.

That makes me think of the time I saw a clip from the Japanese dub of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, where she voiced Short Round. (Speaking of which, ANN lists Toshio Furukawa as dubbing for Terry Gilliam in Monty Python's Flying CircusChuquita wrote:The most out-there place I've heard "Goku's" voice in has to be Merryweather (the blue fairy) in the Japanese dub of Disney's Sleeping Beauty.
