Clarification help, please: Dragon Ball (and Z/GT) VHS tapes

Post by nesguy » Mon Oct 17, 2011 6:16 pm

In my search to get all of DB on VHS, I've been told that the Tournament Saga is unavailable in edited format because Funimation didn't start releasing edited tapes until the Red Ribbon Army saga. This was due to them trying to cater to the more hardcore crowd, but then decided it was worth offering edited tapes later on. However, they never went back and re-released the Tournament Saga on edited VHS.

Now, as I've been searching for the tapes, I haven't been able to locate edited tapes for Red Ribbon Army - Silver, or Red Ribbon Army - The Hunt is On. It seems like the edited tapes are only available for Assault on Muscle Tower, White's Last Stand, and West City Chase. Can anyone confirm this?
According to the old Z-store pages at Archive.org, this would seem to be true. However, they don't have listings for West City Chase, in either format, for the pages I've been able to search through so far. For now, I am going to assume there is an edited tape available.

Does the side-art for the 3 edited tape boxes make a complete picture?
Still searching for an answer on this one.

Also, did they ever release an art box for any of the Funimation DB tapes?
The consensus is no, so far, and I haven't discovered anything that contradicts that.

As for Z, I've been told they never finished the edited tapes for Cell Games. What was the last edited tape available for that?
According to the old Z-store pages, Cell Games: Surrender appears to be the last tape available in both edited and uncut format.

Also, was there ever an art box for the Great Saiyaman VHS set? I've been unable to locate one in all my searching.
Still need confirmation on this one, but it's looking likely there was never box art for it.

Lastly, my box sets for Frieza and Captain Ginyu actually say "Frieza Set Uncut" and "Captain Ginyu Uncut" on the UPCs. Did they release box sets that say "Frieza Set Edited" and "Captain Ginyu Edited" on their UPCs?
It's highly likely that there exists box sets with the "Edited" UPC. I have yet to see any photo evidence of this, but the old Z-store pages do list "Box Sets" for the edited sagas.

Were there any edited tapes for GT at all?
It's seems there are edited tapes, based on member input and the old Z-store pages. I'm still hoping to see some photos to verify for sure.

I also have the 3rd unedited Lost Episodes tape with misprinted side art (a repeat of the 2nd tape). Did they ever release a corrected version for that?
Still unknown.

Were there ever any art boxes for GT?
Consensus is that no, there are no art boxes available for GT VHS tapes. Still investigating on old Z-store pages to confirm, or awaiting contrary evidence from another member.

My last question is, were there any edited DVD's put out by Funimation for Z or GT (aside from the Pioneer/Saban sets)?
Yes! Thanks for the helping with the answer, TripleRach :)

I'd appreciate any help on these questions, as my VHS collection is rapidly coming to completion. Also, if anyone can take time to show a quick picture as reference on any of these things, that would help immensely (pics are worth a thousand words, after all :D ). Thank you!!

Well, I can't help you with regard to anything VHS-related. However, Daizex has a great DVD and Blu-Ray release guide (edited releases included) right here.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Being an avid Dragonball VHS fan, the Dragonball released tapes are spotty, they were all sorts of screwed up when releasing them so I can say much. The Cell Games were never finished in the edited version, they came back and finished the saga in Uncut but not until the Kid Buu saga was released. The "Freeza" saga and "Captain Ginyu" sagas did have edited box sets but they were just the empty display boxes that you could buy for $4 if I remember correctly. The did the same thing to the Garlic Jr and Trunks sagas then stopped. Yes, all the GT VHS tapes were in the edited format, never release in uncut and no box art was ever released either.

Not quite sure on VHS tapes, the only DBZ VHS I've EVER owned was the first Boo era tape because FUNi had some kind of deal with Burger King where you could get it from them before it aired on TV (I don't remember exactly what it was)

But for curiosity's sake, why are you trying to track down the Edited VHS tapes? Just for collection's sake?

The only edited DVDs released by FUNimation were for some of the movies. The first one was for Z Movie 4, and I think the last one was Z Movie 9...? The fourth DB movie (10th anniversary special) also had an edited DVD.

I'm not 100% certain about this part, but I believe there was also an edited DVD for the GT TV Special.

The other movies and TV specials were released before or after that era of simultaneous edited/uncut DVD releases.

...And I just had an idea. FUNimation's old store (Zstore.com) had a pretty detailed database of all their DVD and VHS releases, before the season set era. Maybe you could try looking up the site on Archive.org. I can't get it to load right now, so I don't know if it will work or not.

There was a listing for an edited version, but then it never came out.

Can you post some pics of your edited GT tapes please? All of mine are uncut, and say so right on the slip-cover. It'd be great to see some that don't have that Uncut label, so I can start to keep an eye out for them.

Great idea! From what I can tell, there should be edited boxed sets for both Ginyu and Frieza tapes. Still looking through dates to get other answers, but at least I can keep my eyes peeled a bit better now. It'd still be really helpful if a member here has any of these and can post an actual pic.

Also, I'm not picking these up solely as part of my collection, as I do intend to watch them through. There's some nostalgia in it because tapes were how I first started watching DBZ.

I also updated the first post with answers that I have and still need. Thanks to everyone that's chimed in so far!

Did anyone tell you that you have insane projects? Still, it's interesting to learn about all the releases Dragonball has had.

I've actually been working on a VHS Guide to compliment the site's DVD guide for a few years now. Most of your questions have been answered already, but I can definately say editted GT VHS tapes exist. I own most of the series in that format.

I have a question. Amazon has a listing for a sub VHS of GT. Was it actually released, and were any other released?
