How Many Times Have You Bought DBZ?

Post by Soul » Sun Oct 23, 2011 8:45 am

It's a question I kinda sigh and chuckle at, especially since I haven't been a "bigger" fan of Dragon Ball in general for that long; added I've said before, if it wasn't for Kai? I wouldn't care that much for the Z portion in general nor would my appreciation for the original anime have been manifested.
That said, I hear the story from long-time fans or ha, "The Old Timers" even, who have purchased the series a bevy of times.
The Edited VHS/DVDs, The Uncut DVDs, The Ultimate Uncut Editions, The Orange Season Sets and so on.
I guess for myself I lucked out because I started buying the original Z with...the Dragon Boxes.
But I gotta know Daizex members, how many times have you bought Z, if anything mainly the Saiyan arc I'd say eh?
And also...how many more times would you buy it?

I've bought tidbits of the VHS here and there, and I picked up a few DBoxes, really, all of my interest has been spent into the manga and Kai.

The manga, DBOX and Kai is the only ones I have ever bought. :D besides all the video games of course. :P

Anime wise,...

I'll start off saying I haven't touched Kai, and I'm not sure I'm going to at all. Maybe somewhere down the line when it's super cheap. Maybe.

I've bought the complete Z series twice now, Orange Bricks and then Z Dragon Boxes. I too was one of the unlucky fans who started with the VHS though, then moved on to DVDs, then this, then that, etc. I was lucky enough that I never completed the previous sets, so I didn't spend as much money as I could have...

GT I've bought twice as well. All the DVD singles and then the Green Bricks. I was happy with the singles, but when the bricks were announced, I wanted the entire series in a single format...but that still hasn't happened.

DB I bought the original DVD sets, but started too late and was never able to finish due to the outrageous prices for some of the earlier arcs, plus whole first arc "doesn't have a current release because of license issues" deal. When the Blue Bricks were announced, I was ecstatic. I could finally own the ENTIRE series, DB to GT, in one format...but then this whole Dragon Box fiasco started. I opted out of buying the Blue Bricks in hope that we would see an original Dragon Box as well.

For the Movies, I bought the singles for what was available at the time. But then I also bought the double features out of necessity, as I've scratched the original DVDs all to hell. I currently own all of what Funimation dubs as "Movies" here in the US for Z and GT, but only the first 3 released DB "Movies". I haven't bought the recent 4-Pack, and I don't really want to...

I'm hoping for Dragon Box releases for everything else eventually, that'll probably bite me in the ass down the line though. Sadly, I just don't have the money to keep buying release after release like I used to, so I really just want one consistently good release format for everything.

I've been lucky and cautious enough to avoid buying DBZ until the Dragon Boxes came out. When I finish getting them, I'll finally have all of DBZ.

I have a single Androids arc VHS tape from way back in the day, but I don't count it.

Let's see, if we're talking about the TV series/movies combined...
- Fansub VHS
- Dubbed VHS
- FUNI single DVDs
- Season Sets
- Double Features
- Dragon Boxes

Yeah... too many times. I'm stopping with the DBox releases since those are the best quality so far. That and other anime deserve my money too (Fist of the North Star n' Turn A Gundam, baby!)
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Oy...this question makes my wallet hurt! But still, lots of fond (well, sometimes) collecting memories...

I started with the manga; I had a subscription to Viz's Shonen Jump when I was younger which I mainly read for One Piece and Yu-Gi-Oh!, but I'd heard a lot about this "Dragon Ball Z" thing from friends, and in one issue, I started reading the series. My first chapter was the one where Goku and Gohan come out of the Room of Spirit and Time. I started buying Graphic Novels with DBZ volume 16, which i where I started my collection, and later doubled back to get everything else.

Since I was most familiar with the Cell Arc, I started buying DVDs there; first, I got the "Sacrafice" single DVD, where Goku dies, which I watched to death, and had a few other singles over the next couple of years, mostly from the Cell Arc. When I watched the series, it was mostly dubbed on Cartoon Network. I bought the first Ultimate Uncut DVD, but then fell behind, and when they announced the season sets, I was overjoyed! I didn't care about widescreen at the time, and was just happy I could buy and watch the whole series on a budget, and be able to watch it in Japanese! I bought up to Season Seven, but fell behind. I'd gradually started to hate the video quality and cropping of the sets, and was even thinking about trying to track down singles.

Then the Dragon Boxes were announced. There was much rejoicing, and I sold the season sets to pay for them. I dabbled in collecting Kai, but ultimately found I preferred the original version of the series, especially in Dragon Box form. Now that I own all seven boxes, I think I'm done with buying DBZ for the foreseeable future. The Blu-Ray release is intriguing, but not enough to dethrone the wonderful Dragon Boxes (which also have the best, most comprehensive packaging of any TV series set I've ever owned.) It's so cool now to just think of an episode or arc I want to watch and know it's right there on my shelf!

So in total....I've bought DBZ twice, and tried to collect it a third or fourth time.

Well let's see, I've purchased...

1. The old FUNimation\Pioneer VHS box sets. I got these when VHS was still pretty much the default home media. So that cost me a little over $200.00. What a waste in retrospect.

2. The three DBZ movies released by Pioneer on VHS.

3. The FUNimation in-house "uncut" VHS tapes, up to the middle of the Android arc.

4. The 2 FUNimation\Pionner (series) box sets on DVD. Sure they were edited but I still wanted them for nostalgia!

5. The 3 FUNimation\Pioneer "Movie Trilogy" box set on DVD.

6. All of the single 3 to 4 episode discs from FUNimation.

7. Movies 4 - 13 and the TV specials on DVD from FUNimation.

8. The short lived "Ultimate Uncut" DVD line.

9. Movies 1 - 3 FUNimation box set.

10. The Orange Bricks.

11. The Dragon Ball Z movie double features on Blu-ray. I like the movies with that cropped widescreen look and these were, so... yea.

12. The Dragon Box sets.

13. And now - Dragon Ball Z 1.1 on Blu-ray.

Holy crap, when I write it out like this I feel like a FUNimation whore. And this isn't counting the old fan-sub VHS tapes, DB, DBGT, DBZK or the Japanese releases.

I think I just put Gen Fukunaga's kids through college.

I bought seasons 3 up to somewhere past the other world tournament in VHS (which covers the early Faulconer plus a little past what I worked on)

I have the orange bricks up through the Cell saga I think(too lazy to go downstairs and look), plus some earlier DVDs, scattered through stuff I worked on, like Garlic Jr series, Trunks' first appearance, Vegeta's death (by Frieza), Imp. Cell's first appearance.

I haven't bought any of the movies, GT, DB, Jpn only versions, or Kai. I do have a couple DB manga lying around somewhere.

I bought tidbits of DBZ and GT on VHS. I think I bought 2 GT singles on DVD. I also own the first three DBZ movies and movie 9 on VHS. I also have the GT movie on DVD.

From there I've bought the entire series in their DVD Brick format. I have all 4 DB movies on DVD. I also have all the steel books on DVD, but I'm a lil embarrassed to admit I double-dipped and re-bought them all on blu-ray. I also have all of Kai on blu-ray.

With the release of an Orange Brick blu-ray over the horizon, I've thought about double-dipping like I did with the movies, but decided I'll only do it if they re-release DB & GT on blu-ray.

I've double dipped in video games too. Once. I bought Budoaki Tenkaichi and hated it. I heard BT2 was supposed to be a million times better and bought it for PS2 and hated it as well. Then I tried out the Wii version when it came out and it breathed new life in the BT series for me and I ended up buying that version as well.

Well if we're counting all of Z:

- I bought a couple of VHS copies of some of the movies (#4 and #5 specifically) when I was much younger.
- bought the season 3 orange brick dvds.
- bought the first two volumes of the Kai blu-rays
-bought Dragon Box vol. 1, 3, 4, and 5.

Dragon Ball:
Some random old sets, (specifically the Tournament-, Red Ribbon- and "Tien Shinhan"-sagas) the old movie 3-pack... And that's it.

Z:
Season One and Two, 2 singles with the episodes immediately following Season Two, both TV-specials via the old singles (Bardock being the Australian version), the first two movies... And all seven US Dragon Boxes plus the Japanese Special Selection DVD, rendering all but the dual-feature of movies 1 and 2 obsolete.

GT:
...The first two "Lost Episodes" singles.

Manga:
Got the entirety of the series via the Norwegian translation, considering possibly picking up the Kanzenban at some point.

So yeah, haven't bought any portion of the series more than twice.

Well, if I'm gonna be serious about it.... fine. (Most of these tapes I have in storage)

Dragon Ball Z

- History of Trunks uncut VHS

- Scattered uncut FUNi VHS tapes (1 Android, 1 Imperfect Cell, 1 Perfect Cell, 2 Cell Games, 2 Great Saiyaman)

- Scattered edited FUNi VHS tapes (1 Captain Ginyu, 1 World Tournament)

- The four Perfect Cell tapes, uncut.

- The four Babidi tapes, Uncut.

- A few edited Fusion tapes, dunno where they went.

- Remastered sets 1-3, 5-9. (Which I sold off)

- All of the Android-Cell games arcs on single DVD. (Sold off, except for a few Cell games)

- The Kid Buu (final episodes) arc on DVD. (Sold off)

- Dragon Ball Z Dragon Boxes 1-6 (Have yet to buy 7)

Dragon Ball GT

- The two "Super 17" tapes, edited.

- The five "Shadow Dragon" tapes, edited.

- All of GT (minus the first 15 "Lost Episodes" on DVD.

So, yeah. Most of my DBZ viewing (when the series wasn't on TV) was through whatever tapes I could get, mostly. be it edited or uncut tapes. If it had that logo on it, it was mine. And yes, I bought a few Remastered sets cause I was naive (and haven't even watched the Saiyan or Namek episodes before-hand) and honestly thought they were the final DVD release. I've recently sold off all my DVDs, (aside from GT, I like those episodes previews) wish I had some way to get rid of the tapes lol.

But now I have the Dragon Boxes. That IS my Dragon Ball Z series collection. I still plan on buying Z Kai, but with the whole music debacle still going on... that's being put on-hold for the time being.

And I have no interest in the Blu-Rays whatsoever. That is all.
Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!

Fan of Dragon Ball Z and various other Anime since '98! ^^

I only bought the first 3 season sets of Dragon Ball Z then I give them away to my cousin to get the Dragon Boxes. I don't really count Kai as buying Z again because it's a totally different animal.

Relatively few, for this board, I think. I've made scattered purchases here and there, but the only time I actually set out to collect the entire series was with the blue bricks, GT "Complete Series" set and the Dragon Boxes, so the double-dipping's been fairly minimal. I no longer own everything listed here (although most of it I do):

Dragon Ball
----------
TV-edit Kidmark set of the first thirteen episodes
Movies one and two on VHS (no longer own)
FUNimation's King Piccolo Saga two-disc sets 1 and 2
All five blue season sets
The recent movie 4-pack

Dragon Ball Z
------------
Movies one, four, five and six on VHS (no longer own)
Movies seven, eight and nine DVD singles (no longer own)
The Pioneer "Arrival" VHS (no longer own)
"Kid Buu" saga DVD box set (no longer own)
The first three orange season sets
Dragon Boxes one-five (will pick up the last two before the end of the year)
All double-feature DVDs except Movies three and four

Dragon Ball GT
------------
All single DVDs except Baby Saga #6-8 (no longer own Babay Saga #1-5)
The TV special single DVD
The green "Complete Series" release

Manga
-----------
About seven or so scattered tankobon from Viz's initial release. Can't even remember which volumes.

Thankfully for me, I haven't bought the series as much as other folks on the board.

For Dragon Ball, I have a few scattered singles, from the Daimao arc, and the 1st blue brick.
Z, I have all 7 Dragon Boxes, and some DVD uncut singles from the Buu arc and Captain Ginyu: Double Cross. I also have the UUE starter set. I also have the 1st and 2nd steelbooks, and the three Pioneer released movies.
For GT, I have the Complete Series green brick and the Generations DVD single.
For the manga, I have all 42 tankobon as released by Viz in the two "Complete Series" boxsets, all 14 VizBigs, and two of the monthly comic book style releases from Viz.

Thankfully, the only things I need to buy these days are the 4 other blue bricks, and then I'll wait for an eventual Z Movies Dragon Box. If somehow, some way, DBoxes for the original series, it's movies, and GT come out then I'll buy those.

Replace the VHS tape with Season 3 and you've got my situation. Don't own anything from the other two series.

Tenkaichi 2 Wii really should have had that effect on people much more than it did. Aside from the nunchuck-for-flight mechanic discouraging flying around like a banshee, at least on the default set-up, those controls have kept me playing the game to this day. Nunchuck-dashing is the most intuitive action the thing's ever been assigned, I swear.

Put me in this group as well. I had so much fun with Tenkaichi 2 on the Wii that it re-ignited my interest in Dragon Ball, which I hadn't touched in the three or four years prior. Tenkaichi 3 in particular has some of the best-integrated motion controls on the system; I can't imagine playing these games with a normal control. I tried it once; it was nightmarishly difficult and incredibly boring.

Coincidence dominoes (Yeah, came up with that on the fly :? ), same here, only axe T3 from the equation (Never bothered). I pretty much went straight from the Toonami airings, to the video games, with T2 elevating the series to enough interest to consider purchasing DVDs, then I found Daizex last year. Although I'm still one of those... bilingual, I guess, fans who knew what the Dragon Boxes were in some capacity before Funi localized them, but that's a tidbit.

Ironically, I got the original Tenkaichi as a parting gift from a friend, played it to death (With a PS2 controller, no dur), and now T2 has destroyed my ability to play that way.

I don't own as much as some people do on here, but I do have quite a bit of the series at the moment. If anything, I don't own much of the manga at the moment, but I'm hoping to soon change that.

For DragonBall:

-The first 3 Blue Bricks
-The Tenshinhan Saga box set
-Movies 2-4 via the FUNi Movie Box

For Z:

-All 7 Dragon Boxes
-The first 7 Ultimate Uncut DVDs
-First Orange Brick (Which I'm planning to sell soon)
-All of the movie singles except for Movie 4. I have a duplicate Movie 1 because of the First Strike set.
-The original 2000 releases of the Bardock and Trunks specials.

For GT:

-The first Green Brick
-The Lost Episodes box set
-The Late Bebi/Super #17 box set
-The TV special

For the manga:

-Volumes 1-3 (Viz)
-Volume 1 of the Z Vizbig edition
