Now, I'm not sure this has been brought up before, but what was with Nail admitting to Freeza that Dende was on the way to the Earthlings with the password? He should have kept his mouth shut and bought them more time.

Well, it did end up with Freeza being too late to grant his wish, but Nail didn't know for sure it would. It just seems like he was uncharacteristically arrogant.

Nail was a warrior-type so I assume being overly smart isn't in his job description but whatever.
We can also assume Nail figured they were far enough away from where Dende and the others were so Freeza would not be able to reach them in time.
Don't forget Freeza couldn't sense Ki anyway so Nail may have taken that into account too.

Freeza also didn't know that Porunga only understands wishes made in Namekian.
Nail would probably know that too.

In conclusion Nail was giving Freeza a taste of his own arrogance.
Somewhat knowing that Freeza would be very unlikely to get his wish granted.

Surgeon during long operation is also at his limits. Would you allow him to leave a needle in a skin before putting last stitch and start chatting with nurse because he was on his last leg? Sure that was stressful situation, but Nail wasn't the first grader fighting with his classmate on the school's backyard. He is a warrior. Fighting an opponent whose limits he doesn't know. And he just tell him about their last hope? Even if he had known that there's no way Frieza would manage to get him on time it would have been just plain dumb.

The reason Vegeta didn't get his wish was because the Namekian elder died, which would have happened anyway. But mortal Vegeta probably would have killed Dende et al, so your point still stands. Not that Nail could have known any of this.

Whoops, that's right. For some reason I was thinking Freeza's arrival delayed the third wish. But yeah, it did buy them time against Vegeta, which gave them a chance to work together against Freeza until Piccolo and Gokuu eventually showed up.

Yeah, that wasn't exaclty the smartest decision on his part, but I'm thinking that it's a good thing that he did it. It forced Freeza to leave suddenly , otherwise I think he would've been killed. Without him there for Piccolo to fuse with, they all would have been killed by Freeza.

Also, the guy lost his entire race, Guru was about to die, he was getting the crap beaten out of him, even I don't know if I could have stopped myself from doing something to wipe that arrogant grin of Freeza's face at that moment.

It was a short display of pride that he'd managed to stall Freeza well enough. Plus, the fact that Freeza rushed to the dragonballs saved his life... sort of. So really it's not so bad.

Another dick move was that he didn't help the Earthlings and Vegeta against the Ginyu force. What good is it to protect the Elder if everyone else are dead, and your power isn't enough to defeat even Capt. Ginyu.

Nail simply felt that he had lasted Freeza's beating long enough for Dende to reach the Earthlings and have them grant their wish, and he was right.

Concerning the "dick move" of him protecting the Great Elder rather than helping Vegeta and the Earthlings against the Ginyu Force, I think you have to realize that he probably feels its his job to protect his parent who could've been killed by Freeza in his absence.

What good would protecting the Elder do, when they knew that his life was going to an end? Normally in these kind of situations, the elders die for the younger generation.
I understand the feelings that Nail would have had, and his reasons, but it's still a dick move to let the Earthlings (who had no obligation to help the Namekians at all, and sacrificed themselves) die due to him not being able to let go of his father (who actually didn't mind being sacrificed for his people, in fact, he sent Nail away).
