Viz "Censorship"
In the latest Podcast, Julian noted that the Viz Manga releases have been changing "Mr. Satan" to "Her-cule" as a censor he found particularly annoying and had stopped following the Viz Dragonball Z Manga because of it. Also, in an I'm conversation with VegettoEX, he spoke fairly severly of the Viz Manga being very poor as of late and having a lot of unnecessary changes, though he didn't cite any examples.
Though it would require possibly buying them, I was wondering if Julian (or something else with solid knowledge and ownership of the Japanese Manga) could "side by side" the two and compare them for anything besides the Mr. Satan change. While I do find that name change particularly annoying, it is my thought that it was done for continuity between the most known Funimation name. This is a stupid move, but I knew him as Her-cule first anyway so I can get over it.
I am also aware of Mr. Popo's lips being erased as well as #17's gun when he kills the old man in the Future timeline. Is there anything else, dialogue or othewise? (preferably refering to the volumes that include the "Her-cule" change.)
Thank you.
Edit x4 - The Board Censor that changes Her-cule to Mr. Satan became a bit annoying for this post...

Well, the continuity thing itself doesn't make sense, since Viz actually used to more or less mock FUNimation in the early days, and we have "Kuririn" in Viz and all. So them suddenly using dub names is just.. nonsense. I have smiliar bitching about "Zolo" and "Maximillion Pegasus".
They also changed 16's "Hell's Flash" to "Inferno Blast".

The Inferno Blast bit doesn't seem like to big of a deal to me, since oftentimes Hell and Inferno are used interchangebly. I heard that the Zolo thing had to do more with copyright reasons than anything else though. Whether it was that the guys with the rights to Zorro threatened to sue or something else, I don't know.

But Zoro and Zorro are different. =/ His name's written in English as "Zoro", even.Whether it was that the guys with the rights to Zorro threatened to sue or something else, I don't know.
Also, "Hell" is said in English in the attack, so this is a definite name change instead of alternate translation.

Personally, I don't think Viz does such a great job at times. Goku sounds too much like a redneck during the early parts of the Saiyan saga, and sometimes they write the translation of an attack, but put for the Kikohou the Chinese name (isn't the English name, Energy Conduit, or something?).

Proves me wrong, well at least it's not Tokyo Pop translating the manga, anyone read their Battle Royale? I swear, some of those insults sound so American.B-kun wrote:^^;;; Goku's supposed to sound like a redneck, actually. That part they got right.

Never mind edits, I wouldn't buy from VIZ based on principle. They used to be pretty decent for a little while, but now they're just a horrible company (probably the worst in the industry right now). They show little respect for their properties, and even less respect for the fans. They just do what's most beneficial to themselves.
Just look at their re-issue of the DragonBall tankoubon. After releasing about half the series, they suddenly decide to change the formats of the books, and screw over everybody who was collecting the original releases. Now you have the option of either having a screwed up collection, or re-buying the books all over again... Not to mention this marked their 4th release of volumes 1-3.
Then there's the whole thing where they sometimes edit Jump, but not the tankoubon. Why? Are the people who subscribe to Jump not good enough to read it uncut? And don't even get me started on their shitty DVD releases...

At least Viz didn't censor out Yamcha seeing Bulma in the shower in Dragonball. That was funny and well...
You guys know what I'm about to say huh? I'm such a perv.
All of DB is rated T and all of Z is rated A, even though Z has quite a lot of cussing.
Chi-Chi talks like a huge redneck also.

Apparently, Chi-Chi and Piccolo are as well. Piccolo uses 'Demon Folk' a lot, which I, for some reason, find extremely funny.^^;;; Goku's supposed to sound like a redneck, actually. That part they got right.

I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.
Actually, they did. It wasn't until the fans complained enough that they started releasing the books uncut with a "13 and up" label on the cover. I don't think they ever officially had an uncut DBZ release, though.Chaos Saiyajin wrote:At least Viz didn't censor out Yamcha seeing Bulma in the shower in Dragonball.

Yeah, I think it was a father, though. He bought it for his kid from Toys 'R Us, and was disgusted by the content and complained. Toys 'R Us ended up pulling the series from their shelves, and that's when VIZ first started censoring the manga. (You can probably still hunt down the original newspaper article, I think Planet Namek might have had it).
After some serious complaints from fans, they eventually started putting the labels on the covers and releasing the books uncut. I don't think they ever got the Toys 'R Us market back though, which is obviously what they were trying to re-gain by censoring the books.
Now they're trying to kiss ass to the FUNimation and 4Kids dub markets by censoring Jump to be more "dub friendly". Bleh.
