Akira Toriyama and the English dub.

I was just wondering if Akira Toriyama has ever had any thoughts on the English dub of DB. Did he ever say that "even the voices and music for english dub is superior to the jap"?

If he said anything at all, it was the standard "I am honored that my work is attracting so much interest, and happy that people all over the world are able to enjoy it" line. It's Toriyama.

Alternatively, his reply was "Dragon-what? Is that something Oda-kun made?"

He totally did. He said he especially enjoyed the terrible inaccuracy and poor voice acting in the English dub. SO SUPERIOR.

He then clarified that he did in fact plan on ending the show at the Frieza saga until Shuiesha sent the Yakuza after him.

It has always been my understanding that Akira Toriyama is a bit of a recluse. Am I mistaken?
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:

Well he did say Freeza was meant to be a girl and that the English dub did him a favor-... Wait sorry, I should know better than to remember something I read off Dragon Ball Wiki.

Why would he care? Unless there is some article describing how vocal he is about other translation, I doubt he cares. Considering that, from what I understand, the Japanese tend to be modest when it comes to these things, I'm sure he's just happy that people around the world can experience his work.


Besides, artists tend not to share the same rabid enthusiasm for their work that fanboys tend to have.

I think there was an interview where he mentions something like warning the anime satff when he felt like they were going in a wrong direction with something in the anime.

I remember reading somewhere once that Toriyama had commented on liking Vegeta's original English voice, Brian Drummond. I have no links/interviews to back this up, though. Other than that I haven't heard anything about him commenting on it.

I have a lot of friends who had relatives go through these days. It remains hurtful to them.

Yes, the racism towards Japanese-Americans was absolutely cruel and unnecessary. But come on, we all know the context of the word being used here,and in this instance, it's not being used as a derogatory term against the Japanese.

A word is only a word, and can only harm others if we give it power.
