Yes. Exactly. My point was that even compared to 720p channels I still notice a considerable difference in quality, let alone standard definition.BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:Part of that would be HD channels using some form of compressed 720p, while Blu-Rays are always straight 1080p, I imagine.rereboy wrote:Well, in my (modern) TV and in my sound system I'm constantly blown away on how much better the Blurays I own are compared to the DVDs I own, and even compared to the HD channels on my TV. I haven't really experienced it for myself as of yet, seeing as the only Blu-Ray movie I've ever watched in person is Dragonball Evolution (Not kidding).

There's so many pages and posts on technical stuff and all sorts of things, but I'll ask a blunt question:
Does it look good?

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
This is all just blowing me away. I was not expecting the remaster to be NEARLY this good. Still not sure if I'll get it, but the fact that I'm even thinking about getting it is a huge sign in and of itself since I initially swore this off as "just another re-release" when they announced it. That FUNimation could take their old film masters and remaster them to the point where they could even possibly compete with the Dragon Box masters is....well, quite a feat.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Just got this set this morning, watching it now. I just wanna throw my two cents in here now that I've actually seen this.
The good: I think these episodes look awesome! I'm very happy with the picture quality. I feel like I'm even finding things I've never seen before, little details here and there or something in the background, stuff like that. It's really pretty amazing. People should also keep in mind that these are the first episodes and are probably amongst the most beat up and aged of the series. They show it too in any DBZ DVD line you get, there's just no way around it, they look their age. But here, they actually look really good. And if these episodes look this good now, then we're in for some great looking episodes later on!
The Bad: The thing I don't like about this set is the format. No Japanese title cards, no next episode previews, no Japanese credits on the (wrong) opening and (correct) closing. These are the only things killing me right now. Sure FUNimation seems to have long done away with alternate angles and I really didn't expect them to be on this set but still, I don't like that.
At least if you have the Japanese subtitles on you can have the Japanese title on the bottom of the screen in English... ::shrugs::
Note: This is NOT a screen shot, this was taken with a digital camera:

And why are they using the movie opening? That's like what they did with the first DVDs they released years ago. Oh well. ::sigh:: Despite the negative aspects though, I think I'm still gonna be picking up other volumes.
I really can't wait for the Daizex review of this set!

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
I do not like the new font for the title cards.
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
They probably used the movie openings so they could change animations as the time comes. Didn't the Season Sets in fact skip the first opening and go to the second animation? Also, I like the new title card font - it doesn't try too hard the way the old one Z did. Why couldn't they have just used this for Kai?
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Well that seems good except for the negative stuff which I don't really care about, I'll start picking these up eventually even when I say a big title will be my first Blu-Ray purchase... it never happens. I've owned a blu-ray player for years and never bought a movie/show.

Just curious, would anyone happen to know what "newly revised English dialogue" there is?

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
So many comments making my head spin.
I'll only comment on one at the moment...
The PS3 generally upscales quite well. It is in no way outdated, and is often the BD player of choice for people who don't want to worry about update issues (as it keeps getting updated because it's still sold, while many players sold three, or even two years ago, you won't get any more updates, which can leave you with all sorts of problem.) It can play a Blu-ray 3d disk perfectly well, it just can't do 3d AND lossless audio at the same time. Most people wouldn't notice the difference, and even if they can, they don't have the equipment where it'd make much of a deal.
I also recall someone saying that menu's for some reason aren't 3d... but well... who cares if the menu isn't 3d (which all of this only counts if you care about 3d at home in the first place.)
It's still the easiest to recommend Blu-ray player.
As for the last chunk of your post. I get the jist of what you are saying, but honestly...it's a mess, I suggest you reread the rule regarding grammar, as you agreed to it when you came to the forum.

No... just no.enapace wrote:The colours also make a difference. Also some blu-rays players upscale really well I agree you will never get proper HD but it close. A ps3 does not count as even that can technically be classed as outdated Blu-ray player as it behind the times as it can't play 3d blu-ray right as it only has a hdmi 1.3 output when you really need a 1.4. Also I have to put out this is a dead anime show really I will give you kai came out but it not really the same and even kai is over now.

I actually like the new font for the title cards, I've had enough of Funi trying to make DBZ hardcore. I noticed that the subtitle font looks pretty clear, too.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:![]()

Other than erroneously having the movie 1 stamp on the logo, I'm pretty sure it's the right opening.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:no Japanese credits on the (wrong) opening

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
I'm in for these if they release Dragonball on Blu ray as well. I just want a consistent format for the series since a Dragonball dragonbox or a kai version of Dragonball is unlikely.
Just wish Funi/Toei would stop pretending that the original series never happened :/

No it's the wrong one. It has the wrong animation. This is the movie opening not the TV version.Puto wrote:Other than erroneously having the movie 1 stamp on the logo, I'm pretty sure it's the right opening.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:no Japanese credits on the (wrong) opening
