Some love for the orange bricks! *Contest!*

Post by dexterp » Thu Oct 27, 2011 3:19 pm

I know FUNimation's remasters are hated a lot, and with good reason… BUT I'd go as far to say that there are some very good points about this set. I mean, yeah, missing detail and painted black bars aren't great, but hear me out.

All of the colour correction makes the series look like a new anime. Newer anime lacks the detail and refinement of older anime, newer anime being much more simplistic most of the time. This, for me, makes the series much more accessible to newer fans and overall I do think the colours and extremely clean image leave an epic impact. The faux widescreen does give the anime the most cinematic feel it has had in a long time and I also find this really enjoyable.

Now, I'm not a fan of the messing with something that's already brilliant and I do think FUNimation could've done more, but no matter what Funimation does there will always be part of the fanbase that dislikes the decision. DBZ is a phenomena that brought together completely different crowds, from purists to the people who just love a good action show.

The Contest

Can you do better? This gets asked a lot so let's see what people can draw. Redraw a frame from DBZ with comparison to a similar scene from any of the orange boxes.

1st place prize - DBGT Baby Saga Boxset
2nd - DBGT Evolution volume DVD
3rd - Dragon Ball Path To Power
4th - Lucky Star Box Set
5th - Dragon Ball Mystical Adventure
6th - Midori Days
7th - Full Metal Alchemy Vol. 1

That's a total of 7 prizes! The rest of you get a "well done"

Contest Runs until the 1st December all entrants welcome.

And if you have an orange brick to get rid of, I'll gladly take it off your hands

Update: over at http://www.ukdb.net, I've already had a submission and it looks amazing. If the below image is anything to go by, then this is going to be an amazing contest.

Good luck everyone!

I think this is severely misnamed and would be more understandable if you related it to Kai or something.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I really, really dislike that Vegeta right there.
Please tell me this isn't in first place.

Yeah, I'm not sure I get the orange brick connection, especially since they're not even the prizes. I mean, Kai did significant color-correction, too, and was arguably far more "correct" than anything FUNimation did prior. Their upcoming Blu-ray sets also have color-correction, and that's far more accurate than the orange bricks.

Nothing about widescreen means "cinematic", either. Movies were originally 4:3. DBZ's movies were all animated in 4:3, albeit cropped later on.

It looks like all you want is "trace me DBZ scenes digitally", and you're assigning mostly random prizes to them.

It would be cool to get a little orange brick discussion out of this thread. The example posted is just one submission. Tracing projects can be submitted, but this contest is all about creativity and good looking artwork.

In relation to the orange bricks: This contest is basically asking for the fanbases' version of the orange brick. How should it have looked in your opinion?

In my opinion, I expected them to look like the Blu-Rays. But sadly, they were bleached to hell.

I think this is a good idea, although the whole orange-brick comparison thing is weird......... anyway, if only I could draw then I would have a go at it, but I can't.

PS: That picture of Vegeta looks like a redrawn Kai scene, except that his facial expression is laughable! I can't possible draw that good, so I'll stop the criticism.

Here's my submission. It's my interpretation of what the Goku vs Vegeta fight looks like on the Orange Bricks:

Other than the fact that it's in fullscreen, that seems to be a fairly accurate portrayal of the orange bricks.

Oh damn, you're right. Here's the "remastered" version: I think it's a lot more cinematic:

I'll take a stab at this!

I love the season sets so much, but they just weren't remastered enough! Season two was the most remastered, but I'd go even further, because even there I can still see some skin tones and some blurry vestiges of grain.

Here's the original shot:
Image

Here's my remastered shot!:
Image

Sure it's missing 2/3rds of the image, but so what? It looks even more cinematic now! You're not missing anything important, just hair and body. So what if the hair becomes pitch black and the skin becomes pure white; I just don't care, because now his eyes are white and now the outlines are pure black, as any animator will tell you is necessary to tell a good tale! I also corrected that awful green sky and made it blue, because why would the sky be green? It's not as though they're on another planet or something. Also, while I was at it, I boosted the blue altogether, as blue is my favorite color!

I also completely removed any trace of grain whatsoever, and now it looks like it was made 5 minutes ago! Also, though 2/3rds of the vertical ratio is missing, you now gain an astonishing 5% of footage on the sides which shows footage that the animators intended, but just couldn't show in the outdated 4x3 viewing area! That's my life's dream fulfilled right there, as I've always wondered what the rest of Vegeta's shoulder pad looked like in that shot, and now I know! Though the noise reduction removed lots of line work, it actually makes it look more dramatic, as though Vegeta's OVAR NINETHOUSAAAAND!!!1 powar levl is making the film tear due to his maximum power.

I love life.

*ahem*

Anyways, on a serious note:

Yeah, the Blu-rays, which seem to have been through as extensive a process as the Dragon Boxes, but I feel they are inferior for reasons outside of FUNimation's control.

I just don't get the mindset of everything having to be OMFG NEW. Why limit yourself, and why want something to be what it's not? This extends to practically everything.

Great, Metalwario64, you made me spit water all over my computer screen. That was freakin hilarious! No, but seriously, why are we even talking about the orange bricks anymore? The only good things they had were the Faulcner track and marathon mode. That doesn't even matter since a lot of people don't care for the Faulcner track or marathon mode, and now that the blu-rays have all of that stuff, plus superior image quality, I don't see how the orange bricks will survive.

Complete with dat cinematic feel and colors, makes it look like It was fresh outta the Toei bargain bin.
GT isn't bad, just sucks ass in comparison to the other 2 animes.

Downscaled to save forum width, feel free to request full size image. I did fuck up slightly on the right hand side of Kuri's head, but it's very minor.

Hurray for Gimp.

I don't really understand what this contest is, but here's mine:

Shouldn't this thread be in Fan-Created Works section, anyway?
