Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
I believe ect5150 did something to that effect, but I don't have the files with me...
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
Hell, I just wish kei released all the episodes' audio, period. I can do the synching on my own.bkev wrote:Man, I just wish kei would make his rips available as audio files timed to the dragonbox. Of course, that would be a LOT of work (having to reorder the NEPs, etc) but that would be awesome.

Agreed. Even just a few episodes would be fine for me.

Hm. If someone wants to give me the lossless version of the soundtrack to the 'original broadcast' SSJ2 Gohan file, I'll rip my own DragonBox and play with a basic EQ of it.bkev wrote:I believe ect5150 did something to that effect, but I don't have the files with me...

Goku turns Super Saiyan 3 scene will be uploaded later today.
Personally, it's not one of my favourite scenes in Japanese but i'll still do it for comparison's sake.

I don't think Kei ever uploaded that scene other than on YouTube, but that'd obviously be compressed, so my copy's no good.MajinVejitaXV wrote:Hm. As far as I know, they aren't that valued there. People are just passively satisfied with them because they are the only official dvd box releases they've got. In addition, the fan base in Japan is significantly different than that here. People there do not care smaller things. I mean, the DB series is strongly regarded as a kids show and the fans do not care about any technical things on the official releases unlike the dedicated folks here. It's one of the reasons why I love this community.TheBlackPaladin wrote:I read somewhere that apparently the Dragon Boxes aren't regarded with nearly as much respect in Japan as they are here.
I myself tried that many times, but I gained nothing comparable to the old recordings. You can't get something already lost by equalising. Here's a shot comparing both the DBOX and VHS sounds from DBZ episode 5 with spectral frequency display on Adobe Audition:MajinVejitaXV wrote:Has anyone ever taken the DragonBox audio and EQ'd it? It really sounds like the only substantial difference to me. Scoop the mids, increase the low and high frequencies and boom: same as kei17's VHS/Beta copies. Which makes sense, seeing as the VHS/Betamax copies probably have some sort of equalization being done either when recorded or being played back for capture (or both) anyway.

(DBOX / VHS)
The VHS audio has much noise, but you can also clearly see that it's got more natural high-tone range, which cannot be gained by any kind of equalising. Anyway, hearing is believing. I uploaded some loss-less audio clips from the VHS/Betamax recordings. You can compare them with your EQ'd DBoxes.
Piccolo's Makankosappo (Episode 5)
Vegeta vs Namekians (Episode 51)
Gohan Transforms into SSJ2
Well, let me point out that the last one of Gohan's transformation doesn't sound as much good as the other two because it's from one of the Betamax recordings, which were recorded in a poor radio wave condition because the owner of those tapes was living in a remote area in Aichi prefecture. The others are from the VHS recordings of my cousin who lives within the areas around Tokyo, where is much closer to Tokyo Tower, so they sound clearer. And, for sure, they are raw that I directly recorded with a PCM recorder.
*Edit: in addition, here is an audio clip from the CD included in "Big Box", which includes the entire audio of episode 229 and 237 in perfect quality, and it's from the same master audio tapes which Fuji TV used for the original broadcast.
Vegeta Kills More People (Episode 229)

The betamax one sounds way better than the Dragonbox audio.
I'll pay this guy to give me the whole series with this audio along with the dragonbox video quality.

The one used in Vegeta's Sacrifice was from a drama CD of that specific episode, so it's higher quality than a betamx/VHS recording.Daimakku wrote:The betamax one sounds way better than the Dragonbox audio.

Piccolo's Makankosappo, Goku turns Super Saiyan 3 and Vegeta vs Namekians will be up in the next few days.

Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
Would it be possible to gather all 291 ep. audios?
I'd definitely LOVE to have with clean audio and better quality.

Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
Were the movies in a similar situation? Did they ever have cleaner-sounding audio and better master tapes?
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
The movies were much more well-preserved. I do believe they did keep the tapes, as Dragon Box: The Movies sounds fucking superb. (That is a severe understatement.)TheBlackPaladin wrote:Were the movies in a similar situation? Did they ever have cleaner-sounding audio and better master tapes?
Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
Nope, the movies sound superb. Hell, movie 13 and the anniversary movie are presented in Dolby Stereo Surround, run these babies through Pro-LogicIIx (or any surround sound processor) and you got yourself a nice surround field.TheBlackPaladin wrote:Were the movies in a similar situation? Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
It's insane how much of a difference there is. I wonder why that is?

Re: Dragon Box vs Original Broadcast - The Audio
Just a suggestion to make it easier to tell the difference, you should play a 5 second clip of one and then the same clip of the other.
Something like this.

I don't really understand your comment. What are you trying to say, besides sounding amazing?Daimo-Rukiri wrote:Maybe, if anyone saw them in theaters but as for the dbox release they sound amazing!Krycek7o2 wrote:Nope, the movies sound superb. I usually run these two films through Pro-LogicIIx or THX Neural 7.1 and to my ears, they are quite pleasant.
