Sean Schemmel's Grunting

Post by Pikkoro Daimaō » Thu Nov 03, 2011 4:39 am

Is there a reason why Sean grunts so much while playing Goku? It seems too excessive and is just one of the reasons I prefer watching Dragon Ball Z subbed. I mean, just look at episode 72 of Kai. He is grunting while putting on his belt and wrist bands... Seems a little off putting.

I love Sean Schmmel :) In my opinion he has a Great voice for Goku
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

I'm not saying he bad or anything, he has improved greatly since he started in season 3 of Dbz. I just feel the grunting is sometimes over the top. It just sticks out to me while watching. He did the same while playing Lucario in the Pokemon movie, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.

Blame voice direction as well. If the directors wanted something other than grunts they'd ask for them. Also, grunting noises are often used in favor of the "kccch" noises you hear in the original Japanese versions anyway.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
You're right that it is the director's decision, however, I just feel that Schemmel is adding to it as well since in 'Lucario and the Mystery of Mew', he was grunting the most out of all the other characters. Maybe since he got used to it on Dbz that he carried it over to other roles.

I like the "kccch" noises better. It sounds like the characters are gritting their teeth.

My main problem with Schemmel's voice is that it sounds a bit too grainy/hoarse at times. Goku's normal voice should be lighter. I know Nozawa's Goku is grainy at times, too, but not too heavy. Schemmel's Goku sounds too labored.

His performance has improved, the way he delivers his lines, but the voice can still bother me from time to time.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

What is for sure is that Schemmel does an excellent work with the screaming, compared to before, and much better than what the french Goku is in Kai.

I also prefer the "kccch" to any form of grunting. It gives the feeling that the characters are really struggling to fight back when knocked down. However, with the grunting it just seems like someone needs to get to a toilet ASAP.

Yeah, Nozawa's Goku will always be the voice of Son Goku for me. Seems more fitting and natural and suits to his character perfectly. I have yet to hear any voice other than the Japanese version that has captured his character properly.

Because he gets hot and dirty while performing :D
mmmm.

No, but seriously, it's because it is a cartoon. Cartoons can't achieve the level of facial expression that live-action actors can (cause you know....drawings, bro) so they have to over-emphasize the "grunts" or that weird "kccch" sound in order to make it obvious if a character is feeling anger, or is tired, etc, etc.

The kccch sounds like a far more feminine way of dropping a deuce.
