Even in the original Dragon Ball, it was always implied that Shinhan was his last name.

Yep, but they've been referring to him as Tien for 99% of the dub now, so...

It should be Tien Shinhan at the very least as it was done in DragonBall.

I really don't see the big deal about that--or Tri-Beam. In the latter case, at least it makes sense, like Solar Flare. Special Beam Cannon or Destructo Disc, on the other hand make me want to vomit.
I mean, hey, at least Tien is close to his original name(pretty much a shorthand), and not something unrelated like Shinto. . .

I don't know why they didn't change it to Tenshinhan. If you say Tee-en Shinhan fast enough, you can barely tell the difference. They should've slowly transitioned like they did with Ayres at first.

Because Tien is only two syllables, Tenshinhan is three, I think this way it's easier for them to fit the words with the flaps correctly.

And Ten is one syllable so it would be even easier again to add more dialogue to the flaps.

Re: Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discuss
Yeah, that, and the fact that they don't shorten most other character's names (except Son), and everything works out fine.
Re: Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discuss
Tien sounds Asian (Tien Shen mountain range, for example). Ten sounds like he's the younger brother of Five from Peanuts.Attitudefan wrote:And Ten is one syllable so it would be even easier again to add more dialogue to the flaps.

Re: Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discuss
Why does it matter if a name sounds Asian in a show doesn't take place on our Earth? Although, I think he was putting in much more thought than FUNi did.batistabus wrote:...so? What does that have to do with anything?

Because Toriyama specifically designed various Dragon Ball characters and names around the notion that they would come off as Chinese.AgitoZ wrote:Why does it matter if a name sounds Asian in a show doesn't take place on our Earth? Re: Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discuss
I guess that's true that Tien sounds more asian but It is an unnecessary change by FUNi that is being discussed on another thread. His name is Ten, no matter how stupid it may sound to the English speaking world, but if we had got that first it everyone would be used to it by now. This is just another slap in the face to Dragonball by changing everything around to FUNi's liking, making it their own show instead of Toriyama's story. Re: Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discuss
I think there was a daizex podcast that briefly alluded to the idea that retaining the name-change for Ten had to do with copyright... I didn't listen to it myself so I can't summarize it too well aside from that.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Re: Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discuss
I get that, but that's why I suggested just saying Tee-en Shinhan quickly (Tyenshinhan). Obviously, Ten or Tenshinhan would be preferred.bkev wrote:I think there was a daizex podcast that briefly alluded to the idea that retaining the name-change for Ten had to do with copyright... Why is Ten copyright? It's just a number for god sakes! Really, what's the harm with calling him Ten Shinhan?

I think he(she?) means Tien. If I recall it was when they were talking about the fighting games and mentioned the characters name having copyright and rights reserved marks next to them.Attitudefan wrote:Why is Ten copyright? Well Ten could go by just fine yes? Would Ten Shinhan fall under the same field of copyright when it's separate you think?
