Favorite English Goten

Post by Super Sonic » Mon Nov 07, 2011 12:08 am

Like the title says I thought I'd ask who were you guys' favorite English voice of Goten. I did find a site that did comparisons for his older and younger voices:

Younger Goten

Older Goten

For myself I got to go with Kara Edwards. I like how she did his voice and its fun nature. Not as familiar with the Canadian broadcasts so not as attached to them. And as I didn't really watch GT that much, I'm not attached to Sensui either.

Kara Edwards for Young, Robert McCollum for Older.

If something is truly perfect, that's IT! The bottom line becomes there is no room for imagination! No space for intelligence or ability or improvement! Do you understand? Kara Edwards brings a spritely charm to the character. I think I prefer her.

He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

For young Goten I prefer Jillian Michaels because that is the voice I only heard on YTV when watching Dragon Ball Z so I am used to that.

As for Older Goten I only watched the Japanese version of Dragon Ball Z by the time I got to the Kid Buu saga and same with GT so I will go off of the clips and say I prefer Robert McCollum.

Kara Edwards, it makes Goten that much more adorable.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

For Younger, I'm going to go with Kara Edwards. I think Edwards portrays the innocence and child-like aspects of Goten very well in the way she voices the character. I also agree with penguintruth about the "spritely charm".

For Older, I'm going to go with Robert McCollum. He sounds the most like a teenage/young adult Goten to me. Scott Hendrickson sounded pretty good too.

Kara Edwards is Kid Goten, but the Blue Water voice actor makes him actually sound like a teenager ... But then again so does his Funimation VA. Hm, I'd probably go for Robert McCullen for Teen Goten.

They're good, but they're no Nozawa.

Actually, scratch that, I don't like the English voices at all. Goten's voice just sounds disingenuous to me in English, although I think it's a step up from Goku and Gohan's child voices in the original dubs. Nozawa's Goten is almost unbearably cute and lovable, to the point where I find myself going "awww...." whenever he's on screen. I even like that she manages to make him ever so slightly different than young Goku, which adds variety while reinforcing the theme that Goten is basically Goku's less-motivated reincarnation.

If the discussion is geared specifically towards the English voices, then my answer is certainly Kara Edwards. So much so that I'd have been absolutely livid had Kai recast the role with someone else.

Her early work during the Saiyaman arc was an exercise in finding the right vocals, I think, since it's markedly different from the Goten we hear in later episodes. But in the movies and video games (and especially those games of the last several years), Edwards has perfected her interpretation quite well. Her inflection, tone and pitch are believable for a boy of Goten's age and innocence, and I am rather thoroughly a fan.

I was really looking forward to hearing her reprise the role in Kai. >_<;
