I Miss Yamamoto
I NEVER thought I would miss Yamamoto this badly. I know that it's very, very old news at this point that he has been replaced, but as I'm watching episodes of Kai with the new Kikuchi mix, I am in utter shock sometimes at just how poorly-placed the new music pieces are. I used to complain that Yamamoto's score was repetitive, and now I want it back so badly. I don't care if it was repetitive and not particularly original...the music was just so much more effective in Kai when Toei was using his material.
Not that I have anything against Kikuchi. I love Kikuchi's music. But damn you, Nagasaki, you are making him look bad by placing his music in completely inappropriate places!

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

I always liked Yamamoto's music and I do miss it aswell. The only scene where I thought the Kikuchi mix done better was when Goku's heart virus was starting to effect him during his battle with 19. It's also a shame the music change effected FUNimation's DVD/BluRay release right before Cell. I think Yamamoto's score was at its best in the Cell arc.

Even though I will agree that Kenji would be better, I didn't care for how either soundtrack was done. Kenji's plagiarized scores are so blatantly different from his non plagiarized scores that it almost ruins the mood for me every time they're played.

Well, after obtaining the soundtrack, I would have to say, I'll miss it as well. Granted I'm happy Kai has Kikuchi's score but like some of you guys mentioned, some of pieces in the earlier episodes are pretty questionable and Yamamoto's score was easily was made in Kai in mind. Plagiarized or not, I still enjoy his music from Kai and his other works.

Don't we all? Granted, I'm hearing a bunch of cool Japanese Movie tunes that I never have before due to their avoiding mono pieces, but it's one of the thing's justifying Kai's existence, frankly.

Re: I Miss Yamamoto
After Episodes 96 and 97 were aired on TV, Nagasaki had nothing to do with the music placement for the replacement score. He left Kai to work on some midnight anime.TheBlackPaladin wrote:But damn you, Nagasaki...
So mondo lame.
Re: I Miss Yamamoto
Nagasaki still did some episodes after that. At least I know that episode 81 was done by him.GotenDaisuki wrote:After Episodes 96 and 97 were aired on TV, Nagasaki had nothing to do with the music placement for the replacement score. In my opinion, Kenji's soundtrack worked well for the updated look and feel of Kai.
Kikuchi's music however, to me personally, does not fit the series. It worked well for Z in it's era but is terribly dated. Plus, the mixing has me scratching my head at times wondering why certain pieces were used instead of others which better fit the scene/s in question. It may be because of the stereo/mono issue but it's still something to question about regardless.
Mind you though, Kenji isn't perfect with his 100% of his placements either but overall his score was great, plagiarized or not.

This. The updated soundtrack was really instrumental in making the series feel fresh and not JUST regular Z. Without it, it feels kind of strange. I love Kikuchi's score and always will, and it remains some of the best orchestral anime music ever. But I feel that Kai was made with Yamamoto's new score in mind, so I really will miss it.BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:Don't we all? I miss his music too. It made Kai unique, in a sense. Granted, Kikuchi's score for Z was amazing, and I'd never replace it, but for Kai it was just, meh. Without Yamamoto for Kai, it makes the series less new. Yamamoto made Kai feel like it was more modern and less of a plain old remake.

Re: I Miss Yamamoto
I remember saying this a long time ago, but once I started watching Dragon Ball Z Kai Blu-rays, I really liked it a lot, despite the BGM selection being so limited.
I'm a fan of Kikuchi's music, so it's normal I prefer him over Yamamoto, heck, I would not mind to see Dragon Ball Z Kai alternatively with Shuki Levy's music.
Shuki Levy did an awesome job with DBZ's Ocean Dub, as for Faulconer.. meh, I rather not comment.
