I doubt the majority of people buying the sets even remember that scene. They probably remember the Freeza fight, but I doubt they remember the details.TheBlackPaladin wrote:Well, we'll know later today, so I could be totally wrong. I'm going to make a prediction that it's the "Hope of the Universe" speech, though. As much as I can't stand that speech, the audience that FUNimation is after LOVES that speech with a burning passion. I think it would be appropriate, too. I can't think of any other moment in the DBZ dub that was as blatantly re-written as that one with the intention of appealing to a different fanbase.

So it's Over 9000 was Number One...yeah.

Seriously?
I have to be honest, I never really understood how or why that meme became so popular.

Re: Funimation's Top 10 Dragon Ball Z Moments
wow. Just wow.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I like how they shy away from discussing what actually made it a meme in the first place: Brian Drummond's over-the-top delivery. Because, you know, it's not on the set.

I think this list has proven that Kajetokun is a god among men.
Let's check out the rest of his work, why don't we;

Dormammu vs Wesker is awesome.
...
Sorry, can't take this seriously. That and Kajet himself seems to be the criminally underrated part of the Over 9000 equation anyway. Wonder how many people who spam it at cons have watched the rest of is stuff.

Yeah, that guy is truly a genius. How many other people could've possible thought of the brilliant idea of taking an example of hammy acting from some shitty dub and uploading it on the internet?BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:That and Kajet himself seems to be the criminally underrated part of the Over 9000 equation anyway. Re: Funimation's Top 10 Dragon Ball Z Moments
Gohan SSJ2 gets the 4th place? Really?
It was one of the most epic moments on Dragon Ball Z, that is, with the original insert song (Unmei No Hi ~ Tamashii Vs. Tamashii).
Because FUNimation's Z Gohan had such a hoarse voice that made him detestable, plus Freeza's granny voice. Thank god FUNimation fixed this on Dragon Ball Kai.
Gohan SSJ2 Z: JPN > Ocean Dub > FUNi Dub
Dragon Ball Z Kai episode 92 where Gohan Turns SSJ2 will probably air 27th/30th November or early December. I'll also be using Gohan's SSJ2 Eng dub Z Kai for a comparison with the Japanese Kai versions (Kikuchi / Yamamoto).

It's kinda funny how you seem to always try to downplay how many people like and remember certain aspects of the dub. Even people who I know haven't watched the show in years remember that speech and the line at the end. It's kind of an iconic moment in the US fandom.AgitoZ wrote:I doubt the majority of people buying the sets even remember that scene. Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Re: Funimation's Top 10 Dragon Ball Z Moments
The "hope of the universe" sure encapsulates the (wrong) attitude Funimation had about DBZ. It truly is a mindbendingly awful moment.
It's funny that they thought a guy who thought space was dark because it was nighttime there would suddenly believe himself to be the hope of the entire universe. Goku doesn't know what the universe is.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Re: Funimation's Top 10 Dragon Ball Z Moments
It's kinda funny how you always seem to bring that up as if it speaks for all of the audience of DBZ. Even if you know people around you who do know these things (I still doubt even they remember the line word for word), does not mean that's true everywhere or for the majority of people.jjgp1112 wrote:It's kinda funny how you seem to always try to downplay how many people like and remember certain aspects of the dub. Indeed... I was "faithful" merely because I had limited internet access and I had no other option. Once the DVD's were released, I never looked back.KiddoCabbusses wrote:Very few Toonami faithfuls even had a chance to see that specific episode, either Ocean-dub or UUE.

"OVER 9000!"? How? Why? What? No one gave two shits about that scene until that Youtube poop that came a decade after the episode's initial airing.
It's just a generic power-up scene with a terrible translation mistake!
