Basically, it's supposed to be a substitute for his Super Perfect Form, which the first Budokai game lacked.

It's basically the equivalent to Super Trunks.

I loved Budokai 1 when it first came out. It was THE game to own for me and my friends, who were all big on DBZ.
When Budokai 2 was out, and my friend said he got it, we shot through the damn ceiling with fanboyish glee. Played it non-stop.
The game is very dated, but what it holds over any DBZ that came after, for me, is the story mode cutscenes. I dont care what anyone says, these cutscenes are just wonderful. I just love them.
I want THAT in future DBZ games. Not this lazy "two characters flap their gums for 3 mins while standing still as the camera pans back and forth" crap.

Yeah I would love another game with a story mode similar to Budokai 1. The closet that we got to was the cut scenes in IW which didn't do very well when it came to reviews and sales.

I liked the old title cards that played before each battle in story mode. Gave off the feeling that this was a real episode in DBZ to me.

If something is truly perfect, that's IT! The bottom line becomes there is no room for imagination! No space for intelligence or ability or improvement! Do you understand? I first played it during the Budokai 3 era. Budokai 1 felt clunky to me. I guess because I wasn't those who played it when it was new and all I do not have any nostalgic feelings for it.

Burst Limit had some nice Cut-scenes too; the problem was there weren't very many scenes. I can't stand this rush everything with dialog boxes and chapter skips.

Mix that with the opening cinematic changing(properly) with each saga...it was basically playing the damn show. It was so much fun at the time.

The Gamecube version has enchanted shadow and shading effects to the graphics:

Oh, that's pretty cool. I'm really liking that.
SparkyPantsMcGee wrote:Oh yeah, I forgot to add, I still favor the alternative costumes in Budokai 1 over any other game. Come on, Super Saiyan Vegeta in a Leather Jacket...badass!
This, too. Some of the costumes where generic, like Cell's alt costume just being blue. But then you had the really creative ones, like Ginyu with Goku's gi and the Nyoibō, Teen Gohan wearing his school outfit, Goku wearing the jacket I think he wore during the Cell Games filler, and Zarbon wearing a nice jacket and dress pants, and even 17 wearing the jacket and pants he wore when donating to the Genki Dama at the end of Z!

If you don't know, one of the bonus characters was Great Saiyaman. It was like getting a sneak peak at the Buu saga before it aired in the US.
Actually the Buu saga was airing on US tv at the time and had 15 eps left when it came out, so we saw Saiyaman, but the story ends at Cell to avoid spoilers.

Anyone else find it hard to believe it been almost a decade since Budokai 1 came out? Feels like yesterday when the game came out and I remember first reading about it my issue of Gamepro. Then all of my friends in the 6th grade talk about it and hoping on what the game will be like.

This game was a giant part of my fandom and probably the first major thing to get me into DBZ. I have a hard time talking about it because I literally can't seperate what this game means to me as a whole and my objective analysis. We all know where that path leads, (it involves screeching about lanky legs and green eyes with Goku plush doll in hand) so I won't really attempt to defend it. For my money I won't deny it's dated but I still think it has a lot of charming qualities. I have no problem picking it up nowadays and having a blast. I can totally see why people would look at this game and see something completely different though.

The story mode was terrific- still much better handled than any other DBZ game I've played apart from the Legacy of Goku trilogy.
The gameplay is horribly dated and very flat.
I prefer B2.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.
Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

Does anyone know where on YouTube I can see Budokai 1's Vegeta costume "badass" fighting with it?
Burst Limit was not a very extensive game (I completed the Story Mode / Broli / Burdock within 2 days but could've done in less than 3-5 hours) but the gameplay is fun to play and the costumes are great.
This is one of my favourite:

Burst Limit has to be one of the most visually appealling and stunning DBZ games to date. It could be a bit faster paced though. I'd definitely buy a sequel if it was ever made.
See, a game like this has me wanting a sequel to come out with much improved features and other character's from the Buu saga. I don't feel that for Spike's games these days.

I think Burst Limit would be a lot better off going back to the way the Budokai series handled a lot of things. Previews for alt costumes, having character customization through capsules (but improved like IW), and returning to IW/B3's ki system.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on
my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

I was one of the (un)lucky ones who played Final Bout back in the late 90's. It was a terrible game, so when Budokai 1 came out, I was super excited to play the game. I played it with a few friends and family (who where also DBZ fans) and we generally had a lot of fun with the game.
At the time the graphics didn't bother me as much even though I of knew it could be way better and the gameplay was solid. Nothing amazing though. I remember me and my friends where expecting a Marvel vs. Capcom 2 like fighting game. You know, smash buttons, pull an ultra combo, watch the screen blaze a variety of graphics and colors. Since that obviously didn't happen we all thought the game was alright. Nothing amazing but it was still pretty cool at the time.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 1's music was composed by Kenji Yamamoto?
Regular Wiki nor the Dragon Ball Wiki list the composer's name so I'd like to know. I'd say it is, sounds familiar to his type of music.

Yes, Yamamoto did the music for all the Budokai games.

I think this is the game that made me think Trunks could turn super saiyan 2.. Good game though. It was like the first dragonball game I played.
