Yes - nu med Level 1.1 !
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Corpsecreate: Are you doing this in AVIsynth? Which denoise filter are you using? It seems a little bit heavy, but interesting results none the less.
My favorite movie henchman is Sancho.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Ashura, I did ask him once, because he did something like this. Here's the response:
Hi,
I'm not sure if your familiar with Avisynth but if you are I used:
#Restores 23.976 fps
AssumeTFF()
TFM()
VinVerse
Tdecimate(mode = 1)
#Sharpening
LimitedSharpenFaster(exborder=4, strength=150)
AAA()
#Denoise
MCTemporalDenoise(settings="high")
#Colour Correction
Tweak(sat=1.17)
Then I opened that .avs with TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works and added the filters:
Contour: 100, Wide
Sharpening: 15 (This is the difference between the pic and video, the video has this filter and the pic doesnt)
And that was encoded with x264 with settings:
cabac=1 / ref=1 / deblock=1:1:1 / analyse=0x1:0x131 / me=umh / subme=9 / psy=1 / psy_rd=0.40:0.00 / mixed_ref=0 / me_range=16 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=2 / 8x8dct=0 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / fast_pskip=0 / chroma_qp_offset=-2 / threads=3 / sliced_threads=0 / slices=1 / nr=100 / decimate=1 / interlaced=0 / constrained_intra=0 / bframes=0 / weightp=2 / keyint=240 / keyint_min=23 / scenecut=40 / intra_refresh=0 / rc_lookahead=60 / rc=cbr / mbtree=1 / bitrate=800 / ratetol=1.0 / qcomp=0.60 / qpmin=0 / qpmax=51 / qpstep=4 / vbv_maxrate=800 / vbv_bufsize=786 / nal_hrd=cbr / ip_ratio=1.40 / aq=1:0.60
And it took my computer 6 hours to encode
I think the result is magnificent. The biggest problem is the denoise as it is difficult to remove noise without destroying detail. MCTemporalDenoise does a good job of denoising while keeping most detail, I think the trade-off with these settings is worth it but each to their own I guess.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
The above post was what I did to the dragon Box dvd's. In the screen caps I posted recently I just used:
MCTemporalDenoise(settings="high")
MCTD is sooo good but soul crushingly slow.

A fancy way of saying grain removed.DBZGTKOSDH wrote:What's "Denoised"?

If 1.2 has the 1.3 trailer in it can you upload to youtube please? Or anyone else if they get theirs first. Thanks.falle wrote:My 1.2 was shipped last Thursday, so I'll get it - hopefully - by Tuesday here in Denmark.

I was just watching Dragon Box 6 Trailer from Yu Yu Hakusho Season 2 Disc 3 and it kind of looked like it was in HD, I'm surprised but I supposed it's just an upscale to 1080p?
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:

Nah, the only trailers are for assorted other products. Nothing Dragon Ball related, unfortunately.Craddle wrote:If 1.2 has the 1.3 trailer in it can you upload to youtube please? Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
I think the ideal solution (for me) would be to denoise it at a lower setting, as so to leave some grain but not all of it. Thereby not making it look "flat" while at the same time not looking like there's a sandstorm in front of the screen.Pokewhiz7 wrote:There's no texture, look at the clouds, grass, and the sand especially. So smudgey.
EDIT: Something like this, maybe...?

I think it'll be 2.1 next, not 1.3.Craddle wrote:If 1.2 has the 1.3 trailer in it can you upload to youtube please? Or anyone else if they get theirs first. Thanks.falle wrote:My 1.2 was shipped last Thursday, so I'll get it - hopefully - by Tuesday here in Denmark.
That works pretty well.Puto wrote:I think the ideal solution (for me) would be to denoise it at a lower setting, as so to leave some grain but not all of it. I don't know why I typed 1.3...funrush wrote: I think it'll be 2.1 next, not 1.3.
I meant 2.1.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
For the people who don't like the grain, from what I'm aware of some Blu-Ray players have a grain removal option. TheGreenQuality from YouTube posted a video demonstrating this, until Toei banned his account....

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Do the Blu-rays actually contain so much grain that denoising is necessary?
I thought the Dragon Boxes had a good amount of grain, and the Blu-ray grain doesn't look all that bad from what I've seen (though I haven't seen much; I still need to buy it).

There's nothing wrong with the amount of grain.GotenDaisuki wrote:Do the Blu-rays actually contain so much grain that denoising is necessary?

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
People think Blu-ray is all about making things look brand new, when in reality that's not entirely what it's for. Blu-ray is about making the film look close to the original source as possible. That's exactly what FUNimation did with these Level sets. When you complain about grain, you're also complaining about how the original 16mm film masters look.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
I wasn't complaining.
I was simply asking a question whether or not denoising was necessary. Don't get me wrong, I love grain, but I was just confused about the grain in the Level sets.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
I tend to not mind grain in-motion (I was, after all, raised on old Cartoon Network programming), but I tend to think that stills tend to not look as good with the heavy grain in the pure shots. Light denoising tends to be fine. though.
Grain vs. no-grain aside, it's possible there was simply no texture in those areas to begin with. Heck, the clouds still look flat even -with- all the grain.Pokewhiz7 wrote:There's no texture, look at the clouds, grass, and the sand especially. So smudgey.
Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
I don't think people were referring to you, but the general consensus of what many people believe about Blu-ray or high definition in general. Robert A. Harris said there's a time and place for dnr and this comes from a man that has done countless restorations of classic films. He really knows his stuff.GotenDaisuki wrote:I wasn't complaining.

To see a gist of why DNR is bad, take this (joke) example!

Final Cut didn't do the best job exporting but you can still tell which version is better.
