Neither Hollywood (maybe) selling more movies justifies blocking a website.
Re: STOP SOPA NOW!
Of course not. No one's claiming it does. Literally no one in this thread is supporting piracy.MCDaveG wrote:Which don't justifies uploading Blu-ray rip of Iron Man 2 on the internet.GotenDaisuki wrote:(Freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition).

Yes it does, if said website is offering illegally pirated content.Fox666 wrote:Neither Hollywood (maybe) selling more movies justifies blocking a website.
You guys really have to get over your entitlement mentality.
Re: STOP SOPA NOW!
And I think you should read a little more about SOPA.
Besides, don't be a hypocrite. Based on SOPA standards, a site like Kanzentai that contains scans and AMVs is offering pirated material, and certainly this would be one of the sites SOPA would be aiming at.

Which is rudiculous. Torrents with secured servers distributing whole movies and rips will be unharmed and sites like this banned for stupid things. Which is why I hate to be outside USA and can't join the opressive force against the SOPA.Fox666 wrote:And I think you should read a little more about SOPA.

I think it affects the whole world as internet really puts down the boundaries of states and as english is my primary worldwide language, I'm often visiting and reading sites of American origin and lot of them will be taken down if this thing goes trough.

I know. That's the whole point of the legislation.Fox666 wrote:SOPA standards, a site like Kanzentai that contains scans and AMVs is offering pirated material, and certainly this would be one of the sites SOPA would be aiming at.
See, what a lot of Internet brats don't seem to get is that someone owns all that stuff. Manga scans, anime clips, Japanese songs, it's all copyrighted. The fact of the matter is that you do NOT have the right to do whatever you want with somebody else's property and said owners have EVERY RIGHT to demand that their intellectual property be protected under the law. If you host torrents or scanlations, you breaking the law and deserve to be punished. End of story.
Re: STOP SOPA NOW!
Have you ever heard of "fair use"? You have the right to post partial scans of material or use movie clips, t's granteed by the law. So don't talk about stuff you don't know.

Re: STOP SOPA NOW!
Viacom said Youtube was a site that existed solely to steal other people's intellectual property. If SOPA was around back then and Viacom had their way, Youtube would be gone. And then it would be a lot harder for people to upload personal videos (like clips of police brutality), or all the companies who work with Youtube to promote or stream their works.
Same thing with Crunchyroll, which used to be 100% user uploaded fansubs, and now instead it's 100% legitimate streams partnered with license holders.
Not to mention, as Fox666 said, there are plenty of fair use or harmless reasons to use copyrighted material. And this kind of law wouldn't even give people opportunity to defend themselves (like Youtube) or change their ways (like Crunchyroll).

Did you even read the thread?SJR wrote:You guys really have to get over your entitlement mentality.
Other than what Rachel's already said, there's also the fact that it's blocking and financially crippling whole sites for potentially one infringement, which possibly isn't even the fault of the site (see any site that allows users to upload content). DMCA notices already get stuff that should fall under fair use taken down quite regularly, and these new acts are like a beefed up version of them that can not only block websites in the US, but cut them off financially as well. There's too much room for abuse, it puts too much pressure on new and existing companies to monitor their users, and that's not even going into the problems that tampering with the DNS can lead to. I support the idea of right-holders having ways to protect their property from online theft, but this act, as it's written, will do more harm than good.

I really hope SOPA does not pass or else hilarious vids like this http://youtu.be/LM5TlwlN9KE will get taken down unfortunately.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
Re: STOP SOPA NOW!
Things like that can already be taken down by DMCA notices. And that's just it: DMCA can take down a video, while SOPA can take down a whole website. It's like using a nuke to kill a fly.dbboxkaifan wrote:I really hope SOPA does not pass or else hilarious vids like this http://youtu.be/LM5TlwlN9KE will get taken down unfortunately.

Re: STOP SOPA NOW!
Sorry for the double-post, but there's a website for the new OPEN act, which was crafted as a less stupid alternative to SOPA. There's not much there yet, but it might be a good idea to sign up anyway and show your support.
...Unfortunately, the SOPA lobbyists dismissed it almost immediately, but I guess I can't be surprised. They really want that "push button, destroy website" power.

Re: STOP SOPA NOW!
Seems like SOPA's over and done with for now, at least, so we don't have to worry about it for now.
Holy moly. We did it -- at least for now. The House Judiciary Committee looked certain to vote for the Stop Online Piracy Act today.
Instead, because of the work of so many rank-and-file Internet users, the bill's lead sponsor acknowledged that our concerns are legitimate, and adjourned the committee without holding a vote!
Of course, there's always more to be done. Will you shoot a quick email to Harry Reid to tell him to stop pushing the Senate version of the bill? He's threatening to call a vote in January.
Here's Wired's take on what went down:
The House Judiciary Committee considering whether to send the Stop Online Piracy Act to the House floor abruptly adjourned Friday with no new vote date set – a surprise given that the bill looked certain to pass out of committee today.
It's amazing work: Politicians are, for the first time, having to contend with the Internet as a political force -- and we might actually win.
But now we need to focus attention back on the Senate, where Marjority Leader Harry Reid says the PROTECT IP Act will be the first bill he calls for a vote next year.
So mondo lame.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Re: STOP SOPA NOW!
Let's be realistic. SOPA would have been overturned the second someone challenged it. In fact, I would have offered to represent the first person adversely affected by it free of charge. The Supreme Court doesn't like laws that are vague and/or overbroad. This was both and I would gladly have written and argued the brief that bitch slapped that law on behalf of any non-pirate client.
Re: STOP SOPA NOW!
Welp, the House moved up the hearing to next week. So much for a month-long delay! Hollywood must REALLY want this passed.
