Looking to buy the Dragonball Z Manga Box Set (1-26)!
THREAD TITLE CHANGED
The one I am referring to is this one:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dragon- ... 1421526157
It seems like a regular box set of 26 manga volumes to me. Each manga volume I have seen go anywhere from $3-10. So why the hell would this box set of 26 volumes be over a thousand dollars? It isn't just Barnes and Noble too, It's everywhere I have looked. I have seen it anywhere from $800-1500 new. I was thinking about buying all of the manga for my birthday, but I'm not gonna shell out over $1000 just for some books. Is there anywhere I can get this stuff for cheap or whats the deal?

What the hell o.O http://www.amazon.com/Dragon-Ball-Box-V ... 270&sr=8-1
Last time I checked it was a little over a hundred bucks, did they just stop manufacturing new copies?

What? Last time I checked (which was some time ago) it was a little over a hundred dollars. I have no idea why the price would have risen so much. Then again I did check Amazon. But since then it's risen so much! That is... just not a very good price. Considering we have the Viz-Bigs.

So mondo lame.
Re: Why does the Dragonball Manga Box Set(Vol 1-26) Cost SO
Exactly! A month or two ago I was like oh wow, $100, this seems like a great deal, i'll get it for my birthday (Dec 26th). But now that I checked up on it I couldn't believe how much it increased. Dragonball ones are still cheap, but I can't find a cheap Dragonball Z box set now, and I dunno why.
Re: Why does the Dragonball Manga Box Set(Vol 1-26) Cost SO
You can get it from ebay around $170 dollars, still new. That's where I ordered mine for my christmas present... but it still hasn't arrived >.>

Re: Why does the Dragonball Manga Box Set(Vol 1-26) Cost SO
You can find the DBZ Box for around $200 if you look hard enough.
In 5 minutes of searching, I found 2 sites that claim to have it "in stock"
http://www.animewild.com/product_info.p ... s_id=92882
http://nollybook.com/products-page/teen ... 421526157/
Send them an email and see if it's in stock before ordering though.

Re: Why does the Dragonball Manga Box Set(Vol 1-26) Cost SO
Allow me to take a stab at answering the original question. The Dragonball manga volumes themselves are neither rare nor particularly valuable. A complete set of them, or hell, a complete set of the VizBigs would be sellable at maybe $100.
This particular set is a different story. It's not just a complete set of the manga. It's a prepackaged complete set in a collector's box, one with a fairly limited production run. That accounts for some of the price difference. But not all. To the contrary, we see something very important here in the realm of e-commerce, and this post
There's a PS1-era strategy guide I want (Tales of Destiny 2) and I've been watching eBay for it for a while. In Like New condition, people usually ask about $50 for it. I'm not willing to pay that. I'd pay at most $30 after shipping. Apparently this is a common consensus because when one showed up in that price range, it was snatched up almost immediately by someone back in May or June. But there are copies--perhaps not anymore, as I haven't checked in a while--available from sellers who want $50 for it and the same copy has been advertised in 30-day cycles for over a year. They can't sell it because notwithstanding what it's "worth," they can't collect on it. The exact same situation is happening with the PSP Star Ocean 2 guide, which is "worth" $100, but sells for $40 tops.
So bottom line, it's probably worth more than people are willing to pay for it, but assuming >$1,000 is considered a "fair market value," it's an unrealistic price point for anyone looking to actually sell one.

directly supports my assertion. E-commerce is just the currently popular model, but it's something that would include trade shows and even pawn shops. How much is one of these box sets worth? Probably anywhere from $500-$1,000, depending on condition. How much is anyone realistically willing to pay for it? Around $170. Which makes perfect sense in the context of my first paragraph above roughly pricing complete sets sans box at $100. The extra $70 is the box and the collectible aspect of it. The difference, then, is that while this might be worth that much, people, as a consequence of market forces, simply won't pay that much. So the more academic question becomes whether it truly is worth $500-$1,000 if you can't actually GET that much for it.Saiga wrote:You can get it from ebay around $170 dollars, still new. Is there a regular box set then instead of a collectors edition? Hell, I just want a bundle where I can buy them all at once for cheap, you know? I'm not looking to spend anywhere near $200 for this stuff, $100 sounds pretty reasonable though.

Re: Why does the Dragonball Manga Box Set(Vol 1-26) Cost SO
Speaking of which, of all things Viz Dragon Ball related I'm actually genuinely surprised at how readily available the Viz Daizenshuu 1 still is. When my Borders got it on release, I bought the only one they had and never saw it again, even at other book stores. I expected this thing not to become ridiculously rare and expensive, but at least relatively tough to find nowadays. Either way, it's great that such a great art book can be found easily years after production, but I would've imagined that would've been more valuable than the box set of the umpteenth printings of volumes 17-42 of the manga. Especially when the Vizbigs are out and subjectively better since I'm pretty sure the censoring is no different between the original releases and the Vizbigs (Even my first printing Viz Graphic Novel release from 2000 censors Popo's lips.)

In other words it's either the Collector's Set for all this money or the individual, common singles/Viz-Bigs for a tiny portion of that.
So mondo lame.
Re: Why does the Dragonball Manga Box Set(Vol 1-26) Cost SO
Hah, oh well, that's too bad. Getting them individually ain't terrible, but I wanted to display them in my room in that nice looking box, oh well.

Why not contact this site? It's only $167. That's relatively cheap compare to $1000. lol http://www.animewild.com/product_info.p ... s_id=92882Asura wrote:Hah, oh well, that's too bad. Yeah, it ain't bad, I was looking something a lot closer to the $100-120 range though.

Wouldn't getting the VIZbigs or individual manga add up to about that much anyway though?

Huh, damn, I guess you're right. I was thinking the individual mangas were more like $5 each which would add up to about $130. Guess not.
Re: Why does the Dragonball Manga Box Set(Vol 1-26) Cost SO
Not quite that much. The VizBigs run about $10 each.Saiga wrote:Wouldn't getting the VIZbigs or individual manga add up to about that much anyway though?
The individuals run for under $5 each.

I am glad I got this last year finally after procrastinating for a year (since its release in 2009) to get this. I just checked Amazon.ca and it is $4,153CDN for it USED! That is insane. I had no idea these went out of print recently either. I think I checked a few months ago and they were still in stock.
Re: Why does the Dragonball Manga Box Set(Vol 1-26) Cost SO
Well damn. Ordering from Australia, it's twice as much for both VizBigs and individuals.Craddle wrote:Not quite that much. The VizBigs run about $10 each.Saiga wrote:Wouldn't getting the VIZbigs or individual manga add up to about that much anyway though?

Pretty sure that was before shipping, as well.
