I agree as well. I don't like Yamamuro's style all that much. It looks like the characters are somewhat plastic-like or something.
So mondo lame.

Here's the original (obviously you folks know this):
Image

And here's kind of the same image with Bardock doing the same move except it's a different enemy.

Hopefully I didn't confuse anyone when I said the new style looks gummy , or like GotenDaisuki said, the animation looks plastic.

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

I don't have a lot to say about this. Short special, and I have a rather short list of reactions.

On the whole, I like this a lot more as an animated special than as a manga. Maybe I'm just not big on Ooishi's static drawing style. Maybe it just didn't work spread out over three chapters. But whatever the case, I loathed this as a manga but rather enjoyed it here. Maybe it just needed that bit of animated flair to make it fun.

Ah, yeah. That's basically it. The animation is great. The soundtrack is serviceable. As a whole, it makes a decent companion piece to Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return, and I certainly wouldn't object to seeing a new entry of this sort every couple of years or so.

I will, however, echo others here in that I'm not huge on the art style and I'm still not inclined to work this into any sort of series canon. But it's decent fun.

I don't mind shining skin, but what bugs me the most is that bloated wide face. Rounded shapes, big nose, and planar eyes are not for me. They don't look serious.

Even hair looks bad! The shiny skin is just weird. Why would they have shiny skin in the first place? Frieza must have handed lotion to all his people and told them to rub it all over. Either that or oil.

While I don't mind Yamamuro's style I would like for the other supervisors at Toei to get a shot at supervising again. Tate Naoki, who was a key animator on Dragon Ball Z and One Piece would make an interesting supervisor, espicially considering his work on One Piece. Stylistically, I think Tate would've made a great animation supervisor and key animator for this special, actually. His work on the Nico Robin side story during the time the Straw Hats were separate was quite moody and I think it'd look nice in the Dragon Ball world.

Ultimately, visually, I think that was my biggest grief with the special. Still, Oonishi Ryou, Ide Takeo, and Shimanuki Mashiro did good work here.

The wide faces, the plastic shiny look...yeah I'm one of the people that was happy wasn't reanimated from scratch with their new style.

I've seen that Toei has been using a type of experimental animation style lately. I'm not sure if there is a proper term for it , but people who have seen Mononoke (Ayakashi spin off) and Kyousogiga, know what I'm talking about. It's not exactly my favorite style, but done correctly, it can have some fanatastic fight scenes. I think there were even w few One Piece episodes done with this style and a movie or two (6 and 9 ?)
I wouldn't mind seeing a DB special done like this.

I really don't like the new animation style. It's very bubbly and shiny, which doesn't sit well with me at all. Although, the part where Bardock beat the living hell out of Chilled completely made up for it. That was easily the best part of the special.

I think I would have loved it more if I hadn't already read the manga and if him turning ssj was a total surprise to me. Like by chance seeing it on tv as a kid for the first time.

I can't not love the addition of Chilled though, it being a new member of the Frieza race designed by Akira Toriyama himself!

Same here.

Although I didn't like the artwork/animation a great deal I really liked it! Thought it was fun & I was always wanting to see some sort of extension on the Bardock T.V Special & now It's finally here! I would love to see more of the past brought up in DB, even something as boring as life on Planet Vegeta before Frieza arrives. haha

I definitely agree with you guys. As 2008 Special was kinda cool fresh thing and I enjoyed it a lot, it was later adapted to manga in some shorter version. I was like, Okay, liked the feature, manga is cool, I don't care about it much.

Now with Bardock it was: ''I don't like Ooshi's art, cool idea, bad execution''. As I hoped that the anime version will add more to the story, or some easter egg at least..... It was same as the manga, only thing I liked about it was the enhanced SSJ transformation scene. My reaction was: Hmmmmm, okay, it exists......

One thing I noticed when listened in headphones, don't you think that the sound mix of the actors' voices have some weird effect on it or is mastered wrong?
All the voices comes out with weird reverb like talking in some concrete tube.

I noticed that too. At first I thought it was intentional since the first scene I really noticed it on was when Bardock was in the cave. I figured it was like an echo effect, but then I started hearing it in places that shouldn't have an echo.

I was actually going to disagree with you and assume it was just angles, but I always have to be thorough.

So, I watched it again frame by frame and it seems you are correct. This image is taken a few frames later and it appears to be corrected.

Although, you still see that one strand of hair on correct side, the angle of his hair at the top image seems to be off. It's really hard to tell without being able to see all of his hair. I guess we can just chalk this up to the different artist styles.

I was wondering who the planet's inhabitants are supposed to be? Redesigned Tsufurus? A new in indigenous population to Planet Plant? No information regarding these folks?
