Shin Budokai or Another Road, which is better? (PSP)

Post by MCDaveG » Tue Dec 27, 2011 1:40 am

Hello guys, hope you had cool holidays.
Among the countless of presents, I got an PSP from my GF and some games onto it.
So I noticed that there is Budokai on PSP, awesome!!
Well, I wanted to ask, which one of the two is better. Yeah, Another Road have more characters and I kinda don't like how in the first, from all the Buu's there is only Kid Buu.
I also heard something about unique story mode in the Another Road. What do you think? I can't find any good info.
Is there classic story mode in the first one and original in the second, or how is it? And how are these games from the look of playability.
Thank you very much!!

Edit: Or Tenkaichi Tag Team?
FighterZ, Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat: Funky_Strudel
PS5: Dynamixx88

I will say this much, Another Road may have an original story, but it really, REALLY sucks. The basic plot, "Majin Buu in Trunks timeline" isn't a bad idea, it seems to be a fairly big subject in the fandom, but they picked the characters they wanted in the game and then wrote the plot to fit them all in...and it is just ridiculously stupid. The first game kind of suffers from that, but its is a bit more excusable since it was an expanded version of Movie 12.
Direct translations of the Korean DB Online timeline and guidebook.
My personal "canon" and BP list. (Coming Soon)

Gameplay-wise, Shin Budokai 2 is a beam-struggle away from being a perfect Budokai game (opinions, y'all).
Story wise, it's bad, and should feel bad. Download the complete save data, and it's better than the original, play them both all the way through, and it' 50/50... maybe the original edges it (yes, the story mode is just that bad).

Hmmm..... Looks like I'll go for Tag Team. I've just wanted to have the Budokai on Sony system in my pocket :(

If it means anything to you, Shin Budokai 2 has an arcade mode to keep you going even when you've got all the characters.
I think you should give it a try, if you just want Budokai in your pocket, you'll love it.... Just download the complete data. :)

Story wise, I liked them both. But for gameplay, I would say Another Road. It has improved Shin Budokai's gameplay and has more characters.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

My vote is on another road. It's a fun game; the story is a good idea but it falls short(then again it's a portable game so you can't expect to much) but the fighting is solid. It's definitely worth especially since it's really cheap these days. I don't know much about Tag Team outside of the demo so I can't say for sure if it's better than Another Road. I did enjoy the demo though.
...Wait what are you doing? Are you still reading this? I finished what I had to say, why don't you move on to the next post?

I've been wanting to get this game for awhile, seeing as it seems like one of the best Budokai's, however I'm not sure where it's possible to get it...

Wait wait wait, yo girlfriend got you a PSP MCDaveG??? Woahh, lucky guy haha, I'm pretty sure they don't come exactly cheap ; )

I actually all three fairly recently (months ago actually lol), since they were really cheap, so I'll just leave my thoughts on that.

I actually got into the Budokai-style of gameplay with Shin Budokai. Major selling point for me: What-If based on Movie 12. The gameplay was great, a lot of fun, had a fair roster. Story was fun.
Figure i'd try Shin Budokai 2. The changes (or as I'd like to call them, improvements 8) ) felt great and I loved the gameplay.....but the story got REALLY borring...terribly fast. Advice: Get a 100% save to play it all you want

I never bought Tenkaichi Tag Team. I never got over the fact that it didn't have the original voice cast.....but luckily I went to Japan this summer and got Tag Vs (for a lot cheaper than it would've been here). It was okay...Not very good, not great...just okay. The 2v2 gameplay is interesting at times...but I found myself wanting to fight just 1v1 a lot...but when I did it felt a bit lacking. It's a fun 'on the go' mindless punching fun, but not so much as a 'sitting down with my try-hard pants at home' fun. The story works.

All 3 of them are a safe bet depending on what you feel like playing, but they all have something good to offer

I own all 4 of the PSP titles, and I'd recommend Another Road (yes, the story mode is bad), and TTT. Evolution's fun for the novelty of it all, and it actually has a bunch of art and story boards from the film.

Yeah, striked me too as I torn off the paper :D But we are video game freaks, I bought Nintendo Wii for my little brothers

Based on your opinions, I'll give a shot to Another Road. Thanks a lot!!!
Well, Tag Team looks like Spike's old song, so it's only + is the 2 vs 2 gameplay....... hmmm, without the originally cast, it will probably piss me off :D

I´ve never played the game from the movie but I was kinda curious so I looked for videos.
It seems fairly superior to the movie itself.

Shin budokai 2 was a great starting point if dimps ever comes back.

Hello folks! So my copy of Shin Budokai 2 (as I learned, is Another Road with different artwork only in US) arrived this week.
Playing it heavily and I really like it. Well, it won't be fun if I had downloaded the save data, but it's true that the Story sucks.
Well, the beginning was great, Trunks on Tenkaichi Budokai and bringing the guys from our era after they defeated Buu to this one, altough, reversed from the Androids case, every villain is somehow stronger here.
Well, after Vegeta becoming Majin, it got bad. This was the first ill dumb thing in the story (not mentioning most of the dialogues). Triliards of Coolers on Namek were overkill and the most boring part.
Als, as some of you mentioned, the plan to include all characters from the roster in the story was damn bad idea.......
Crazy Gohan from future fighting 18 in his dreams????? Not to mention the worst possible decision was Bardock, but not that bad as Freeza, Cell, Cooler and OMFG Brolli.
Didn't understood the mechanics fully yet. I can do basic skills + ki blasts. Thanks to this, lot of my hard battles consist of spamming the strongest ki attacks and the manual don't explaing anything you already don't know. So it's handy for winter evenings on bathroom.
I must look it up on the internet, as I can turn the special gauge on sometimes (if it's L, R? It's broken somewhat) and I can turn SSJ and other transformations only in story mode when I have selected for example SSJ2 Goku into the play and as enemy knocks me out of SSJ2 to base, I can turn only SSJ2 after my ki gauge is full, no other transformations and I can't do it in practice mode from base.....
