Dragon Ball SD Chapter 5 (1st Monthly)

Post by TheDevilsCorpse » Tue Dec 27, 2011 3:13 am

I was pretty sure this chapter would follow the trend set by the first four, and I was right, it does for the most part. It tells the same basic story, starting back at the first chapter, with slightly altered events. It does seem that Ooishi will be taking advantage of the original series being finished to crack some jokes that weren't possible during the original run...

Without spoiling the specifics of the references, for those who might still be willing to check out the chapter, I will say that we get to see Vegeta, Nappa and Raditz briefly, as well as adult SS Goku and Elder Kaioshin...

I'm not a fan of the previous chapters of SD, but I enjoyed this chapter quite a lot. Loved the references to the later parts of the series.

I... didn't hate it. I actually smiled at some of the jokes (Especially the one about Goku being a perv). I was also pleasantly surprised that some of the story elements were slightly changed here. I thought that Ooishi Naho was going to follow the original story beat by beat which would have been extremely boring. But my biggest gripe is that all the funny perverted jokes that were in the original series didn't make the cut. I don't think Master Roshi tried to hit on Bulma once.

It was much better than the other SD chapters. I really like the fact that it's not only a condensed Dragonball now.

I laughed when the Vegeta part happened.
But yeah, it was better than the others. Not perfect, but better. :D

Turned out better than what I thought it would be.

(Note: Did anyone see the error when Goku was fighting the robot?)

Wow, I really enjoyed that! So wait, is Ooishi starting from scratch, and doing what she should've done 5 volumes ago?
If so, my body is ready for a complete re-telling. The art is great, the jokes are good, and the characters are actually SD.

I thought the changes were welcome and the chapter was enjoyable. Much more enjoyable than Dragon Ball SD Chapter 4. I also liked the little cracks she put in referencing the original series.

Just read chapter 5... and... it was actualy very good! Not very rushed like the others.

Wow, 20 pages...I believe this is longer than an actual Dragon ball chapter

Still not crazy about it, but it's...cute, in it's own way, which I think is the point.

Though I'm really curious why the sudden interest in re-launching DB? To create a new generation for the merchandise, because the old one is to old? Am I reading too much into this?

They are doing this by 2002, with Kanzenban, Dragon Box, DBZ video games, new merchadise, Dragon Ball Kai, and now Dragon Ball SD.

The robot switched arms. When it appeared, it had the claws for the left arm and the cannon for the right. The next page, they got reversed.

That was better than I was expecting. I liked how Ooishi is calling on later events from the main story to point out how things began to contradict the early stories.

I wish SD would take some chances and not follow the original series as closely, but having said that, I really enjoyed the small changes like the references to Bulma and Vegeta hooking up and Goku eventually using adult persuasions to win over Elder Kaio-shin. :)

Anyone else notice that SD corrected Toriyama's mistake (as mentioned in the Ask Me Anything Corner) when Goku met Bulma? Originally Goku said "I've never met another human before!" to which a fan wrote Toriyama and asked how that could be true because he had lived with his Grandpa Gohan. I recall Toriyama saying something like "heh... I guess you caught me/got me there." But in SD Goku said "You're the first human I've seen other than my Grandpa." I thought that was really cool too.

Yeah, I noticed it because yesterday I reread volumes 1-16 (got the box set) and noticed both how strange that line was and the question in the "Ask me Anything" corner. So it's neat to see it fixed in SD.

I liked it, Bulma looks adorable. While I was irked that most of the embarrassment that Toriyama put Bulma through (Goku stripping her, the bathing scenes, her bladder getting the best of her in chapter 1...), it made sense that Ooishi would skim over some of it, and worked around her creative changes to make for some clever bits. Looking forward to more, hoping it follows a somewhat linear path now.

That was freakin' hilarious. Loved the various "flash forward" jokes, especially the one with Goku and the Elder Kaioshin.
