Need help with Dragon Ball season sets

Post by CyberpunkCentral » Mon Dec 05, 2011 12:42 am

Been holding off on buying this ever since it was first announced. I don't want to wait another 2 years to complete the series if FUNimation releases a Dragon Box or Blu-ray version for this. But since the price for these season sets have gone way down, I'm re-considering on buying them. So can anyone tell me the pros and cons about the Dragon Ball season sets? You know like picture quality, audio, whatever.

The only cons I see are the picture being zoomed in just a bit, no Japanese title cards, no NEPs, and incorrect openings/endings.
So mondo lame.

On the other side of the spectrum, the "Saga" sets have their fair share of poor encodes like most of FUNi's early-2000s DVDs and supposedly one episode of the Uranai Baba arc contains only dubtitles and not translated subtitles, though that's just hearsay and I don't know for sure. Overall you can't go wrong with either, but for the price you can't argue with the season sets, even if the zoom-ins are pretty bad.

At $12-ish per volume on Amazon, they're worth it and they're not so expensive as to detour you from the eventual Blu-ray release.

Don't the Blue Bricks have a very small amount of grain removal?

Yes, this is true.

Also episode 81 of Goku's solo training for the 22nd Budokai has a bug. If you watch the episoded in Japanese after the eye-catches it skips to the second half of episode 83. To stop this you have to put the episode in English which will strangely let the episode play in it's full and then after the eye-catches put it back into Japanese.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

Those are all glitches on the Madman release of those episodes. I don't recall any of those problems being present in the original FUNimation release.

I'm not buying it because a lot of the original picture was cut out from zooming. I don't support stuff like that so I'm waiting for either a Dragon Box or a blu-ray release.
- Been a Dragon Ball fan ever since 1995 (at the time, I was 7 years old).
- I prefer Saffron Henderson's Kid Gohan and Kid Goku over Stephanie Nadolny's.
- I still hope for a redub of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z with FUNimation's current cast.
- I prefer to watch Dragon Ball Z with the Faulconer Score, however I do not mind the original Japanese score.

It never looks awkward because, even though you lose a similar amount to the orange bricks, the frame composition is still good.

The blue bricks have brighter colors than the earlier sets, and likewise the Dragon Boxes. The reds in particular were increased. It doesn't bother me, but it has upset some people. The framing is also tolerable; save for things positioned below the two thirds line, most of the image's content is displayed. And regardless it could be awhile before we see a Blu-Ray release, and I doubt a Dragon Box for the series will ever come out.

I do like the colors presented in the Blue Bricks but I'm still not fond of the image loss in those sets.

Trust me, it's not that bad. It never looked cramped to me.
