DBZ feels better when watching it with someone, doesn't it?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

The term you are looking for, to define GT (and the movies) is "Non-canon".

GT, the Movies, and the Fillers are all Non-canon

The Fillers are their own entity, separate from GT and the Movies.
GT is canon, at least canon in the anime version anyway. There are tow canons: The anime canon (which includes DB-GT w/all your fillers and whatnot) and the manga canon ( :P I think the title explains it all.)
Not all filler works within the anime's canon (ex: Dr Frappe). GT also doesn't follow the anime's canon as it should, a funny thing since all it has to do is follow where Z left off, which is why a lot of people don't even include GT as anime-canon and mis-label it as "filler."

Let's pretend GT takes place in the 4th timeline. :P

Well, I agree whole-heartidly with Chaos on the "canon" aspect. But really, it's all a matter of personal points of views. My point of view of the anime canon time-line, and how I prefer to watch the canon anime trilogy is basically:

Bardock Special.
Original DragonBall series.
DBZ Movie 1.
Saiyan - Garlic Jr. sagas.
Trunks Special.
Trunks saga - The driving school episode (just before the blink of the 3 years).
DBZ Movie 5.
(Beginning right at the 3 year blink in the driving school episode) Android - Cell Games sagas.
DBZ Movie 9.
Great Saiyaman - Kid Buu sagas.
DBZ Movie 13.
Last 3 DBZ episodes.
DragonBall GT series (culminating to when Goku disappears with Shenron).
Goku Jr. Special.
Last 8 minutes of GT episode 64.

Yeah, it might seem like a hectic way to view/watch the series, but that's just personal preference and my point of view on the anime canon.

I think watching the Bardock Special before Dragonball is a massive spoiler, I'd watch it after Freeza makes his first appearance in the anime. Plus, I haven't even watched Dragonball, I've seen the Pilaf saga in Japanese but nothing after that, expect for the Tai Pai Pai ones before Karin's tower episode and after he comes down too.
