Episode 96 Got Reedited after the Earthquake?
Episode 96 Got Reedited after the Earthquake?
I've been stuck with this idea since I saw episode 96 first. There are some odd features in the episode:
1) The recap is too long.
2) There is no narration in the recap.
3) Characters other than Cell and Z warriors do not appear during the fight at all.
As you can see, the recap lasts over two minutes, without any narration. It's even as long as those of Z! Recaps in Kai normally last less than/about a minute, and they all have Yanami's narrations, so it obviously is unusual. In addition, strangely, Mr Satan, his pupils, the cameraman, the reporter, Gyumao, and Chichi almost do not appear in the episode at all. You know, when they appear during the kamehameha battle, the ground is always shaking and they're crouching out of fear, which can easily evoke the earth quake that occurred in Japan just nine days ago. This may explain why Gyumao and Chichi know that Gohan defeated Cell: Uranai Baba must have appeared in episode 96 before the reediting. So my guess is that they practically edited out all the scenes that can be related with the earthquake immediately after it happened, and filled the lacking time with the quickie long recap.
Do you have any supporting/refutative ideas about this?

Re: Episode 96 Got Reedited after the Earthquake?
I always assumed the long, narrator-less recap was intentional.
Re: Episode 96 Got Reedited after the Earthquake?
Chichi and Gyuumao can even be seen celebrating in episode 96 itself... so I guess something was cut there...
Also Picccolo and the rest were never blown away during the episode... probably because the scene were that happens comes with a lot of earthquakes too...
Some might argue that the scenes were cut because they weren't manga canon, but the scenes were the earthquakes reach cities and they start to collapse are in the manga.

One game for PS3 was cancelled, it was adventure game set in Japan after earthquake, so i can see that would be reason for editing that episode

I thought ep 96 was one of the best constructed episodes of Kai, so whether they had to hurry or not didn't affect it's quality.

Considering the way the scene cuts to another scene in the Kai version, it really seems something is edited out there.

Re: Episode 96 Got Reedited after the Earthquake?
It does seem like they did edit to stop people from thinking about the earthquake. The only other explanation I can think of is that they edited it for whatever reason. Remember these are the same people who removed Piccolo, Gohan and Krillin's BP reading but kept Ginyu Bulma. Also maybe the narrator couldn't do his lines for some reason.
Also I think there was a One Piece game trailer that caused a bit of trouble.coola wrote:One game for PS3 was cancelled, it was adventure game set in Japan after earthquake, so i can see that would be reason for editing that episode

I remember reading somewhere that they ordered to destroy every single copy of a DS game in every store, because it included an One Piece trailer, where someone had the power to cause earthquakes and tsunamis. (Whitebeard I think he was called? I don't watch OP...

I highly doubt they would destroy a game because of Whitebeard's earthquake powers. IIRC, I read it in SaiyanIsland.com. It's a good site, I doubt they lied.

Destroying promotional DVDs and games are two very different extremes.DBZGTKOSDH wrote:Oh it was DVDs after all... That's what I was reffering about.

Re: Episode 96 Got Reedited after the Earthquake?
Maybe so, but it still doesn't make sense. Why destroy promotional dvds? It doesn't change the fact that said powers would also be in the Game, in the Anime, and in the manga. Might as well destroy all copies that have instances of that in them...oh wait, that's stupid. Doing so would be stupid, just as doing so to the promotional dvds is both stupid, and entirely pointless. The offending material will continue to exist regardless of what they do.AgitoZ wrote:Destroying promotional DVDs and games are two very different extremes.DBZGTKOSDH wrote:Oh it was DVDs after all... Re: Episode 96 Got Reedited after the Earthquake?
If I had to guess were the episode was edited (if it was) , I would say at the following points:
Just before Cell says "Whats wrong Gohan? Show me your final stand!". In the manga and Z there was a scene there that showed the announcer commenting on the earthquakes and people in cities wondering why the earth is starting to shake (Z also added some filler where Uranai Baba visits Gyumao and Chichi, the latter of which is complaining about earthquakes)
After Gohan and Cell's beams collide, it immediately cuts to a shot of Dende. The manga and Z had a scene there were the beam collision got bigger ,starts breaking up the ground and blows the Z-warriors, Mr. Satan and company away. After this the nearby cities are shown with people running away from collapsing buildings. A shot of this scene was present in the preview that came with episode 95, but wasn't present in the episode(probably the closest thing to actual proof that the episode was edited)
The last part that seems to be edited is the part were the Z-warriors were blasting Cell from behind and it immediately cuts to Dende again. Originally Z featured a scene here were the Z-warriors were blown away, and slowly after the earth around the beam collision starts breaking up.

Re: Episode 96 Got Reedited after the Earthquake?
Sorry for bumping up an old thread, but surprisingly, I got a reply about this from one of the staff members. It confirms that they actually edited episode 96 with consideration for the victims of the earthquake. I can't say anything further than that for the sake of confidentiality, though.

Wow, that's really interesting. It makes sense, though, espicially if somebody was also overseeing the replacement of music.

Hmm, I remember Cartoon Network pulling something similar back in 2001. They skipped over an episode that had Great SaiyaMan rescue some people from a burning sky scraper. They didn't actually edit the episode but, it's all in the same vain.kei17 wrote:Sorry for bumping up an old thread, but surprisingly, I got a reply about this from one of the staff members.
