Controversial versions are the Ocean/Westwood Dub which is the only dub besides the Funimation dub to use different music. The Funi dub for obvious reasons and the Japanese version because of Kai and Toei and a lot of thing that would take me 100 years to complete listing.AgitoZ wrote:Again, have you looked at the lyrics? Hell, it's that same anger that leads to more people dying.

I heard that there had been a mixed reception for the transformation scene even in Japan during the original run. I read a post on 2ch saying some people were bitching about the song and the flying bird in letters columns in anime magazines.

Re: The controversy about Gohan Angers and Spirit vs Spirit
Kinda is when there are only 2 versions of DBZ that stick out like a sore thumb. Even the Euro-Portuguese version kept the music and that dub weren't any better then either Ocean or Funi(No offence BTW) In fact people from Brazil bash the Euro-Portuguese version just for the sake that their Portuguese dub was better(That Brazilian dub was one of the best dubs for the record.) Also the German version somewhat changed the soundtrack, but also kept the real score as well so I don't really count the German dub as changing the music.Rukura wrote:That is the complete version of the theme. Re: The controversy about Gohan Angers and Spirit vs Spirit
Though I don't agree with them, I still understand why they didn't like the use of the insert song. Playing insert songs feels sort of kid-friendly like Disney cartoons, and does not perfectly go well with the serious atmosphere in Z. I also do remember seeing many Japanese DB fans bitching about insert songs in Kai. They were arguing that such songs made the show seem to be aimed at young children (I think it really was, anyway.)jpdbzrulz4sure wrote:Well, can't please everyone, I suppose.

Re: The controversy about Gohan Angers and Spirit vs Spirit
The Japanese DBZ version of Gohan becoming SSJ2 is and will always be my favorite scene.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I don't understand this ignorant notion that Spirit vs. Spirit is pure sounding or sounds like a generic J-pop song. I agree with what VegettoEX said, it does embody shonen determination. If you actually looked at the lyrics, you would realize how dark this song is. Just because it has a beat and it has vocals doesn't mean it's some generic J-pop song.

Spirit vs Spirit was perfect for the scene. "Final Boss, Villain has gotten away with too much, I'm scared as hell, and I won't stand for it" - or something along those lines, I haven't heard the lyrics in a while. I forget where Gohan Angers was actually used, but it sounds much more like something to play when the Z Fighters realized that he had momentarily become a mini-Vegeta.

Frankly, those YouTube Brazilian DBZ tryhards bitch about everything, if they don't like the Portuguese Portugal version don't bother watching, hearing or commenting.UnbiasedDBZfan wrote:In fact people from Brazil bash the Euro-Portuguese version just for the sake that their Portuguese dub was better.
Hell, they bring out crap that doesn't even relate to Dragon Ball Z like:
"erm, our portuguese is better then yours"
"our women is better then yours"
"u suck ma dick"
"this dub is such a fail kkkkkkkkkkkkkk"
"dragon ball z z z a energia kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk"
"u suck foar slevering ouar countreh"
Eh, retarded shit like I said. And talk about the Japanese overusing the letter "k".

Yes the Brazilian Portuguese dub is better than the Portuguese Portugal dub but still inferior to the original Japanese.
I remember watching a BR DBZ Dub episode where they called Trunks as "Trenks".

A lot of those flaws on the Portuguese Portugal DBZ dub are thanks to the French version (AB Groupe), but for nostalgic reasons a lot of fans despise the mistakes.
YouTube comments and the logic they've got...

I've taken a look at the lyrics, and honestly, it's not that dark. It mentions "a bloodthirsty beast", but even that's only in reference to how much Gohan's going to open up a can of smackdown on Cell's rear.
I guess I can get the argument that it represents Gohan's rage though, so if you want to say that it fits...I guess I can't really argue with you, but I still think the melody itself sounds too upbeat. If the point is "hopeful sadness", then I think something like this...

... better represents the rage and sadness Gohan is feeling while giving it a tinge of hopefulness at the same, especially towards the end. But then, I'm a bit of a sucker for guitars, admittedly, so take this as you will.

The only thing that's pisses me off about struggle of sadness is the fact on all YT videos i've heard, you can hear the footsteps. In fact, I don't think i've come across a struggle of sadness "theme on youtube that didn't have the footsteps at all .
Bah, looks like I'll need to create a rip myself.(without the footsteps)

Edit: What I plan on doing is getting the YYH blu-ray's. Since the YYH Blu-Ray's have 5.1 audio, then it's a matter of cutting parts that dont contain Sfx. And combining them with others that don't contain Sfx. Voices/Voice distortions wont be much of an issue, as the voices are on a completely different track.

Personally, I think Heroic Face-Off works well for Gohan's SSj2 scene.
