Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
Hey! I have a question. The only reason that we have 17 episodes per level. Is that because the more episodes you add onto a disc you loose a bit more quality? or is Funimation just dragging this out? Hopefully someone can shed some light on that for me.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

The more episodes you add to a disc, the less space you have, so you have to compress the episodes more. The more you compress them, the worse they look. Why it's seventeen a set, I don't know.samuraix123 wrote:Hey! I have a question. The only reason that we have 17 episodes per level. Time and money. It takes time to remaster the episodes and they need to make money back so they release it in one line and then a second line. Assuming the Level line isn't canceled mid-release we'll see a second line of releases that combine the four of the old discs in new packaging.Pokewhiz7 wrote:Why it's seventeen a set, I don't know.

That's mainly why I'm actually kinda worried about waiting for a rerelease, and might just buy the half-level sets that are coming out.JulieYBM wrote:Time and money. Why I hate US anime sites..... don't ask.The work of the cast is also important in keeping the intensity up. Specifically, their ability to scream power-ups and special moves like there's no tomorrow. The Japanese cast isn't half bad at it, but the real masters are Funimation's English actors. No one can sell a Kamehameha Wave like Sean Schemmel or growl an alien-sounding special move like Christopher R. Sabat (who plays so many parts that he has to be good at it). The commitment the actors show to the series' many and lengthy screams of rage and pain and various other manly emotions is very impressive (there are stories of Schemmel passing out during some of them). That its script bears scant resemblance to the original hardly matters, though one does miss the original's macho reserve, crushed here beneath reams of additional dialogue.

Re: FUNimation to put DBZ on Blu-Ray
So, when do you reckon one of those complete levels sets be released/announced? No doubt Funi are considering it/set on doing it, they've done it with multiple other releases (i.e. Kai seasons), but I assume they'd only really be putting it out their towards the end of their current Blu Ray's run, right? Or at least half way through the level's run.Pokewhiz7 wrote:Which is why I'm waiting for complete levels. Anyone know if the Blu-ray is selling well? For some reason I have the feeling it's not and I don't know why lol. But if it's not I hope they don't pull an ultimate uncut with this

You probably think they aren't selling well because Funi has released Dragon Ball 50 million times.

They're already using about half the max bitrate of Blu-Ray as it is, too, so I've read.Pokewhiz7 wrote:The more episodes you add to a disc, the less space you have, so you have to compress the episodes more. At least the Sayain saga re-dub was one of the best acted things in the Funi dub. If you look at the Amazon's best selling anime, the several of the Orange Boxes are up there, as well as the GT Box as a few of the DB Season Boxes (starting at number 21).Android 50 wrote:You probably think they aren't selling well because Funi has released Dragon Ball 50 million times.
I'm betting we'll see remastered versions for BluRay of GT and DB as well in time simply because they have already paid for the HD transfer, now they just need to pay for the proper cleanup. If it is well-received by the fans, they might view this to be a better alternative to bringing over Dragon Box masters for DB and GT.
I'm also assuming as time goes on, Funi is going to want everything on next gen discs, so they'll go ahead and pay for it now and reap the revenues for a good number of years to come.

Actually, as far as we can tell, FUNi only has an HD transfer for Z. The other two series' season set masters are just their old digi-betas with some filtering applied.ect5150 wrote:I'm betting we'll see remastered versions for BluRay of GT and DB as well in time simply because they have already paid for the HD transfer, now they just need to pay for the proper cleanup. I thought the Blue DB Boxes & the Green GT Boxes went through the same process with Steve Franco... did they not?jpdbzrulz4sure wrote:Actually, as far as we can tell, FUNi only has an HD transfer for Z. I think that GT still being interlaced, and the blue sets still having footage that looks like it comes from tapes (after the first half of set one, which looked like film) speak for themselves. They look just like their old footage (which I've read came from digibeta tapes) with some noise reduction and slight zooming.ect5150 wrote:I thought the Blue DB Boxes & the Green GT Boxes went through the same process with Steve Franco... did they not?jpdbzrulz4sure wrote:Actually, as far as we can tell, FUNi only has an HD transfer for Z. They also didn't have Franco work on them, as they started working on the footage in-house (before getting him to work on the Blu-rays) in the middle of the Z season sets.

Yeah, they clearly reused and detelecined their digibeta footage. It's full of cross color artifacts.Metalwario64 wrote:I think that GT still being interlaced, and the blue sets still having footage that looks like it comes from tapes (after the first half of set one, which looked like film) speak for themselves. I wonder why they didn't do the same detelecine process for the GT sets? Those still have frame blending and don't run at 24fps.kei17 wrote:Yeah, they clearly reused and detelecined their digibeta footage. It's full of cross color artifacts.

Considering that the GT sets came out first, perhaps FUNi didn't know how to detelecine digi-betas until sometime after they released them, and prior to releasing DB.Metalwario64 wrote:I wonder why they didn't do the same detelecine process for the GT sets?
