My attempt at Restoring Yamamoto Score to Kai
I'll try to keep this as short as I can to put it simply i'm attempting to restore the original yamamoto Score for the English Dub of DBZ Kai (as much as I like the Kikuchi mix i'd still prefer the original music), I know that there's already another Yamamoto resotration project here: http://daizex.fanboyreview.net/viewtopi ... =6&t=18094 however I noticed a lot of the music used in the other project wasn't very faithful to the original placement of the Japanese Broadcast version (compare the other project's scene of Frieza begging for his life in episode 53 to the original scene and you'll see what I mean). The main goal of my project is to make the official english dub with the Yamamoto score that is as close to the original version as possible I just finished Episode 53 yesterday and I wanted to share with you guys to see what you think enjoy. http://hotfile.com/dl/141224318/6df3a93 ... 2.rar.html
Edit: replaced the link with a newer version that fixes a few placement errors that I found earlier today so if you have the older version I recomend that you replace it with the new one.

If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out.

Re: My attempt at Restoring Yamamoto Score to Kai
I actually downloaded and checked this out. Pretty much spot on placement as advertised. Though, I do have a few bits of advice to share. For one, I think your doing yourself a bit of disservice by having the sound bitrate at 192kpbs. I know the center channel audio is 192, but your sacrificng the quality of the music files, unless they too are at 19. I would advise using the bitrate of whatever your Kai music files are encoded at.
Also, I'm pretty sure you need to lower the center channel audio's volume, cause I think you have it as ripped, and honestly, it's too loud at times. I"ve played around with splicing together center channel and a stero version of the 5.1 tracks, and I've settled around a -6 decrease for the center channel audio, but it's probably best if you played around with it a bit to find the right niche. Besides that, I noticed that Destiny was getting drowned out there at the end when it came to the Namek's background noise. I can hardly hear the track at those points. But I sympathize, and I kinda have developed a very strong dislike for 53 since it's so all over the place sound-wise. I know trying to level the audio correct is a big pain in the ass, beleive me. But despite those things, your music placement was pretty good.
Having said that, I think you exaggerate a bit when you say a lot of my Yamamoto score is different from the original broadcast. Episode 53 was quite more the exception than the rule. I'd say I'm about 80%-90% percent faithful, but yeah, sometimes I extend a track(which accounts for most of the differences) here or there, but it's not really common. The point is to restore his score, but the fact that 100% restoration is impossible due to the 4th soundtrack getting canned, and that the same guy who placed Yamamoto's music is the same guy who's responsible for a crap placement of Kikuchi in Kai(and other's have complained about his Yamamoto placement here in the forums), I can't say if I find a different way to skin a cat that achieves the same results, or offers something even better, then I won't do it. But I consider myself still be pretty faithful to the original intentions. But I think it's pretty cool what your doing. If I could have found someone who was going to do what the both of us are doing now, I most likely wouldn't really have bothered with rescoring Yamamoto myself, much LESS Kikuchi and Faulconer. But fortunately(or unfortunately, I don't know, lol), that didn't happen in the timespan I would have liked.
But hey, the more, the merrier I say.Lol.
Edit* Forgot to mention Yeah Break Care sounded really metallic for some reason.

Re: My attempt at Restoring Yamamoto Score to Kai
Thanks for the advice about keeping the original bitrate as the music my main reason for changing the bitrate in the first place was to make it more faithful to the bitrate of the DVD's but since that seems to be a bad idea i'll use 320kbs to keep all of the music's quality.saiyanprimalforce wrote:I actually downloaded and checked this out. Your right about me leaving the voice/sfx audio untouched I actually didn't touch the center channel's audio because I feel like i've cut enough audio detail by getting rid of the other 5 channels but i'll take your idea into account from now on.saiyanprimalforce wrote:Also, I'm pretty sure you need to lower the center channel audio's volume, cause I think you have it as ripped, and honestly, it's too loud at times.
Thanks for the tip i'll try that.saiyanprimalforce wrote:I"ve played around with splicing together center channel and a stero version of the 5.1 tracks, and I've settled around a -6 decrease for the center channel audio, but it's probably best if you played around with it a bit to find the right niche.
Sorry about that, destiny was a pain in the ass to get the audio levels right so it isn't 100% perfect but at the time it was the best I could do.saiyanprimalforce wrote:Besides that, I noticed that Destiny was getting drowned out there at the end when it came to the Namek's background noise. Thanks my original goal was to keep everything as faithful to the original as possible and I think it turned out pretty good considering it was my first time doing something like this.saiyanprimalforce wrote:I know trying to level the audio correct is a big pain in the ass, beleive me. Well every time I hear something like a track being extended it really irks me but your right I did exaggerate a little too much, consider me a perfectionist if you want but that's just the way I am but either way your placement is pretty good for what was done.saiyanprimalforce wrote:Having said that, I think you exaggerate a bit when you say a lot of my Yamamoto score is different from the original broadcast. there was going to be a 4th OST? this I did not know and a 100% restoration might theoretically be possible if someone can get the unripped music without Japanese voices which might be possible if a theory I came up with is right.saiyanprimalforce wrote:The point is to restore his score, but the fact that 100% restoration is impossible due to the 4th soundtrack getting canned,
Well we both have similar goals to restore the kai music placement to what it should be but if you can find a way to skin that cat then i'd love to see it.saiyanprimalforce wrote:and that the same guy who placed Yamamoto's music is the same guy who's responsible for a crap placement of Kikuchi in Kai(and other's have complained about his Yamamoto placement here in the forums), I can't say if I find a different way to skin a cat that achieves the same results, or offers something even better, then I won't do it.
Well you did a Yamamoto rescore before I started on mine so you deserve some merit for what you did.saiyanprimalforce wrote:But I consider myself still be pretty faithful to the original intentions. Well i'm not planning to do a Kikuchi or Faulconer mix (Yamamoto is my top priority with Kai).saiyanprimalforce wrote:much LESS Kikuchi and Faulconer. But fortunately(or unfortunately, I don't know, lol), that didn't happen in the timespan I would have liked.
True the more poeple that work on these things the more the fans can enjoy Kai.saiyanprimalforce wrote:But hey, the more, the merrier I say.Lol.
Yeah that was a bad move on my part (I used the 2 loudest channels from the 5.1 track to get Yeah Break Care Break which sounded really metalic so that's why it sounds really metallic).saiyanprimalforce wrote:Edit* Forgot to mention Yeah Break Care sounded really metallic for some reason.

Re: My attempt at Restoring Yamamoto Score to Kai
As far as leveling the volume between the center track and music, what editing program do you use? I'm just curious, since I use MPEG Video Wizard(pretty simple program compared to your Vegas or Adobe or Pinnacle, but it's super easy to use) to make my tracks. It's very flexible in terms of being able to edit the music pieces and adjust their volume to various parts. I'm thinking specifically with Destiny in 53, where I basically cut it up in 3-4 different places and adjusted the volume up and down when it switched back and forth from exploding Namek to King Kai's. But yeah, anything with exploding Namek is a pain to work with for the most part.
But hey, if it's the first time you've done this, that's okay, cause it takes some doing to get comfortable(or as close as comfortable) with it. I'm certainly no professional when it comes to audio/video engineering here, and I've never done anything like audio edits before I started work on my Kai project. It took me a while to get the gist of how to edit the music properly with my program(Which, I kinda admit, there is some influence in how 53 is different/extended is due to it being my first episode I worked on, but having recently redone it with my lossless CD tracks, I kept the placement the same because I really liked the way it is, but 53's just a weird exception to my norm. It is what it is, lol.
But as far as unreleased Yamamoto tracks, I believe Kei17 has ripped a couple of them, Ominous Silence without the harmonica, and the Unelectronic version of Creature of Marvel--but they weren't the best quality(there's still some noise very noticeable sfv-voice artifacts in there), so I've pretty much just dealt with the few situations that cropped up so far. Creature of Marvel works most the time in the places where the unelectronic version one plays with the exception of a couple places in Part 5(or maybe 3). One at the start of episode 57, where I used Rebirth of Shenlong, and in episode 64 when 17 and 18 are activated, the violn version of the song plays before the electronic when 17 crushes the controller, so I used A Power That Cannot Be Defined. . .though I might change that once I finally get back to 64.
PS: I wasn't trying to imply you were doing a Kikuchi or Faulconer track. I was just trying to say even one score restoration is a lot of work, nevermind doing two others. But in truth, I started out just doing Yamamoto, because I didn't really think the other two were doable, but I experimented with episode 51 first to see if I could make those actually work. And that was pretty much it after that, lol.

Re: My attempt at Restoring Yamamoto Score to Kai
Actually I use Audacidty for my audio editing (I use the amplify fuction to adjust the music's volume), Audacity to me works best for the job because it's what i'm most comfortable with using but your program sounds like a good alternative.saiyanprimalforce wrote:As far as leveling the volume between the center track and music, what editing program do you use? Well in terms of audio editing i've had some experience prior to starting this kinda project so audio editing isn't entirely new to me but when it came to working with voices/sfx at the same time as the music yeah it was my first time working with those.saiyanprimalforce wrote:But hey, if it's the first time you've done this, that's okay, cause it takes some doing to get comfortable(or as close as comfortable) with it. Well if the sfx are present it shouldn't bee too much of a problem voices on the other hand are a different matter.saiyanprimalforce wrote:But as far as unreleased Yamamoto tracks, I believe Kei17 has ripped a couple of them, Ominous Silence without the harmonica, and the Unelectronic version of Creature of Marvel--but they weren't the best quality(there's still some noise very noticeable sfv-voice artifacts in there),
Make due with what you can I guess i'll try and get better quality versions of those tracks when I reach those episodes.saiyanprimalforce wrote:so I've pretty much just dealt with the few situations that cropped up so far. I wasn't saying that you were implying anything about Kikuchi or Faulconer I just thought i'd mention the fact I wasn't making versions using those scores now so poeple wouldn't ask about it in the future.saiyanprimalforce wrote:PS: I wasn't trying to imply you were doing a Kikuchi or Faulconer track. Re: My attempt at Restoring Yamamoto Score to Kai
Just a quick update i've been working on episdoe 54 but a few songs are giving me hell so it may take a wile before I can get this one done on a more positive note here's an updated ep 53 patch this update fixes the following:
"Hopefuly" the low volume toward the end of Desteny has been fixed.
Yeah Break Care Break's metalic sound and NEP music have been fixed.
The center channel audio is leveled out now.
File is now encoded at 320kbs.

Re: My attempt at Restoring Yamamoto Score to Kai
Couldn't you do a more faithful Yamamoto Kai music placement yourself, because the original isn't that good neither as people praise so much.
Thanks, though!

I could do my own placement if I really wanted to but I don't really feel right doing that because I actually liked the original placement quite a bit and feel that people should be able to hear the english dub with the music placement as it was originally heard in the Japanese Broadcast.dbboxkaifan wrote:Couldn't you do a more faithful Yamamoto Kai music placement yourself, because the original isn't that good neither as people praise so much.
