This French track is the same one I remember from TV when I was watching it as a kid, so I think they simply put the sound from TV version on the R2 DVD footage.

I am sure that's just the optical audio which is the same as that on the DBoxes. It might somewhat sounds a little bit better than DB probably because of the PAL playback speed that made it slightly higher-pitched (*or simply being equalized). Still, that must be nothing compared to the original broadcast audio. Speaking of the French dub, it's just that it was poorly mixed or has been stored in awful conditions. Though it sounds bad, it's almost certain that the French dub audio is from magnetic tapes, since it doesn't sound rasping unlike the Japanese audio, and it has some high-frequency noise that cannot exist on optical soundtrack.

Or that their audio tapes for the French audio are very old. France was the very first country to get a dub of "Saint Seiya," and their dub began airing in the late 80's. So their masters are likely...well, very, very, very old. Interestingly, France was also the very first country to get a dub of "Dragon Ball," "Dragon Ball Z," and "Sailor Moon." I don't know why, but it seems like Toei had a great relationship with France back in the day, seeing as they kept getting first dibs on all of Toei's major shows. How North America didn't get "Saint Seiya" until the early 2000's is something that is totally beyond me.

I never knew that about France getting Dragonball First.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

It's stated in Daizenshuu 7, if I remember correctly. Lots of dubs from other countries suffered from their awful translation

Well, France have some long history of anime and also Tokusatsu series since the 70's-80's and thanks to it, it is the only country in Europe, where anime have long tradition and big popularity. Longer than Brazil I think.
First anime I saw were in French: Slayers, Dr. Slump, Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya.
One of the reasons of why Daft Punk wanted Leiji Matsumoto to do their video Interstella 5555, as they were a big fans of his work as kids.

Indeed and I think the movie as a whole is still great to watch especially since it was animated using Discovery as a basis.

Sorry for being sort of nitpicky, but Thai got a dub of the original Dragon Ball in the same year as France did, so it is not clear that France is the first. In addition, a Greek friend told me that ANT1 in Greece had started broadcasting Sailor Moon in 1992 (within a year TV Asahi started airing it, surprisingly), so Greece must be the first country to import Sailor Moon.

Hmm. Well, if the French wikipedia article is anything to go by, you're right. The French dub started airing on December 23rd, 1993. So I guess I was wrong.
