Mugen: Balthazar's Work (fangaming)

Post by Iced » Thu Jan 26, 2012 1:56 pm

Hello Everyone.

I am Iced from the Mugen Guild . Mugen is a game engine that allows you to put together characters and pretty much customize your own fighting game.

A friend of mine suggested I should present to you guys the works of one of our users, Balthazar.
You heard about him while he was still making a Goku.
Goku has been released and was a success, you see, while most old mugen makers used to focus on small sprites and a lot of ( TERRIBLE) gameplay, balthazar creations are more sensible and have a lot of code quality, courtesy of his coder, Cybaster
So I joined to bring you some updates:

Image

Right now , Balthazar is hard at work on Vegeta:

Image
which you can follow on this thread here

You can also find Gohan, who is being built on top of his Goku here
if you are interested you can even check a video here

Making characters like this takes a lot of work, animation alone takes tons of time to get done, you can check out more of his work here, or at his deviantart page. If you are so inclined you can even comission or donate to the artist.

Here is a curiosity ( not a full character planned, or at least, not in the foreseeable future )
Image

Another person you might find interesting, is Chamat, who has been helping Baltha and is now trying to perform a wip of his own
Image
Freeza

And last but not least, you have wizzywhipwonderful doing awesome music work using dragonball ( and several other games and shows) as inspiration.

So, join in and check up on their work, give your own suggestions and help out if you think you have what it takes to help out those projects.

I got to know about his Goku by a video posted here. Then I also found balthazar on deviantart and I'm now following him.

I really like the work he's doing. Together with the code of cybaster it probably makes for some very cool characters.

If this gets to a packaged release sometime I'd sure download it. But right now I'm not about to get into mugen again. That would be a blast from the past (like 10 years ago).

Gawddaaaaaam, those are beautiful.

Is that Vegetto in the upper-right or a Goku recolor?

The theme of Omega Shenron. Both Sprites made by Balthazar.
I see there is little interest in the projects so far, that is a shame.

It's not like that. People here just aren't that vocal about things they don't know.
I introduced 2 good dbz fan games in the video games department and although there are plenty views, not a lot of people have responded.

So just keep updating with these. They're great.

Btw I love the kaioken move Goku does, the one like against Nappa. The spirit bomb is coded great too.

Vegeta and Gohan will have similar systems, it will allow for some nice cinematic moves without the common thing to many fangames where the characters end up too overpowered.

Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. This is for MUGEN, right? Are there any sample videos?

The assistant needs some more practice :P
Here's my 2 cents..

The animations look kinda static, his head doesn't seem to change position much, most of the melee moves lack that oomph, that feeling of impact. I think the blow needs to happen faster.
That trembling is overused. Sometimes it doesn't even make sense. It's not because he's frieza that he should be cold all the time. :P

It may be the style, but Frieza's legs seem very fat. Especially in that Krillin crush animation. His forearms seem to suffer it too.
Other than that I would make the line details softer so a lighter color could be used.

That being said I really like the Death ball animation. That smirk is classic. :)

That "trembling" is the fall anim, the sprites are positioned like that so you can tell where they flow from and to. =P
In game you would only see him doing that when jumping and then whenever animated he would do the move.

fighting games have animations positioned so that when there is no anim you have a idle pose. When you make an input you get an attack so, "idle => attack => idle" . the part where you see him trembling his tail there is just the anim for when he is idle falling .

The legs and arms being too fat were already brought to his attention so he is refixing the sprites

I should also point out that I am not posting all of the sprite edits and random animations on the threads I'm linking to, so you will see far more by checking the links:

It's mainly the thick ankles and feet that make him look like a chubby bear.
And also the proportion issues seem to stem from the lack of any waist/abdomen/ribcage. It's like his hips are pasted directly onto his chest.

Anyway I've edited the sprite, because I really felt like pixeling again! Even if only for just a little.

This a expansion of an edit Balthazar already did in that forum. You can post it there if you want. I'm not about to join yet. :p

So, say I wanted to play this piece of awesomeness...is this something that already exists and is available for download, or is it still being developed?

Also,

Thanks! I played with the colors of the shading and at one point it had blue shading which made it look even more like Hyper Dimension. I contemplated posting it as an alternate but didn't because of laziness :p

I'm not sure but I think you can download that Goku and add it to any existing mugen base you'd have laying around.

You totally should, man. That Freeza looks gorgeous.

I'm not too familiar with mugen stuff, I only played around with it a little bit in highschool because I needed something to play in tech class. I kinda figured this would (at least eventually) be a Dragon Ball specific fighter that one could just download and play.

PS: That Yi Xing Long and Boo make me pee my pants figuratively

This... looks awesome! Any guess when it will be out?
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Hi guys, Balthazar isnt doing a specific full game, he is releasing the characters as is so you can fight them with anyone in your mugen engine.
Goku is already out!
All you need is a mugen program ( avaliable free from elecbyte.com) , Goku file, avaliable from http://network.mugenguild.com/cybaster/ , and any opponent you want for Goku.
To make the char work in the game just add the name of goku files to the select.def using notepad. ( you can find tons of youtube tutorials of how thats done, or check any of the readmes)
