Budokai 3 is still the highest rated DBZ game on Metacritic. If Dimps starts making Dragon Ball games again then I could see them selling well. Another reason I think the recent Spike games also sold poorly is because most people are getting tired of them. With Ulimate Blast, they try to do something different but the game end up getting mixed reviews.

It's not dying in the US. The Kai DVDs seem to be selling well although they rushed with releasing the BD too soon and they flopped.

In Japan on the other hand I think it's dead. Kai didn't do as well in Japan as it's doing in the US. I read that DVD sales were really low and people were only watching the show, not buying it. Toei has new cash cows nowadays so they don't care about DB anymore.

That wasn't the main problem. It's that they weren't buying all the other associated products. The show is a big advertisement, if the merchandise isn't selling then there's no need for the show. The TV series in Japan, unlike the US, has never been the main product.

I don't think it's dying just yet, since the series ended ages ago, it's suprising that merchandise is still even in production! It's been dubbed in so many languages too so it's like a worldwide series, Japan, being the mother country would probably be the first place where it dies out, and Kai has only recently been aired in Japan so who knows when DB will officially be classified as dead?

It did cost a lot of time and money to work on Kai, if no profit is made then it will result in a lot less merchandise/products being produced, which could lead to it dying, and it ended at the end of the Cell arc, whether this is because of the fans being not interested or Toei want to wait to finish the rest I don't know. Time can only tell.

It will never die in me though, it's a part of my history and life so even if it dies out in the public, I'll still be pleased to have been a part of it.

If it was dead, then the recent video games, Dragon Ball SD, Dragon Ball Heroes updates, Episode of Bardock and others wouldn't exist.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

When it comes to DVD/BD releases DB it is dying.

You have three incomplete productions on their record. The UUE, BDs, and the movie singles that were cancelled after the release of the double features.

As of now no plans for other Dragon Boxes to be released.

It's had too great an impact to just die like that. It's always going to be around. It's not going to be big, but it's always going to be respected, referred to here and there and talked about even if there are no merchandise releases for the next few years.

However, it will always keep coming and going like it's been doing for the last few years.

Someone should make an all new manga with these characters with a completely different story. That's really what it needs.

I don't see why it's such a shocker. The games are repetitive, there's nothing added really to the story, and it's being milked over and over again.

If you ask me, the only reason it's still around in any capacity is because FUNimation keeps it around. I mean, to correct myself, Toei did make Kai and the games are being released, but does anyone really care about those things? If FUNimation didn't keep re-releasing the series, it honestly wouldn't be around in any capacity. Once "Z Kai" was done, it would be over in the US market, just like it's pretty much over in the Japanese one. The only thing keeping it alive other than the constant re-releases is...us. The fans. And that seems fair. It's a really old show that doesn't play anywhere in the US (now "Z Kai" re-sparked some sort of interest, but let's face it, in a year or so, it won't be on TV anymore).

I've come to terms with that a long time ago. That no matter how much I loved the series, it honestly has no impact in today's world and it's already "dead" in many ways. Like...all of the old Marvel and DC shows from the 90's. I loved them all, but I'd have to be ignorant to believe for a second that they aren't dead by now.
