Other animes that are similar to DragonBall?
I hope this is the right section to ask this.
I'm looking for the names of other animes, old or new, that are similar to DragonBall in the way it uses the martial arts, kung fu, and various fighting techniques. I'm not into anime all that much, but Iam curious. And I'd like to go onto watching more anime that are somewhat similar...after I finish my DBZ marathon.
Thanks!

I know people here are most likely to string me up in an angry mob for saying this, but Naruto really is similar in a sense. Especially in the big battles that require use of good fighting strategy, teamwork, and several chakra (ki) blasts (the latter becomes more and more prominent later on in the story, especially in the manga). Heck, there's recently been a beast introduced that's named Son Goku!
If you want more anime series that are similar to Dragon Ball Z somehow, you can go to this page and see what other users recommend if you liked DBZ. Hope I helped!

Re: Other animes that are similar to DragonBall?
I used to be the same. I never liked other Anime. They simply seemed way too "kiddy". Then I watched Berserk and Death Note. They are nothing like Dragon Ball, but they have really good plots. Berserk was discontinued however (and now in the making), so try Death Note. Even though it's not about fighting you might enjoy it.Saiyajin no Tatsujin wrote:I hope this is the right section to ask this.

You do know Death Note is for kids too, right?Pieter wrote:I used to be the same. I never liked other Anime. They simply seemed way too "kiddy". Then I watched Berserk and Death Note.
So why bring them up in this topic?Pieter wrote:They are nothing like Dragon Ball, but they have really good plots.
There's a comic too you know.Pieter wrote:Berserk was discontinued however (and now in the making), so try Death Note.
As for the topic, just look through some other WSJ titles (or really just about any shonen battle series that came after DB). You'll find something that's similar to DB.

Re: Other animes that are similar to DragonBall?
Just off the top of my head...and keep in mind, the similarity varies between just similar elements, or shows actually feeling similar -
Yu Yu Hakusho
One Piece
Naruto/Shippuden
Bleach
Hmm...maybe Gurren Laggan a tiny bit? In some of the over-the-top battles anyway.
But yeah, as said, just about any SJ series in the action department will have been influenced by DB in some way, so poke around titles in that line and see what catches your interest.
Oh! And of course, Dr. Slump.

Re: Other animes that are similar to DragonBall?
Try Yu Yu Hakusho , it is by far more favorite anime of all time! It has lots of great martial arts action with powers but where as DBZ is very lighthearted Yu Yu Hakusho is much more serious, also the fight scenes in the Anime wipes the floor of any fight in DBZ, since the fights are not all to drawn out or to over powered so as to make the fights degenerate into people flying in the sky blowing up mountains. Also the setting of Yu Yu Hakusho is much darker as the villains consist of Demons and SERIOUSLY deranged madmen but the Villains are not bad for the sake of being evil they actually have there own reasons which they try to justify.
The hero of the story is not some retarded man child but a bad ass high school delinquent.

So, nothing like DB. Exactly what the OP wanted.SSJ YUSUKE wrote:Also the setting of Yu Yu Hakusho is much darker as the villains consist of Demons and SERIOUSLY deranged madmen but the Villains are not bad for the sake of being evil they actually have there own reasons which they try to justify.

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I've seen Berserk a while back. Loved it...but it's super different to DragonBall.
I was told to watch the Baki The Grappler series. It's supposed to be all about martial arts. I'm gonna look into that one.

Re: Other animes that are similar to DragonBall?
Aside from Death Note being for children as well, I don't see how this relates to what the topic poster was looking for (not to mention Death Note has more melodrama than Trunks during the Cell Games topped off with ridiculous plot devices that make Bleach look good). He wants animes that're like Dragon Ball and you give him ones that aren'? I don't see how they're any less "kiddy", aside from Berserk which has an entirely different target audience.Pieter wrote:I used to be the same. I never liked other Anime. No one's mentioned Hunter x Hunter yet. I can't say it's just like Dragon Ball, but it's shonen, it has good fights, it has special abilities, and the main character has black, spiky hair. You've gotta have the black, spiky hair.

Re: Other animes that are similar to DragonBall?
You beat me to it! Yes i was goning to say try Hunter x Hunter! it is very good. Naruto has enough attention, it's already at the top. HxH needs more fans! I, am tired of seeing Bleach and Naruto stuff every where.
Re: Other animes that are similar to DragonBall?
Sorry to intrude, but Naruto is still well below a lot of series, including Dragon Ball. One Piece is the best selling manga out there, so I'd definitely say it's above Naruto's fan base.Haji wrote:You beat me to it! Yes i was goning to say try Hunter x Hunter! it is very good. Re: Other animes that are similar to DragonBall?
So you think that HxH is more popular than HxH right now?
Re: Other animes that are similar to DragonBall?
More popular than Naruto? No, but I was namely referring to the whole "it's at the top" deal. :pHaji wrote:So you think that HxH is more popular than HxH right now?

Re: Other animes that are similar to DragonBall?
Well what i mean is that i would like to see HxH be very popular. And i'm not a narrow minded fan boy or hater, Naruto is ok, Rock Lee and Might Guy are my favorite characters. Same with Bleach it's just that HxH deserves more attention.
Re: Other animes that are similar to DragonBall?
Well I agree, seeing that HxH is just a better franchise over all in my opinion than most of the shonen sellers.

How about Magical Teacher Negima! by the same author who drew Love Hina? It's great and has great fights and some fights that's similar to DBZ. There's Negima Chapter 247 about Negi Springfield, who dreams of becoming a Magister Magi (Master of Magic or Master Mage) who has had transformed into his Lighting Level 2 form that's almost similar to SSJ3 form in order to defeat Jack Rakan in the tournament.
Re: Other animes that are similar to DragonBall?
So, a harem series with some fighting for a guy who likes DB? That doesn't sound like the greatest of recommendations.Z-Dragon wrote:How about Magical Teacher Negima! by the same author who drew Love Hina? Re: Other animes that are similar to DragonBall?
While not exactly the same, you could draw some parallels to DBZ with Mashuranbo, known in the U.S. as "Shinzo".
An original but short-lived series created by Toei, it is yet another tale verrry/i] loosely based on "The Journey to the West". Mashura is the monkey kid complete with headband, staff that comes out of nowhere, and a floating disc in lieu of a cloud. Yakumo is the stand in for the priest (with a dragon-mech in place of the shape-shifting dragon-mount), Sago takes the place of the water imp, and big cat Kutal replaces the pig-guy. Throw in lots of action, coming back form the dead at least once throughout the series, a BBEG from the stars and a finale that threatens the entire world, and I guess you can't help but compare it to DB, even just a little.
Then there's my beloved "Bobobo-bo-bobobo", which is an action-comedy that includes lots of jokes about several different manga and anime, including Dragonball. I miss Bobobo.

I think he asked for anime, and while I haven't seen its second season, I heard the Negima anime doesn't get to the point where in the manga it switches from harem comedy to action series.Z-Dragon wrote:How about Magical Teacher Negima! by the same author who drew Love Hina?
