Do the DBZ movies look better on DVD than regular eps?

Post by urhash » Mon Feb 23, 2004 9:34 pm

I haven't bought any of the Funi DVD movies yet, only about 10 or so of the episodes. Do the movies look better on DVD given that they were originally meant to be shown theatrically on 35mm film?

They look great on DVD. Don't worry about it. The movies were made with a higher animation budget than the T.V. series, so the quality is already superior from the start.

Too bad they use the same music. :x

The first DBZ thing I ever saw was Movie #12, and I was so impressed by the animation and music. Then after I started watching the episodes I realize what they had recycled... he he.

Thanks though. I can't wait for movies 12 and 13 on DVD! Come on funi!

I'm waiting for Movie 9, that's up next and they're taking ages on that! I really want Movie 9 though, it's one of the best ones! Plus my little Gohan's the hero! :D

I've seen that one, but only the chinese dub. Its funny... as Goku teleports to save Gohan and he's carrying him down gently, he says "Gohan! Come on, you're so useless. You have to use your true power!" That's what he says in chinese, anyways. Might be vastly different in japanese.

Oh no! He doesn't say he's useless! Geez! That's it! Have Goku just verbally abuse his son while he's half dead and missing his dad! :?

depends which quality you're refering to. Animation wise, they're as everyone else has said. Video wise, they're a good step up. The Pioneer Movies 1-3 though look really neat.

Eh, not all the movies have that good animation. Some parts of the series, like certain parts of the Cell Games, have the best animation which the movies can't really compare to, except the last two because of the computer technology involved.

Actually, all of Pioneer's early discs (including the three DBZ movies) are some of the lowest-bitrate piles of trash you'll ever see. The movies somewhat hide this, since the actual animation quality is extremely gorgeous... but man... they're pretty trashy.

Unfortunately, I'm not the kind of video expert VegettoEX is, so I'm easily fooled by pretty, vivid colours.

I'm pretty keen on DVD picture quality... and I would say the episodes are pretty well done. The biggest thing is they just seem to have maxed out the saturation to make it look like a brand new cartoon... that and they probably cleaned out a lot of artifacts (grain, etc).

I haven't really looked for edge enhancement (oversharpening)... maybe VegettoEX might know if that's the case.

Geuss I was going on Region 4 releases, where you could see really see the difference between the 123/456 releases. 7 was fucking horrible though (still on about r4 mind you)

I assume they've done that with the episodes as airing on TV, not just those on the DVDs.

And on this, I only realised what a good job they've done on the Dragon Ball DVDs after watching the Blue Water dub on TV. The picture quality is AWFUL. Scartches, pops, burns, shaky picture...the DVDs are amazing next to that.

Yes, I've noticed that too when DB's on T.V., I couldn't get over the difference the first time I happened to see it on YTV. It really looks it's age. :?

It doesn't sound much better either. I know that FUNi are guilty of going for "character" voices, but is the only requirement for working at Blue Water that you must have the blandest voice in the world?
