I would suggest:
Fist Of The North Star - (The whole series has recently been released on DVD. Ken is kinda like a more serious version of Goku without the fireballs, in a post apocalyptic world).
Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple - (Kid trains with seven masters to become a martial artist. He learns new moves that help him at just the right time to face his current opponent. Also has the same rival becoming friends theme, found in DBZ).
Ranma 1/2 - (More of a comedic martial arts show. Has tons of crazy and outrageous fighting techniques. Also main character turns back and forth between a boy and girl, when exposed to cold or hot water).
Street fighter II:V - (This incarnation unlike the American version, deals with Ken and Ryu's abilities being tied into their chi control. Also the usual martial arts, going around the world, and fighting Vega (M Bison's Japanese name) theme associated with the franchise.
Shura No Toki - (Martial arts series, that spans three generations of a master fighter of weaponless combat. His technique is supposed to be the best of any fighting technique there is. The main character's laid back attitude will remind you a lot of Goku's).

1 Corinthians 13: When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. Except the anime. Never the anime.

Thank you for the suggestions.
I'll be looking into some of those.
