Re: Dragon Box FUNimation Survey

I collected most of the singles DVD's, followed by the Ultimate Uncut editions, wishing we could have the Dragon Box from Japan, but figuring this was the best we'd ever get.

When the UUE's were abruptly canceled and new, remastered box sets were announced, complete with a booklet, I figured these would be our Dragon Boxes. I couldn't have been more wrong. What was once a day-one purchase became a "wait-n-see" after FUNi revealed that these were not Dragon Boxes, that they had the remastering done themselves, and the community discovered that their claims of "more footage" in the widescreen prints was an outright lie. When it was finally released, I saw for myself how awful the new picture was through online reviews, and swore I'd never purchase an Orange Brick. If I couldn't have the Dragon Box, I wanted nothing to do with these new releases. I had my singles, and was tried of spending more money for the same incomplete experience. I didn't care about holes in my collection.

Then the unthinkable happened. Seemingly out of nowhere, FUNimation announced they had the rights to the Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box. I scooped up every release immediately, and now own all 291 episodes in pristine, complete condition. And in snazzy boxes with Steve Simmons-translated Dragon Books, to boot.

After such a wonderful release, what I wanted more than anything else was a Dragon Box release for Dragon Ball. When FUNi announced their Blue Bricks, I thought that was what we were getting. But initial previews provided enough doubt that I again played wait-n-see. Sure enough, it wasn't the Dragon Box, and it still had the wrong openings and closings, so I passed on them. Deep down inside, I knew that if we were lucky enough to get a DBZ Dragon Box, and it had performed well-enough, I knew a DB Dragon Box would eventually come.

Now, with FUNi surveying possible interest in such, I know my wait was well worth it.

I was also debating if I should buy the Blue Season Sets, but now that Funimation has kinda hinted that they may do the original Dragonball Dragon-boxes if they like the results of the survey. there isn't a snowball's chance in hell that I would buy those Blue sets.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

......and limited, like 500 copies for each volume, FTW!!! Some greedy masturbators will then sell it back for 1000 dollars each.....

That's what I'm afraid of after the Z boxes

I voted for Dragon Ball, despite just having bought the blue bricks. The only Dragon Ball I've ever seen was back when it was on TV in the 90's! I haven't seen it since Funimation went back and re-dubbed it. Almost wondering if I should start watching these blue bricks or have more patience and see if the DB Dragon Boxes come out...

I voted for a Dragon Ball Dragon Box. I voted twice since I used 2 different laptops. I also placed DBGT as second best after Dragon Ball, in hope of it also getting released sometime down the road. :D

I wonder, is it worth waiting for the potential price drop or should we get these ASAP? I'm not really sure tbh, because I'm certain that there will be a lot of people buying numerous Dragon Boxes to re-sell but than Funimation will probably release them initially for a higher price.

I wouldn't take any risk in waiting. I know as soon as they come out I will be getting them ASAP. I think since now we know for sure that these are indeed limited, more people will jump for these.

I say get them ASAP. Considering how Dragon Box Z 2 went from dropping to 25 bucks to going up to 200+ in used market value, it's not a risk worth taking.

I was incredibly lucky in getting them all at 45 each, having only started to get them last october. Not taking any chances this time, though

True I don't think anyone was expecting DBOX 2 to go so high in value but what can be done about that? Whether or not I can get enough money for them (i'm saving up my money for something that really caught my interest) will really depend on when Funi decides to release these sets (if they decide to go through with it).
If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out. ;).

If it's any consolation, I would assume that if FUNi's gonna be getting more DBoxes, perhaps they'll start by replenishing the Z DBox supply in some manner.

I think they may do that in what they put in the disclaimer as "Limited Edition Saga Sets."

I wonder when Funimation will come out and say ''yay or nay'' on this little project? Also I've voted 3 times on different computers for Dragonball :P

Hopefully, all those people giving up their first born for Volume 2 is money FUNi is missing out on!

If it's a yes our first confirmation will probably come in the form of either a leak of some sort (cover art, etc.) or an actual teaser trailer. So if the answer is yes then we probably won't hear it until the project is nearly ready for release. Either way, I doubt we'd get a response soon. But if it's any consolation, things are looking good as far as survey participation.

It's possible FUNi is trying to squeeze out everything they can while DVD is still viable. If they don't release the Dragon Box now then they may lose their chance. The DVD era is approaching its twilight. In spite of the Blu-ray cancelation (certainly for reasons unrelated to format), I doubt FUNi has much interest in pushing DVDs for much longer.

If all goes well, I wonder how long it would be until we see this released. It would have to be close to a year, wouldn't it?

If we were to go by how FUNimation announced Dragon Box Z, they'd show Dragon Box (Dragon Ball) at an anime convention.

I remember seeing the video about it, they had a custom looking Goku, Chichi and samples of how the actual Dragon Box Z would be like. :D

For some reason I wasn't too much into the Dragon Boxes Z of FUNimation, but after they were released, I bought all of them. Hell, I even considered to stop purchasing, heh, that would've sucked because now they're all OoP. :P

If I had access to other computers, I'd take this survey again...but now that I think about it, my local library has like 20 computers! Sweet! I'm gonna bike over there today and fill out this survey as many times as I can!

I see a year passing before any kind of announcement is released, and then possibly another 6-12 months until the actual Boxes are released, and they'll probably be released months apart like the Z Boxes were. It'll surely be worth the wait, but damn will it be a while until any of us might have these... :|

Voted for the movies. I would like to have all the Z era in Dragon Box quality.

I also voted for Dragon Ball. It would be interesting if the remaining Dragon Boxes actually made it over if they were released in the same order they were in Japan. I still doubt there would be any more than three sets for Dragon Ball, as 153 is perfectly divisible by 3.
nathantheguitarist wrote:and the Mexican dub (even if you don't really care, it's the thought of other fans that counts).
If people make such a big stink over people wanting the broadcast dub to be included on a Dragon Box, why should a Mexican dub be any different? I'd imagine it's far more likely it would just be the Japanese and English version, just like the DBZ sets.

Guess I'll be forking over more cash in the near future starting with the DBZ dragon box releases. I knew I should have gotten them when they were fresh on the shelves.
