FUNi DBZ Dub Music & Ocean Dub Music Question

Post by dbboxkaifan » Tue Feb 14, 2012 4:05 pm

Why was there so little use of silence moments, i.e, dialogue only?

I like Ocean Dub's music a lot (Shuki Levy's awesome), and personally don't have a problem with the tiny silence moments but I really wish they would have made use it.

With FUNi's DBZ Dub w/Faulconer Team Music, official version, I don't like it because to me the BGMs don't quite fit, the audio-mix and barely any silence moments.

"dbzkaimusicrevival" (I think this is the guy's name) has done some Kai episodes with Shunsuke Kikuchi, Kenji Yamamoto and Team Faulconer's music, really liked all of it, but the music was higher than the actual voices, which didn't please me to watch very much. Also, he had sample episodes of Kai with Shuki Levy's DBZ Music (Ocean Dub).

Here's a video of Ocean Dub's Silence Moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PRXnbgealA it's not too long, but better than nothing. :)

It's a culture thing. Watch modern American cartoons, and you'll notice they lack silence too (Fairly Oddparents etc.) I think most people think that kids' attention spans are non-existent, which isn't true.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
From what Bruce says, Funimation wanted it that way.

Here's a clip from an interview:
Q: Why aren't scenes without music used? What reasoning has been given, and what's the longest length of silence they would allow?
A: This is basically just directorial requests. They wanted music to help tell the story, so it's used very much all the way through. There are some places where the music's not overly active, or it's soft in the background. Sometimes maybe too soft, but that's like playing all the multiple possibilities of what it could be. The lack of long pauses of silence is a directorial style that was being sought, in that they wanted the show to be more musically based.
